Synaptic transmission allows neurons to communicate with each other via either electrical or chemical synapses. At chemical synapses, an action potential causes neurotransmitters to be released from the presynaptic neuron. These neurotransmitters then bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, causing ion channels to open and generate electrical signals. The integration of these signals determines whether the postsynaptic neuron fires an action potential. Neurotransmission provides flexibility that allows for complex neuronal processing and behaviors.
