Education and Training
Research highlighted that only 13% of
hospital staff had training in end of life care2
To address this, a number of training
programmes are now in place
• 1,039 people have attended ‘Dealing with
Bad News’ with 474 attending ‘Final
Journeys’ to date
Practical Help and Support for
Families
•2 Car Parking spaces made available free
of charge for relatives
•Flexibility in visiting time for relatives
visiting a seriously ill patient
•Specially designed handover bag
introduced for returning deceased patients
belongings to relatives
•Information leaflets for bereaved relatives
explaining the next steps and supports
available
Audit and Research
•Since 2010, we have increased the
number of people cared for in single rooms
at end of life by 37%, resulting in better
patient and family care
•In collaboration with St James Hospital ,
UCD and TCD we have surveyed bereaved
relatives (356 responded) to ascertain
their experiences of care
Enhancing the environment
•We have completely refurbished 8 family
rooms on our wards. The rooms have free
tea/ coffee and facilities to allow a family
member stay overnight
• 5 More family room refurbishments are in
progress
•An end of life care family suite has also
been developed
