Existentialism In No Exit
Existentialism concentrates on human existence and an individual discovering their meaning and
purpose in life. It involves free will and the ability to make choices, while taking responsibility for the
outcomes of those decisions. Existentialism is composed of five different elements, which are
authenticity, angst, anxiety, freedom, and absurdity. In Jean Paul Sartre s play titled No Exit , the
multiple elements of existentialism are portrayed through the characters; Garcin, Estelle, and Inez.
One of the elements of existentialism that is present in No Exit is absurdity. Garcin finds himself in
complete disbelief when he realizes that hell is absolutely nothing like the depiction that is given on
earth. In the play, he states So this is hell. I d never have believed it. You remember all we were told
about were the torture chambers, the fire and brimstone... Instead of the common belief that hell is
nothing but a fire pit of agony, Garcin finds it to be just as normal as life on earth. ... Show more

She takes full responsibility for the crimes and choices she made in her living life, and accepts and
understands why she has been condemned to hell. She states What s the point of play acting, trying to
throw dust in each other s eyes?,...we are criminals murderers all three of us...and people aren t
damned for nothing. Inez understands that each of them were free to do as they please, and as a result
of their decisions they must face the consequence. She also states I prefer to choose my hell; I prefer
to look you in the eyes and fight it out face to face. The three Garcin, Estelle, and Inez find one
another very annoying and impossible to get along with. Unlike Garcin and Estelle, who complain
every second they can, Inez deals with it head on. She doesn t deny the crimes she has committed, nor
does she question why she has been placed in hell. Inez embodies the idea of freedom, as it pertains to

Mental Health And Poverty
Poverty and Health
Introduction
On any given day, approximately 3 billion people in the world live on less than $2.50 a day, while
approximately 1.5 billion people live off less than $1.25 (Do something). Living off such conditions
can negatively affect individuals not only physically, but also cognitively, socially, and emotionally.
Poverty can also leads to many adverse outcomes such as poor nutrition, low weight, chronic illness,
and even death. While studying poverty in America, researchers have outlined the relationship
between poverty and health, discovering negative consequences pertaining to mental health, prenatal
health, and access to medical treatment.
Mental Health
Mental health is often regarded as the well being of an individual socially, emotionally, and
psychologically that is dynamically influenced by physical, social, and environmental factors (WHO).
When studying the prevalence of mental illness, recent research has indicated varying patterns among
various social classes. Because of this, researchers were able to connect poverty and mental health,
indicating that individuals living in low socioeconomic or homeless conditions pose a greater risk for
developing a mental illness.
While studying the relationship between mental illness and poverty, researchers have found substantial
evidence supporting the predisposition among children in low income households. Researchers found
that children of low income families demonstrate high levels of conduct

that most of the plants especially soy beans are genetically modified and can cause a lot of health
issues if the tofu is unfermented. I would like to find some great Tofu and try it. If I enjoy the taste. I
may even, consider going on to a full plant based diet. I would have to outweigh the cost as well of
course. 5.1) I am currently working on my associates of nursing for I can help people. I have tried to
find what the purpose of my life is and decided that until I truly find it that I can help people. I love
helping people and feeling needed. Feeling needed it what gets me out of bed most of the time. The
only thing that I can see besides being in the medical field to feel a purpose to breath is to just explore
and see what the world has to offer. My long term goal is to have both of the worlds. I plan to hold a

Handsome Jack From The Borderlands Franchise
There are many kinds of villains in stories with many different motivations. Handsome Jack from the
Borderlands franchise is one example of a villain done right. Not only does he contrast well against
the heros in the story, but he appeals well to the audience. The audience also sees how changes from
being considered a hero by many to being undoubtedly a villain.
When we initially meet Handsome Jack he is the CEO of the Hyperion corporation and claims to be
trying to civilize the crazy bandit filled lawless planet called Pandora. In the first installment of the
Borderlands franchise Handsome Jack did not directly make an appearance but was responsible for the
events that took place. Four adventurers or, Vault Hunters ; Roland, Brick, Mordecai, and Lilith, were
searching for an ancient alien vault which they believed contained vast treasures. Jack made his
daughter, Angel, pose as an AI to help them on their way and make sure that they opened The Vault so
that Jack may weaponize what it released when it was opened. Jack was successful and the vault was
opened. The second installment of the borderlands franchise begins with Handsome Jack trying, but
intentionally failing, to murder to the main characters to again manipulate them with the help of Angel
to take down the Pandoran resistance, formed by the Vault Hunters that he tricked, that is standing in
his way and to open the Vault of The Warrior, which would allow him to control an intelligent super

Analysis Of Robert Nozick s Experience Machine
Thank you so much for having me on your show Ellen! Yes, it is true that I started selling my art for
millions at the age of sixteen. Yes . . . oh my gosh, all these chocolates are for me?! I was seriously
just craving chocolate! No, solving child hunger really wasn t very hard. After all it was for the
children, I just put my mind to it and the rest was easy! That is correct, for the year 2016 I will be
running for president. I actually just surpassed all the other candidates running in the poll this
morning! Can you believe it? I m ecstatic! Oh thank you, you are too sweet Ellen. It was such a
pleasure being here on your show with . My eyes open up and I am back in a world of reality, stepping
out of Robert Nozick s experience machine. While in this device, wires are connected to an individual

machine allows one to fulfill his/her appetite of all desires no matter how insane or simple, existing
only in his/her mind. Of course this machine doesn t actually exist, but it represents a perfect example
of what life would be like if we could experience all of the pleasures we could possibly desire.
Contrary to what a tyrant would believe, although pleasure is significant in leading a good life,
pleasure is not the most essential good. First of all, it is impossible to discern pleasure without
hardship, leading you to be doomed into the life of a tyrant. Another reason not

