Aging in Place
An article published by the American Society for Interior Design (ASID) entitled “Home
for a Lifetime: Interior Design for Active Aging” introduces a growing market within interior
design, creating safe environments for the elderly to age in place without leaving their homes.
Many baby boomers prefer to stay in their current homes as they age due to comfort, a familiar
community setting, and ownership of their homes. The income and assets of the middle aged-
older generations will allow them to hire interior designers to make their homes suitable for
aging in place. The ASID has both issued and learned from several studies which show that a
majority of baby boomers own their own homes and are willing to spend the money necessary to
equip their homes for independent aging. Older residents want their homes to offer comfort,
safety and mobility, and areas for hospitality and entertainment of friends and family. Studies
conducted by the ASID, Hanley Wood LLC, and other companies revealed that baby boomers
often prefer single-family homes with wide clearances as well as high-tech, low-maintenance
features. The biggest things for designer to consider in aging-in-place environments are ease of
access and the homeowners’s safety. Falling among the elderly creates a major concern. The
ASID encourages designers to “Gain knowledge of the aging process, lifestage needs and
appropriate products” as they design with the elderly in mind. Simple action steps such as
increasing lighting and removing clutter can make access and mobility easier. Many among the
aging community prefer single-story homes that make mobility easier and remove the danger and
difficulty which stairs may present. Homeowners considered the future of their homes just as
much as, if not more, than they considered healthcare and financial security for their household.
Another article written by Drue Lawlor, chair of the ASID Aging in Place Council, shows
how “Sustainable Design Begins with Universal Design.” She asks, “Why not design for the
health of the home and the homeowner and consider the investment in the future of both?” By
preserving and adapting homes for longtime use, the environment is carefully considered and
resources are conserved. Creating environments which consider the future of the homeowner
goes hand-in-hand with the longevity, careful planning, and earth-conscious choices of
sustainable design. Additionally, planning ahead for future health and safety features saves
money and stress for homeowners. Lawlor points out that one of the greatest benefits of aging in
place is the sense of independence and well-being maintained for homeowners. She writes, “The

Green Ambassadors - Overview revised
This document announces a new program called "Green Ambassadors for Rexdale - Everything Old is New Again" funded by the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors program. The program is for adults aged 55+ living in Rexdale and includes educational outings to learn ecological practices on Tuesday afternoons, creating a group art piece from recycled materials on Thursdays, and filming personal stories about living a green lifestyle to create an educational video. The program runs from September 2015 to March 2016.

Bali sustainability jam 2017 proposal - general

The students of Class 2B at Pant Nagar Municipal School No. 3 in Mumbai conducted a project called "Giving Nature" to recognize how nature gives to us and ways to give back. They went on a nature trail where they learned about different animals and their habitats. They realized how their lives depend on nature. The students then imagined ways to reduce garbage and protect trees. They implemented these by making recycled crafts and planting 116 custard apple plants. Finally, they shared their work with others to encourage more conservation efforts.

This portfolio contains summaries of three art projects Hope Dangler led with different populations:
1) A fabric canopy installation created with adults with cognitive impairments at a community center to provide a safe space.
2) Pom pom paintings made by 4-6 year olds at a Montessori school to explore color, texture, and fine motor skills.
3) Pinch pot ceramics created by adolescents with mental disorders to learn a new skill and socialize while improving stability.
Interaction Design Method - Contextual Inquiry
Two women were interviewed about various DIY projects they had undertaken in their home. The projects ranged from utilitarian modifications like converting a cedar chest into a cat box enclosure to aesthetic changes like using wrapping paper as wallpaper in the dining room. The women found inspiration on sites like Pinterest and enjoyed repurposing used items to save money. They valued the sense of accomplishment from completing projects quickly and modifying designs as needed. Any "Internet of Things" or creativity tools should allow for flexibility, encourage reuse of materials, and enable rapid prototyping to match these women's approach to everyday design.

Learn today, teach tomorrow (learning enviro) diana pableo
Diana Pableo conducted a waste management project in her community to address the lack of proper waste segregation. She surveyed households and found that most did not separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable trash. Over two days, she visited and informed eight households about the importance of proper waste segregation. As a result of her small project, awareness was raised in the community and barangay officials promised to provide separate trash cans to further encourage proper waste management practices.
Communtiy garden presentation
The Lind community garden provides free garden space for families to grow food. It started in 2013 and is maintained through donations and grants as it requires significant manual labor. The students chose to help the garden because it was recommended by a community member and they wanted to learn how it benefits families in Lind by providing an inexpensive way to garden together and build skills. Their project involved preparing garden beds, planting flowers, spreading woodchips, and promoting the garden to students to raise awareness of its educational and community benefits.

