Eating locally and seasonally is a huge positive step any time
someone can do it even though it may not happen every time. Trying
makes a difference.
Activity sheet: Use the questions to have a discussion about eating
locally and seasonally together.
Eating food that is local and seasonal happens to be better for our health and
the health of the planet. Food that travels thousands of miles to get to your
grocery store tends to be less nutritious and required a great deal of fossil
fuel to get there. This week is an introduction to local food in your area, when
it is available, and making a year-round plan of what is available in your area.
Go to your nearest grocery store, look for at least 5 ingredients to make a
salad (vegetable or fruit).
Activity sheet: Write down all of the locations where each of the ingredients
came from, and add up the amount of miles that they took to get to your store
or home.
Watch this video on the benefits of eating locally and in season.
Activity sheet: Answer the questions based on the video, and provide a
reflection of your thinking.
Look at this website to see what foods are available in your area throughout
the year.

Local & In-Season Food
Living sustainably includes how we eat. Currently, there is a global system of growing
food that relies heavily on fossil fuels for its transportation. Local growers and
farmers are often pushed aside for sometimes the same foods grown and shipped
from other continents. Buying locally and seasonally is much more sustainable and
tends to be healthier. Here is a list that gets right to the point of why eating locally
matters. Take some time to figure out how much of a challenge it is (much like this
video) to buy as much locally and seasonally. Use this website in the U.S. as a guide
for what is available locally any time of year.
1. Identify the disadvantages of a global food system.
2. Identify foods that are locally available and in season any time of year.
3. Create a plan to eat more local, in-season foods as a family.

Sustainability Lesson Week 4 of 4 - Aina Builders (Grades 3-5)

  • 2. Sustainability Builders | November 9, 2020 Eating locally and seasonally is a huge positive step any time someone can do it even though it may not happen every time. Trying makes a difference. Activity sheet: Use the questions to have a discussion about eating locally and seasonally together. Eating food that is local and seasonal happens to be better for our health and the health of the planet. Food that travels thousands of miles to get to your grocery store tends to be less nutritious and required a great deal of fossil fuel to get there. This week is an introduction to local food in your area, when it is available, and making a year-round plan of what is available in your area. Go to your nearest grocery store, look for at least 5 ingredients to make a salad (vegetable or fruit). Activity sheet: Write down all of the locations where each of the ingredients came from, and add up the amount of miles that they took to get to your store or home. Watch this video on the benefits of eating locally and in season. Activity sheet: Answer the questions based on the video, and provide a reflection of your thinking. Look at this website to see what foods are available in your area throughout the year. Activity sheet: Create a list of foods that are in season and local throughout the year. Local & In-Season Food Living sustainably includes how we eat. Currently, there is a global system of growing food that relies heavily on fossil fuels for its transportation. Local growers and farmers are often pushed aside for sometimes the same foods grown and shipped from other continents. Buying locally and seasonally is much more sustainable and tends to be healthier. Here is a list that gets right to the point of why eating locally matters. Take some time to figure out how much of a challenge it is (much like this video) to buy as much locally and seasonally. Use this website in the U.S. as a guide for what is available locally any time of year. 1. Identify the disadvantages of a global food system. 2. Identify foods that are locally available and in season any time of year. 3. Create a plan to eat more local, in-season foods as a family.