Volcano s A Volcano Eruption By Cliff Montgomery
Volcano How to Survive Them.
When it comes to surviving, people will take whatever means are necessary to live just a little bit
longer. An example of this could be a point in the movie Titanic. In order to survive the boat sinking,
Rose rested on a piece of furniture that was drifting in the water. As a result, she was one of the few
people to actually be alive and rescued when the boats came back. When it comes to survival, at that
moment in time there is no rule book on what measure one can take to survive but a person should
know the basics. Volcanoes are a good example of this. Volcano s: How to Survive a Volcano Eruption
by Cliff Montgomery s article is effective because it acknowledges what is in a volcano, explain what
to do when a volcano is erupting and provides knowledge about what to watch out for.
In the article: Volcano s How to Survive a Volcano Eruption by Cliff Montgomery , he gives people a
knowledge of Volcano s in depth. Montgomery first starts out giving background information about
places where volcano eruptions have occurred what the effects of those eruptions have done to the city
and the people. Next, he goes into the workshop about how volcano s work and what is exactly inside
of them that does so much harm. Lastly, he mentions is how to protect one s self when the volcano
erupts before and after the eruption.
No one really knows how volcanoes came to be but we know what is inside one. An example of this
would be in the article Volcanoes

Business Impact Analysis of Russell Landing Marina Essay
Business impact analysis is the process of systematically addressing all of the risks associated with a
solution and identifying if it actually worked. Many formulas exist, designed to show what factors are
included when compiling an analysis. The simple formula of multiplying threats by your asset and
dividing that total by mitigating factors represents an impact analysis. Threats are those instances that
cause an operational or financial strain on your organization. These occurrences are the cause of
limited operations during business hours or no operations at all and computed in time. Assets are
defined as many elements, but are primarily composed of physical assets (equipment, material,
supplies, furnishings, etc.) that are owned by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Damoense, M. Y., Agbola). The threat in this situation is the person hours potentially lost based on
having too many employees and not enough work. The inverse is also important as you could have a
small number of employees with a lot of business and then customer satisfaction suffers, driving
profits down. All the equipment owned as well as the facility are considered assets in this situation.
Potential revenue is also included in this figure. Without changing anything, there would be no
mitigating factors so an analysis would concur that nothing obviously changed.
Active Impact on Future Operations As noted previously, the threats and assets do not change. There is
the same latent problem of losing person hours based on not appropriating for business that day. This
causes lost revenue either paid to the employee or not paid by the potential customer. The difference
between the idle impact and active impact is that the mitigating factor changes the analysis figures.
The solution would be to be able to track usage of the facility and correlate that to semi public
deployment schedules. Knowing how much of the base is gone at any given point in time can help
with the expected number of customers per day. This is linked to a percentage in terms of customers
and total available customers (active duty military and their family living on base). This mitigating
factor will dramatically reduce the costs associated

Revolt Of 1381 Summary
This account of the Peasants Revolt of 1381 by Jean Froissart, a medieval author and historian, is
clearly quite biased in favor of the ruling class, but is nevertheless a valuable contemporary report of
the causes of the uprising. Froissart focuses his attention on John Ball, an influential preacher who
helped incite the rebellion. According to Froissart s account, Ball preached against the economic
system of the time, railing against the luxurious clothes, houses, and food enjoyed by feudal lords at
the expense of the peasants labor. John Ball rooted his argument against this system in the Bible,
insisting that since all men were born from the same father and mother (Adam and Eve), all were thus
equal in the eyes of god. Though Froissart ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hilton stresses that these economies were self sufficient and durable, resilient even to the devastation
of war. The self contained and secure nature of the economies in these peasant communities leads
Hilton to conclude that they would have been perfectly capable of functioning without the intervention
of the higher classes. Moreover, Hilton proposes that the peasants may have been conscious of this.
Especially in light of the frequent rebellions, he suggests that medieval peasants were acutely aware
that their way of life had existed for far longer than the lords who exhorted rent and other payments
from them. Hilton also doesn t fail to mention that many of these lords only attained their lands
through conquest. From such a viewpoint, feudal lords seem less like even handed governors, and
more like an imposing mafia. As a Marxist, Hilton may be guilty of overstating the flawless workings
of the peasants alleged proto socialism; however, his explanation for the peasants frustrations is well
reasoned, and surely provides a more accurate view of the peasants thoughts than the works of most
medieval historians. It is therefore a beneficial source for my

Jack the Ripper and Lizzie Borden
A serial killer can be defined as a person who commits a series of murders, often with no apparent
motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern. (McGraw Hill) While
there have always been serial killers, the 1880 s had some of the most significant. Two of the most
notorious were Jack the Ripper and Lizzie Borden. While neither were convicted for their crimes, they
will both go down in history as some of the world s most brutal killers.
In Whitechapel, London in 1888, an insane serial killer roamed the streets who became known as the
Whitechapel Butcher. (Jones) No one knows who actually did it so over the years the murderer
became known as Jack the Ripper. He targeted prostitutes and brutally mutilated their bodies. A total
of women were murdered all of the murders happened with a mile of each other. He was not laid back
in how he handled the murders and cut them apart in such a way that was used to clearly show he
knew what he was doing. (Cook) The cuts and placement of said cuts were positioned and thought out
in a way only a medical professional would think to put them so it is concluded he had to be involved
in the medical field. (Biography.com Editors) There were also letters sent to the police. These were
suspected to be written by him but there was never firm proof and were passed off as fake. One of the
letters read Dear Boss,

The Canada s Aging Population
The Canada s aging population, those 55 years and older, stands at 30.8% of the Canada s total. This
segment of Canada s population is growing due to demographic factors such as births and deaths rates,
health and immigration, and will continue to grow for the next 50 years. Because of advances in
medicine, health and nutrition, Canadians are living longer and are more active. Many of them too,
have more disposable income than earlier generations of aged population. They see themselves as
alive, active and accomplishing , and higher percentage of are working into older age. They have
significant and varied, current, new and changing needs for services, some age specific, in the areas of
sports, exercise, activity and active recreation. To date, there has not been an adequate focus on