Green Ambassadors - Overview revised

Bali sustainability jam 2017 proposal - general

The students of Class 2B at Pant Nagar Municipal School No. 3 in Mumbai conducted a project called "Giving Nature" to recognize how nature gives to us and ways to give back. They went on a nature trail where they learned about different animals and their habitats. They realized how their lives depend on nature. The students then imagined ways to reduce garbage and protect trees. They implemented these by making recycled crafts and planting 116 custard apple plants. Finally, they shared their work with others to encourage more conservation efforts.

This portfolio contains summaries of three art projects Hope Dangler led with different populations:
1) A fabric canopy installation created with adults with cognitive impairments at a community center to provide a safe space.
2) Pom pom paintings made by 4-6 year olds at a Montessori school to explore color, texture, and fine motor skills.
3) Pinch pot ceramics created by adolescents with mental disorders to learn a new skill and socialize while improving stability.
Interaction Design Method - Contextual Inquiry
Two women were interviewed about various DIY projects they had undertaken in their home. The projects ranged from utilitarian modifications like converting a cedar chest into a cat box enclosure to aesthetic changes like using wrapping paper as wallpaper in the dining room. The women found inspiration on sites like Pinterest and enjoyed repurposing used items to save money. They valued the sense of accomplishment from completing projects quickly and modifying designs as needed. Any "Internet of Things" or creativity tools should allow for flexibility, encourage reuse of materials, and enable rapid prototyping to match these women's approach to everyday design.

Diana Pableo conducted a waste management project in her community to address the lack of proper waste segregation. She surveyed households and found that most did not separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable trash. Over two days, she visited and informed eight households about the importance of proper waste segregation. As a result of her small project, awareness was raised in the community and barangay officials promised to provide separate trash cans to further encourage proper waste management practices.
Communtiy garden presentation
The Lind community garden provides free garden space for families to grow food. It started in 2013 and is maintained through donations and grants as it requires significant manual labor. The students chose to help the garden because it was recommended by a community member and they wanted to learn how it benefits families in Lind by providing an inexpensive way to garden together and build skills. Their project involved preparing garden beds, planting flowers, spreading woodchips, and promoting the garden to students to raise awareness of its educational and community benefits.

Tupperware Petite Blossom Campaign

- 2. Sustainability Connectors (Ages 11-14) | November 2, 2020 Create art together! Join your kids making art! Paint, take pictures, make drawings, write poems, or make music together about sustainable homes. Post on Instagram (be sure to tag “aina_thrive”) or send your home art to kurt.love@ainathrive.org so we can post it on the website under Families Making Art Together! We are at a place that is just a beginning for what living spaces can be in terms of being sustainable. This week’s lesson is all about exploring possibilities. There are many different attempts and approaches to building sustainable homes, and this week is about understanding those differences. There are many different approaches to building sustainable homes. Below are three very different approaches. Design #1: Watch this video focusing on a sophisticated sustainable home design. Design #2: Watch this video about Earthship houses. Design #3: Watch this video about a sustainable tiny house. Activity sheet: Describe similarities of different sustainable home designs. This will be the base for your design! Time to show your artistry! We want to see your sustainable home designs and drawings, and we are going post them online! They will be part of a sustainability art exhibit. Take a picture, make a drawing, paint a picture of your ultimate sustainability house, write a poem, or sing a song (or use an instrument) to share your sustainable home design with other Aina artists!. Send it to kurt.love@ainathrive.org with your name and location (if you wish) or post it to Instagram (tag “aina_thrive”), and we will share our thoughts about your art and post it on a web page for others to appreciate! Sustainable Living at Home (Part 2): The Ultimate Sustainable Home Making a fully sustainable home is no small task given that building practices rarely take much more than energy efficiency into consideration. This article provides a graphic that gives an overview of the many different possibilities that can make a single-family home more sustainable. Here is a second article that provides more information and advice. This has many financial considerations, and much needs to be done in society to support those that do not have financial security. We have a long way to go to make all homes sustainable homes, but these are some starting places. 1. Identify sustainability practices used by others at their homes. 2.
