This document provides an update to the 2008 Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines for the management of severe sepsis and septic shock. It was created by an international committee of 68 experts from 30 organizations using the GRADE methodology. The guidelines contain recommendations in three categories: those directly targeting severe sepsis, those targeting general critical care, and pediatric considerations. Key recommendations include early resuscitation, infection source control, appropriate antibiotic therapy, and protocolized management of fluids, vasopressors, glycemic control and other aspects of care. The guidelines are intended to improve outcomes for patients with severe sepsis and septic shock worldwide.