Example Of Educational Stratification
Beginning with the definition of stratification as the classification of different social units into classes,
I think the recognition of stratification in our lives is vitally important to be successful. This allows us
to thrive off the successes that result from different types of stratification to learning from our
mistakes and consequences from the disadvantages of stratification. Three examples of stratification
have personally played a major role in the development of my life and who I am today. From the good
to the bad, these examples opened opportunities for me while also teaching me valuable life lessons
from the consequences of stratification. The first example is educational stratification and how a
private school has impacted my life. The second example is being born into the family that I have
today and how their social class has influenced my life. The final example is growing up and living in
the environment and household I did and how that has played a role in my life.
One type of stratification that has influenced my life is educational stratification. I have been very
fortunate to be brought up in a house that gave me the opportunity to experience this. All my life I
have attended private schools because my parents wanted me to have the best quality education
possible. In their eyes, private schooling was the answer. Attending private school, this allowed me to

The Importance Of Experience In The Humanities Reflection
Throughout my time in the humanities sequence, I have constantly been surprised by the astounding
quantity of philosophical questions, topics, issues, and themes that we learned. It seemed that with
each new text we read, there was either a completely new subject matter for us to discuss or a different
perspective for us to contemplate. After reading all of the course texts and being exposed to all of their
ideologies, I now find it very difficult to try and focus on only a select few. All of these texts, from the
Bhagavad Gita to Ethics for the New Millennium, were all highly influential to me in some way and
seem equally as important from a philosophical standpoint, but I must admit that I appreciated some of
the subjects more so than others from a personal point of view. For example, some of my most
memorable experiences from the humanities sequence arose from our class discussions of The Trial
and Death of Socrates, a text we read all the way back in the first half of the Honors 201 semester. In
class, we worked to define what constitutes a sandwich following the logic of Socrates as shown in the
text. While there were some disagreements around this definition, such as whether or not a wrap
would constitute a sandwich (which it absolutely does), the class as a whole learned to question the
world and the items in it as we know them. As Socrates pointed out in the text and as we discovered in
the activity, human beings can readily be ignorant to what is around us,

Marijuana Should Marijuana Be Used For Medicinal Purposes...
Cannabis (or marijuana) is a common drug that is derived from a plant that has been around for
centuries. Many argue that cannabis can be used for medicinal purposes. Thus, many researchers
believe it is important to begin studying the effects that cannabis has on people. While this drug has
been deemed to having both beneficial and detrimental side effects, many individuals are still weary as
to what this drug may bring forth in terms of future medical discoveries, as well as other issues that
may come along with it. Therefore, findings and new developments of medications for various types
of diseases are being studied very closely in hopes of finding something that may create a huge impact
in the world of medicine once again. So, studies over marijuana for medicinal use has become
prevalent. With each new study there arises new questions as to whether marijuana would have a
positive or negative impact for certain medical issues in patients. Likewise, the question as to whether
this may negatively impact communities also comes in to play in regards to recreational use and
abuse. Advantages of Medical Marijuana The use of medical marijuana has been studied for various
medical issues. Many of these studies have shown that there are in fact some benefits for many
patients when they are using marijuana as a remedy. Medical marijuana is typically sought after by
patients experiencing medical issues including the following: epilepsy, cancer, chronic pain, eating

My Family At The United States
Just like any other immigrants coming to the United States, my family was in search for a better life.
My parents both came from Asia; my dad was from China and my mom was from Japan. Being a first
generation American, I was considered Nisei. I lived in San Jose California and stayed there my whole
life. My parents were hard working people and showed me what it meant to be truly American. I was
an only child and was twelve years old when the United States was attacked by the Japanese military.
My dad owned a store and my mom helped Japanese people come to America. She would provide
temporary housing. I always remember playing with the kids coming from Japan, I could never
understand them but they were really nice. After a few months they would pick up a few words. The
neighborhood kids loved playing with them as well their parents. Every now and then my family and
other Niseis would experience some forms of discrimination, like waiting in lines longer at the
movies, stores, and restaurants. Not to mention that all kinds of cultures received the same treatment.
But for some reason the African American group had it a little harder than we did. After the attack on
Pearl Harbor, my parents didn t let me play outside. Our neighbors and close friends turned on us.
They forbidden their children to play with me at home and at school. At the time I didn t understand it.
Also my dad would come home earlier than usual from work. He would always tell me that he just

result of the threat of punishment if they do not adhere to his strict rules: they will be beat. In beating
his slaves, Covey turns them into just another body; he never sees their mind. Douglass wants to be
move than just another body. He needs to free his mind in order to free his body. In order to gain his
freedom, Douglass must use his body and physically fight Covey. Through this fight, he frees his mind
of the fear of ever being whipped again. Douglass claims that he was never again what might be called
fairly whipped, though I remained a slave four years afterwards (43). Through this episode, Douglass
proves that first the mind must be liberated, and the body will eventually (maybe not immediately)
follow.

Essay on Water Long Hr Case Study
The performance of the Nuclear Tube Assembly Room has been significantly improved by Walter
Long s method of highly motivating his workers. The recommendations laid out in the Process
Engineer Proposal (PEP) will damage both the workers morale and Mr. Long s current success in the
NTAR. In order to successfully start the LDTC and maintain the improved performance of the NTAR,
I recommend the PEP be rejected and your company create a new proposal that (1) limits Harold
Singer s interaction with the NTAR employees; (2) has no fixed station assignment; (3) has no process
specifications; and (4) combines testing with operation.

Further, the employees shared accountabilities of the line. These employees demonstrate that each
individual task is important and relevant to the success of the branch as a whole, thereby empowering
each individual to perform at the highest level and benefit from the overall result.
Autonomy
Workers chose jobs that were most suitable for their skillset and simultaneously satisfied the
preferences and needs of the department. The room applied flexible scheduling and Mr. Long
decentralized decision making so that workers were free to choose how and when to do their tasks.
There were no supervisors in the room. Workers performances did not vary when the managers
appeared or not. They experienced responsibility for outcomes of their work.
Feedback
Mr. Long utilized employee evaluation sheets to give periodic reviews to his workers. He was always
careful and insistent that workers were given credit for everything they did. There exists a mutual
respect and trust between Mr. Long and workers so that workers never hide their mistakes from him. It
was the credits and rewards, rather than Mr. Long himself, that drove workers to get more done or
advance their knowledge and skills.
In total, all the core job dimensions led to both personal and corporate victories. The group enjoyed
high levels of job fulfillment and satisfaction with labor. They had high internal work motivation, high
quality work performance and low absenteeism and turnover. These positives

Immigration Laws And The United States Essay
About 28 million individuals moved to the United States between the years 1880 and the late 1920 s.
The newcomers living in different nations all through the world chose to leave there foundation of
source and move to the United States for different reasons, some of which included flexibility from
political and religious mistreatment, starvation, or to experience the American Dream of perceived
economic opportunity. Once settled; immigrants were often stereotyped and discriminated against
because they were distinctive . Social Justice was nonexistent as Employers often took advantage of
immigrants, men were paid less than other workers and women were paid less than men. (Library of
Congress, 1990) The numbers of newcomers dropped dramatically in 1924, when Congress passed
highly restrictive immigration legislation. (Bankston, Carl L., 1999). As time has passed the United
States Immigration laws have made it increasing more desirable for individuals to seek illegal entry as
opposed to the legal process. High control and subject to numerical confinements and qualification
prerequisites comprising of essential family or work relationship and absence of access to
compassionate security, for example, shelter or refugee status have played a noteworthy role.
(American Immigration Council, March 2012)
Although the United States has historically shown ambivalence toward newcomers who enter the

Roosevelt s Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine Essay
Before considering Professor X s assertion that the Roosevelt Corollary actually corrupted the Monroe
Doctrine s benevolent intent, it is worth considering whether or not the Monroe Docterine was as
benevolent as the unnamed professor seems to suggest. Professor X considers Monroe s 1823 Doctrine
an act of benevolence, in which an increasingly dominant world power generously extends protection
over its continental neighbors. Yet the Professor ignores the inherently imperialistic subtext that is
contained within the Doctrine, and thus his comparison of the Monroe Doctrine to the Roosevelt
Corollary omits a fundamental aspect of America s colonialist history.

Violence in Shakespeare s Julius Caesar
Violence is one of the most exaggerated forms of physical aggression and it can exist for a series of
reasons. It involves a person or a group of persons acting against another person or groups of persons
with the purpose to achieve one or several diverse goals. In many cases violence results from
individuals perceiving the acts of other people as hostile and thus wanting to act against these people
before it is too late. Depending on the situation, more or less individuals might get involved in an act
of violence, especially when they consider that it would be essential for them to do so.
William Shakespeare s tragedy Julius Caesar provides audiences with an account involving the Roman
dictator Julius Caesar, the 44 B.C. conspiracy that resulted in his violent assassination, and the
continued violence that dominated Rome consequent to his death. In spite of the fact that the play s
title is Julius Caesar, Caesar s character only appears in three scenes. The tragedy s central character is
Marcus Brutus and most of the storyline relates to him and to his failure to understand matters from a
general perspective when he has the chance to do so. The play actually demonstrates how violence can
emerge from individuals misinterpreting behavior seen in others and the idea of violence dominates
most of the play, shaping the way that characters interact and think.
From the very first lines of the play audiences are presented with the character of Murellus. This

The Insurance Industry and Business Ethics
Erik Cohen Business Ethics 26 September 2011 The Insurance Industry and Business Ethics The
Insurance industry is a perfect example of the use of grey areas in the culture of business ethics in the
United States. Within my research and years of experience in the field of insurance the use of business
ethics couldn t be of greater importance then the companies that provide the actual policies
themselves. Even with all of the regulations the Insurance Department puts on the insurance
companies, agents, brokers, and adjusters there are still areas where discrepancies in the code of
business practices exist. I will explain some of the insurance company s ways of motivation, monetary

Furthermore, the Department is in charge of approving corporate formations, mergers, and
consolidations. There are many different parts of the insurance industry and insurance companies, but
I will focus on the sales portion and the business ethics that encompass it. There are three kinds of
insurance sales professionals: Insurance Managing General Agents, Insurance Brokers, and Insurance
Agents. The Insurance Managing General Agent is defined legally as an individual or business entity
appointed by an insurer to solicit applications from agents for insurance contracts or to negotiate
insurance contracts on behalf of an insurer and, if authorized to do so by an insurer, to effectuate and
countersign insurance contracts. (Commission) An Insurance Broker can offer multiple insurance
products from multiple insurance carriers. Brokers are required to have a broker s license which
usually means the broker will have more education or experience than an agent. Brokers also have a
higher duty, in most states, to their clients. Brokers have the duty to analyze a business and secure
correct and adequate coverage for the business. This is a higher duty than the pure administrative duty
of the agent. (Boop) Brokers normally charge an administrative fee or a 2119c fee when purchasing a
policy through them. An Insurance Agent is an insurance professional that serves as a middle man

The Short Term Mission Trips
Think about the poverty and problems that all countries around the world are facing today and every
day. As Americans we have an urge to go into these countries to help as much as possible because of
that we have begun a revolution. Americans began going on mission trips around the 1960s but did not
really pick up until the 1990s. The trend grew after multiple natural disasters, Americans saw and need
and went, since then short term mission trips show no sign stopping anytime soon. As the popularity
of leaving our comfort zones, many people have found issues with the way the trips are led to the
extent of questioning whether or not these trips are really worth the amount of money and time that
they consume. Through periodicals, interviews, narratives, and articles, I will show the issues and
improvements that could be made to the living situations, attitude of the Americans, and relationships
that are acquired during the short term mission trips.
In October of 1998, Hurricane Mitch slammed onto the coasts of multiple South American countries.
Countless people lost their homes, over eleven thousand people lost their lives, and the hurricane left
five billion dollars worth of damage in its wake ( Hurricane Mitch ). This event caused a new wave of
events also of short term mission trips. Americans seeing the cities torn to shreds decided to act. For a

White Elephant Symbolism
The short story Hills Like White Elephant starts with detailed description of a train station in Spain
which turns into a dialog between an unmarried couple about an abortion. The story setting plays a big
role in how the characters will act and how they will express their feelings. Along with the setting
location, the time also plays an important role in the story. Hemingway uses a lot of symbols and
figurative language of speech, so the time of the story was not clear for most of the readers. However,
the story happened during the mid day during a very hot summer day which has a very important
symbolism in the story. The mid day represents that the day is not over, which symbolizes that they
not have made they decision. The couple were at a critical moment of their relationship, which is
when they must decide whether or not to have an abortion. Certain themes arise from this story such
as choices and their consequences, doubt and ambiguity. The hills across the valley of the Ebro were
long and white. On this side there was no shade and no trees and the station was between two lines of
rails in the sun. [...] The American and the girl with him sat at a table in the shade, outside the
building. It was very hot and the express from Barcelona would come in forty minutes. It stopped at
this junction for two minutes and went to Madrid (Page 176) The girl views having the child as a

Eric Schlosser s Fast Food Nation
Fast Food Nation (Assignment #2)
Chapter 1: Eric Schlosser used background information and sympathized on Carl Kartcher for specific
reasons. Schlosser wanted to show the readers that back in the 40s and 50s that fast food was not
nearly what it is today. They were family owned restaurants that spent a lot of time and money on
making the best products possible. Carl was able to start his own barbeque restaurant like he wanted
and it was a success. The sympathy that Schlosser used was to try and get the reader to agree with
him. Sympathy is an effective way to get the reader to agree with you because it deals with emotions
and emotions usually sway a reader to one side of the argument or the other.
Chapter 5: Artificial flavoring and coloring is a great success in the fast food industry because people
like paying for foods that look and taste great, but do not really know what is in it. When Schlosser

Malcolm Of The Malcolm X Journey
The Malcolm X Journey
Malcolm Little was born in the mid twentieth century, these were difficult times for the black youth.
As Little grew older he knew there needed to be change, he was one of the few people that was
capable of making that happen for the fellow African American and African. At a very young age
Malcolm grasped the concept that there s something not right, that there needed to be an alteration and
thus is where he started his studies. Malcolm needed to be outspoken he wanted to achieve a certain
impact on others. So he began reading into law, that was the only way for him to get some kind of
basic education. In the midst of his devotion to start a revolution, Malcolm Little s father was killed.
The rage and anger he had took over him and Malcolm became rebellious. Malcolm let go of all his
dreams that he once had and he became a troubled child and started committing felonies targeting
white people, such as armed robbery, burglary. In 1946 he was arrested, it was then and there where he
sat and the unconscious became conscious once again all because of a great influence. Malcolm Little
then changed to Malcolm X, he believed that X was his slave name that was lost. Malcolm X was

Movie Smoke Signals By Sherman Alexie And Chris Eyre
The Truth According to Who Writer Sherman Alexie and director Chris Eyre explore the relationship
between truth and fiction in storytelling and the complexities of the Indian oral tradition in the movie
Smoke Signals. The movie Smoke Signals follows two young Indian men, Victor and Thomas, on a

In another layer of story telling the details do not matter but the truthful representation of an idea is
what is critical. In a scene where Victor and Irene are talking about Victors trip Irene is making fry
bread. Irene says of her method of making fry bread I don t just make it by myself you know, I got the
recipe from your grandmother and she got it from her grandmother and I listen to people when they
eat my bread. (Smoke Signals) Like stories, recipes are handed down from generation to generation
and blended and changed as they are retold or remade. In this way we can see how stories and recipes
are analogous, both represent the oral tradition. While preserving the past they become something
new, not exactly the same but fundamentally the same expression of an idea. The exact recipe for fry
bread and the exact details of a story are not what is important just that they faithfully express the
idea. Irene acknowledges the foundation of her successful recipe but blended in new ideas and came to
make the best fry bread. Sherman Alexie adds a layer of complexity to the film by letting symbolism
tell a separate story within some scenes. Cultural sovereignty and oppression are themes that run
through out Smoke Signals. Many strong symbols elude to this in the scene when Vincent and Thomas
are in the office of the police chief

The Christian Of Harry Potter Essay
The Christian themes in Harry Potter have been undermined by Christian fundamentalists beliefs that
the Potter stories are a gateway into satanic culture. While these stories are loved by so many, there is
a section of the population that condemns them as a satanic welcoming. To fully understand the
condemnation of Harry Potter and the push to eradicate this condemnation we will address several
lenses of the argument; to start there will be a quick history of the condemnation, and an overview of
that specific audiences perspective on the novels. Next to be presented will be an overview of the
Christian allegories found in the Potter novels, and finally, the argument put forward by some
Christians, Christians wishing to reclaim the Harry Potter novels as a quote on quote Christian themed
series. J.K. Rowling s first Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone, was first
published in the UK in 1997, and was published in the US in 1998; the movie was then distributed by
Warner Bros. in 2001. Even before it s theatrical release many educators found themselves at odds
with the novel due to it s magical nature. In March of 2000 Carol Rookwood, the head of a Catholic
primary school, banned the novel. Her reasoning, The Bible is very clear and consistent in its
teachings that wizards, devils and demons exist and are very real, powerful and dangerous, and God s

Black Hawk Down By Mark Bowden
For my cultural event I watch a war film. I decided to watch the movie Black Hawk Down. This
movie was based off of a true story and the book Black Hawk Down written by Mark Bowden. It was
directed by Ridley Scott. It was released October 10, 2002, nine years after the event happened. Many
people fought in this war and their stores were told in this film. On of them was sergeant Matt
Eversmann who was played by Josh Hartnett. Private John Grimes was played by Ewan McGregor.
Tom Sizemore played the character Mcknight. There were many other soldiers in the movie that also
played a very significant role in this war story. Black Hawk Down is about a group of U.S. special
forces, also know at the Delta forces, who were sent into Somalia to help the people. They were there
to provide aid and food to the starving people. While there they went to arrest president Mohamed
Farrah Aidid while trying to avoid the Militia and his military. The movie is about the Battle of
Mogadishu that happened on October 3, 1993. What was supposed to be an hour mission, but turned
into a day and a half rescue mission. After the helicopters dropped their men two Black Hawks were
shot down and others had been badly damaged. Thus the name Black Hawk Down. The soldiers had
no way to get out because the helicopters had gone down. They spent that day and night under gun fire
waiting for rescuers to come. On the morning of October 4th they had halves armed military cars

What Is An Example Of Consumerism In Fight Club
In Fight Club, there are multitudes of examples of the culture industry and its effects on the masses.
As an audience, it can be seen from two different perspectives; the first is in terms of the Narrator and
the second is through Tyler Durden, a second personality of the narrator who suffers from mental
illness. The narrator lives an empty life and tries to find meaning or purpose through the IKEA
catalogue while decorating his home. In turn, Tyler is the exact opposite he doesn t answer to anybody,
he does what he wants, when he wants and doesn t let anything or anyone stop him. Evidently this is

As an audience, throughout the film it is evident that there is a significant contrast between the
narrator and Tyler as they view many things differently. Just like the Fight Club and the IKEA
furniture, the narrator becomes obsessed with Tyler and the life he leads. When Tyler is first
introduced as a passenger on the airplane, the narrator is immediately drawn to him in a way that is
different than any other person he has met. He feels a connection with him that he has not felt before,
which is why he calls him when his apartment burns and he loses all of his important IKEA furniture.
Tyler tells him it s just stuff (Fight Club) and the things you own end up owning you (Fight Club),
which completely contradicts everything the narrator had previously believed about his home and the
furniture. Through Tyler, the narrator starts to lose his need for material objects when Tyler tells him
Fuck off with your sofa units and strine green stripe patterns, I say never be complete, I say stop being
perfect, I say let... let s evolve, let the chips fall where they may (Fight Club), instead he focuses on
the fighting and his friendship with Tyler since he has finally found something that fills the void in his
life and gives it meaning. Though it may seem abstract that Tyler would fit into this argument, it all
comes together at the end of the film when the audience finds

When life is taking place can one person really tell everything? Information is key when reading.
Every detail puts thoughts in your head, so you can take everything in. Beowulf talks about people
being born by the god to the nation. After a boy child was born to Shield, a cub in the yard, a comfort

religious belief within the Anglo Saxons. When reading the Epic poem Beowulf, third person point of

What does kinship mean to you? Do people think family comes first? The Anglo Saxons take
everything very seriously which includes religion and family. Before long the fierce contenders
clashed again. The hoard guard took heart, inhaled and swelled up and got a new wind; he who had

NEO COLONIALISM Neocolonialism describes how, after World War II, colonial powers started
using economics i.e. lending and interest rates, to control former colonies and cultivate new areas,
thereby creating political, economic and social dependencies. Neocolonialism describes certain
economic operations at the international level which have alleged similarities to the traditional
colonialism of the 16th to the 20th centuries. The contention is that governments have aimed to
control other nations through indirect means; that in lieu of direct military political control,
neocolonialist powers employ economic, financial, and trade policies to dominate less powerful

Upon gaining independence, some national leaders and opposition groups argued that their countries
were being subjected to a new form of colonialism, waged by the former colonial powers and other

in coups resulting in a regime acting in the interests of France but against its country s own interests.
Denunciations of neocolonialism also became popular with some national independence movements

The Paintings On The Ceiling Of The Sistine Chapel
One of the most famous painter and sculptors of the Italian Renaissance, the age of renewal and
cultural achievement circa 1500, was the artistic genius Michelangelo Buonarroti. The man that
desired nothing but perfection often reached it in his work. He captured the motion of the human
figure and the anatomy of muscles in a way that was increasingly beautiful and startlingly realistic.
Whether because of one of the most famous sculptures in history, the David or the paintings on the
ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, that became the textbook examples for the art period of High
Renaissance, Michelango s art changed the world and he will continue to be studied with awe
throughout history.
Michelangelo s era, the Renaissance was not a time of great social or economic change, only cultural
and ideological development because it only affected a small portion of the population, which were
the rich and powerful scholars that had more surplus money to spend on luxury goods like art and
architecture. One of these families the Medicis rose to prominence and held the position of the
Florence s leading family for three centuries. The Medici family controlled the republican government

  • 2. Existentialism In No Exit Existentialism concentrates on human existence and an individual discovering their meaning and purpose in life. It involves free will and the ability to make choices, while taking responsibility for the outcomes of those decisions. Existentialism is composed of five different elements, which are authenticity, angst, anxiety, freedom, and absurdity. In Jean Paul Sartre s play titled No Exit , the multiple elements of existentialism are portrayed through the characters; Garcin, Estelle, and Inez. One of the elements of existentialism that is present in No Exit is absurdity. Garcin finds himself in complete disbelief when he realizes that hell is absolutely nothing like the depiction that is given on earth. In the play, he states So this is hell. I d never have believed it. You remember all we were told about were the torture chambers, the fire and brimstone... Instead of the common belief that hell is nothing but a fire pit of agony, Garcin finds it to be just as normal as life on earth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She states What s the point of play acting, trying to throw dust in each other s eyes?,...we are criminals murderers all three of us...and people aren t damned for nothing. Inez understands that each of them were free to do as they please, and as a result of their decisions they must face the consequence. She also states I prefer to choose my hell; I prefer to look you in the eyes and fight it out face to face. The three Garcin, Estelle, and Inez find one another very annoying and impossible to get along with. Unlike Garcin and Estelle, who complain every second they can, Inez deals with it head on. She doesn t deny the crimes she has committed, nor does she question why she has been placed in hell. Inez embodies the idea of freedom, as it pertains to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Mental Health And Poverty Poverty and Health Introduction On any given day, approximately 3 billion people in the world live on less than $2.50 a day, while approximately 1.5 billion people live off less than $1.25 (Do something). Living off such conditions can negatively affect individuals not only physically, but also cognitively, socially, and emotionally. Poverty can also leads to many adverse outcomes such as poor nutrition, low weight, chronic illness, and even death. While studying poverty in America, researchers have outlined the relationship between poverty and health, discovering negative consequences pertaining to mental health, prenatal health, and access to medical treatment. Mental Health Mental health is often regarded as the well being of an individual socially, emotionally, and psychologically that is dynamically influenced by physical, social, and environmental factors (WHO). When studying the prevalence of mental illness, recent research has indicated varying patterns among various social classes. Because of this, researchers were able to connect poverty and mental health, indicating that individuals living in low socioeconomic or homeless conditions pose a greater risk for developing a mental illness. While studying the relationship between mental illness and poverty, researchers have found substantial evidence supporting the predisposition among children in low income households. Researchers found that children of low income families demonstrate high levels of conduct ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Of course this machine doesn t actually exist, but it represents a perfect example of what life would be like if we could experience all of the pleasures we could possibly desire. • 10. Volcano s A Volcano Eruption By Cliff Montgomery Volcano How to Survive Them. When it comes to surviving, people will take whatever means are necessary to live just a little bit longer. An example of this could be a point in the movie Titanic. In order to survive the boat sinking, Rose rested on a piece of furniture that was drifting in the water. As a result, she was one of the few people to actually be alive and rescued when the boats came back. When it comes to survival, at that moment in time there is no rule book on what measure one can take to survive but a person should know the basics. Volcanoes are a good example of this. Volcano s: How to Survive a Volcano Eruption by Cliff Montgomery s article is effective because it acknowledges what is in a volcano, explain what to do when a volcano is erupting and provides knowledge about what to watch out for. In the article: Volcano s How to Survive a Volcano Eruption by Cliff Montgomery , he gives people a knowledge of Volcano s in depth. Montgomery first starts out giving background information about places where volcano eruptions have occurred what the effects of those eruptions have done to the city and the people. Next, he goes into the workshop about how volcano s work and what is exactly inside of them that does so much harm. • 11. Business Impact Analysis of Russell Landing Marina Essay Business impact analysis is the process of systematically addressing all of the risks associated with a solution and identifying if it actually worked. Many formulas exist, designed to show what factors are included when compiling an analysis. The simple formula of multiplying threats by your asset and dividing that total by mitigating factors represents an impact analysis. Threats are those instances that cause an operational or financial strain on your organization. These occurrences are the cause of limited operations during business hours or no operations at all and computed in time. Assets are defined as many elements, but are primarily composed of physical assets (equipment, material, supplies, furnishings, etc.) that are owned by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Damoense, M. Y., Agbola). The threat in this situation is the person hours potentially lost based on having too many employees and not enough work. The inverse is also important as you could have a small number of employees with a lot of business and then customer satisfaction suffers, driving profits down. All the equipment owned as well as the facility are considered assets in this situation. Potential revenue is also included in this figure. Without changing anything, there would be no mitigating factors so an analysis would concur that nothing obviously changed. Active Impact on Future Operations As noted previously, the threats and assets do not change. There is the same latent problem of losing person hours based on not appropriating for business that day. This causes lost revenue either paid to the employee or not paid by the potential customer. The difference between the idle impact and active impact is that the mitigating factor changes the analysis figures. The solution would be to be able to track usage of the facility and correlate that to semi public deployment schedules. Knowing how much of the base is gone at any given point in time can help with the expected number of customers per day. This is linked to a percentage in terms of customers and total available customers (active duty military and their family living on base). This mitigating factor will dramatically reduce the costs associated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Revolt Of 1381 Summary This account of the Peasants Revolt of 1381 by Jean Froissart, a medieval author and historian, is clearly quite biased in favor of the ruling class, but is nevertheless a valuable contemporary report of the causes of the uprising. Froissart focuses his attention on John Ball, an influential preacher who helped incite the rebellion. According to Froissart s account, Ball preached against the economic system of the time, railing against the luxurious clothes, houses, and food enjoyed by feudal lords at the expense of the peasants labor. John Ball rooted his argument against this system in the Bible, insisting that since all men were born from the same father and mother (Adam and Eve), all were thus equal in the eyes of god. Though Froissart ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hilton stresses that these economies were self sufficient and durable, resilient even to the devastation of war. The self contained and secure nature of the economies in these peasant communities leads Hilton to conclude that they would have been perfectly capable of functioning without the intervention of the higher classes. Moreover, Hilton proposes that the peasants may have been conscious of this. Especially in light of the frequent rebellions, he suggests that medieval peasants were acutely aware that their way of life had existed for far longer than the lords who exhorted rent and other payments from them. Hilton also doesn t fail to mention that many of these lords only attained their lands through conquest. From such a viewpoint, feudal lords seem less like even handed governors, and more like an imposing mafia. As a Marxist, Hilton may be guilty of overstating the flawless workings of the peasants alleged proto socialism; however, his explanation for the peasants frustrations is well reasoned, and surely provides a more accurate view of the peasants thoughts than the works of most medieval historians. Serial Killers Of Jack The Ripper And Lizzie Borden Karis Kennedy Burrow American Lit 11/3/17 Jack the Ripper and Lizzie Borden A serial killer can be defined as a person who commits a series of murders, often with no apparent motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern. (McGraw Hill) While there have always been serial killers, the 1880 s had some of the most significant. Two of the most notorious were Jack the Ripper and Lizzie Borden. While neither were convicted for their crimes, they will both go down in history as some of the world s most brutal killers. In Whitechapel, London in 1888, an insane serial killer roamed the streets who became known as the Whitechapel Butcher. (Jones) No one knows who actually did it so over the years the murderer became known as Jack the Ripper. He targeted prostitutes and brutally mutilated their bodies. A total of women were murdered all of the murders happened with a mile of each other. He was not laid back in how he handled the murders and cut them apart in such a way that was used to clearly show he knew what he was doing. (Cook) The cuts and placement of said cuts were positioned and thought out in a way only a medical professional would think to put them so it is concluded he had to be involved in the medical field. (Biography.com Editors) There were also letters sent to the police. These were suspected to be written by him but there was never firm proof and were passed off as fake. This segment of Canada s population is growing due to demographic factors such as births and deaths rates, health and immigration, and will continue to grow for the next 50 years. • 18. Example Of Educational Stratification Beginning with the definition of stratification as the classification of different social units into classes, I think the recognition of stratification in our lives is vitally important to be successful. This allows us to thrive off the successes that result from different types of stratification to learning from our mistakes and consequences from the disadvantages of stratification. Three examples of stratification have personally played a major role in the development of my life and who I am today. From the good to the bad, these examples opened opportunities for me while also teaching me valuable life lessons from the consequences of stratification. The first example is educational stratification and how a private school has impacted my life. The second example is being born into the family that I have today and how their social class has influenced my life. The final example is growing up and living in the environment and household I did and how that has played a role in my life. One type of stratification that has influenced my life is educational stratification. I have been very fortunate to be brought up in a house that gave me the opportunity to experience this. The Importance Of Experience In The Humanities Reflection Throughout my time in the humanities sequence, I have constantly been surprised by the astounding quantity of philosophical questions, topics, issues, and themes that we learned. It seemed that with each new text we read, there was either a completely new subject matter for us to discuss or a different perspective for us to contemplate. After reading all of the course texts and being exposed to all of their ideologies, I now find it very difficult to try and focus on only a select few. All of these texts, from the Bhagavad Gita to Ethics for the New Millennium, were all highly influential to me in some way and seem equally as important from a philosophical standpoint, but I must admit that I appreciated some of the subjects more so than others from a personal point of view. For example, some of my most memorable experiences from the humanities sequence arose from our class discussions of The Trial and Death of Socrates, a text we read all the way back in the first half of the Honors 201 semester. In class, we worked to define what constitutes a sandwich following the logic of Socrates as shown in the text. While there were some disagreements around this definition, such as whether or not a wrap would constitute a sandwich (which it absolutely does), the class as a whole learned to question the world and the items in it as we know them. As Socrates pointed out in the text and as we discovered in the activity, human beings can readily be ignorant to what is around us, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This can be seen in Douglass s constant quest for knowledge. In the beginning, he focuses on his total ignorance so that throughout the narrative, it is easy for the reader to understand the progress he has been making. The best example of the mind requiring liberation before the body is Douglass s fight with Covey. This man mentally abuses his slaves by making them fear his constant watch. The fear is a direct result of the threat of punishment if they do not adhere to his strict rules: they will be beat. In beating his slaves, Covey turns them into just another body; he never sees their mind. Douglass wants to be move than just another body. He needs to free his mind in order to free his body. In order to gain his freedom, Douglass must use his body and physically fight Covey. Through this fight, he frees his mind of the fear of ever being whipped again. Douglass claims that he was never again what might be called fairly whipped, though I remained a slave four years afterwards (43). • 26. Violence in Shakespeare s Julius Caesar Violence is one of the most exaggerated forms of physical aggression and it can exist for a series of reasons. It involves a person or a group of persons acting against another person or groups of persons with the purpose to achieve one or several diverse goals. In many cases violence results from individuals perceiving the acts of other people as hostile and thus wanting to act against these people before it is too late. Depending on the situation, more or less individuals might get involved in an act of violence, especially when they consider that it would be essential for them to do so. William Shakespeare s tragedy Julius Caesar provides audiences with an account involving the Roman dictator Julius Caesar, the 44 B.C. conspiracy that resulted in his violent assassination, and the continued violence that dominated Rome consequent to his death. In spite of the fact that the play s title is Julius Caesar, Caesar s character only appears in three scenes. The tragedy s central character is Marcus Brutus and most of the storyline relates to him and to his failure to understand matters from a general perspective when he has the chance to do so. The play actually demonstrates how violence can emerge from individuals misinterpreting behavior seen in others and the idea of violence dominates most of the play, shaping the way that characters interact and think. White Elephant Symbolism The short story Hills Like White Elephant starts with detailed description of a train station in Spain which turns into a dialog between an unmarried couple about an abortion. The story setting plays a big role in how the characters will act and how they will express their feelings. Along with the setting location, the time also plays an important role in the story. Hemingway uses a lot of symbols and figurative language of speech, so the time of the story was not clear for most of the readers. However, the story happened during the mid day during a very hot summer day which has a very important symbolism in the story. The mid day represents that the day is not over, which symbolizes that they not have made they decision. The couple were at a critical moment of their relationship, which is when they must decide whether or not to have an abortion. Tyler tells him it s just stuff (Fight Club) and the things you own end up owning you (Fight Club), which completely contradicts everything the narrator had previously believed about his home and the furniture. Through Tyler, the narrator starts to lose his need for material objects when Tyler tells him Fuck off with your sofa units and strine green stripe patterns, I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say let... let s evolve, let the chips fall where they may (Fight Club), instead he focuses on the fighting and his friendship with Tyler since he has finally found something that fills the void in his life and gives it meaning. Though it may seem abstract that Tyler would fit into this argument, it all comes together at the end of the film when the audience finds ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Neocolonialism describes certain economic operations at the international level which have alleged similarities to the traditional colonialism of the 16th to the 20th centuries. The contention is that governments have aimed to control other nations through indirect means; that in lieu of direct military political control, neocolonialist powers employ economic, financial, and trade policies to dominate less powerful countries. Those who subscribe to the concept maintain this amounts to a de ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Upon gaining independence, some national leaders and opposition groups argued that their countries were being subjected to a new form of colonialism, waged by the former colonial powers and other developed nations. In Africa, the French played a prominent role in charges of conducting a neocolonialist policy, and that French troops in Africa were (and it is argued, still are) often involved in coups resulting in a regime acting in the interests of France but against its country s own interests. Denunciations of neocolonialism also became popular with some national independence movements while they were still waging anti colonial armed struggle. During the 1970s, in the Portuguese colonies of Mozambique and Angola, for example, the rhetoric espoused by the Marxist movements FRELIMO and MPLA (respectively), which were to eventually assume power upon those nations independence, rejected both old colonialism and neocolonialism. NEOCOLONIALIST ALLEGATIONS AGAINST THE IMF Those who argue that neocolonialism historically supplanted or supplemented colonialism, point to the fact that Africa today pays more money every year (in loan interest payments) to the IMF/WB than it receives in loans from them, thereby often ... He captured the motion of the human figure and the anatomy of muscles in a way that was increasingly beautiful and startlingly realistic.
