the workplace
Based on a Skype commissioned survey
about “The Future of Work”
•  Online study of 1,000 technology-empowered workers in the US
    •  500 end users
    •  500 decision-makers
•  Businesses ranging in size from SOHO to large enterprise,
   across all industry sectors
•  Survey took place from 24 November - 1 December 2010
•  Research was conducted by Incites, based on a sample
   provided by Research Now, one of the leading global online
   business and consumer panels
The workplace has radically shifted

•  62% of firms have remote workers

•  Of the firms that do, one third (34%) of employees work away
   from the office; at client, customer or partner premises; at home
   or in public spaces

•  And these remote workers spend 40% of their time on average
   away from the office
Not just remote, work is becoming more flexible
as people work anytime and anywhere
•  57% of firms allow flexible working hours, that fit with employees
   lives, rather than “standard office hours”

•  Only 1 in 5 managers surveyed worried about the productivity of
   flexible workers

•  In two thirds of organizations, workers can bring their
   own personal technology into the workplace

  •  41% can bring and use their own tools independently
  •  26% can bring their tools if cleared by a manager or IT

•  One third of organizations require communications tools to be
   determined centrally – where everyone uses the same technology

•  41% experience richer relationships with colleagues, clients and
suppliers
•  60% agree video calling needs to be available for business and
personal calls
•  70% would like to do video calls with family members when travelling
There s a vast opportunity to
improve technology
•  42% agree the workplace is suffering from information overload
•  35% blame email for this overload
•  And 48% would like a simpler, unified approach to managing
   information
   •  Interestingly, this figure is higher if we look at just managers
      where 57% would like a simpler, unified approach

Survey - the Future of Work

  • 1. How real-time communications and video are transforming the workplace

Based on a Skype commissioned survey about “The Future of Work” •  Online study of 1,000 technology-empowered workers in the US •  500 end users •  500 decision-makers •  Businesses ranging in size from SOHO to large enterprise, across all industry sectors •  Survey took place from 24 November - 1 December 2010 •  Research was conducted by Incites, based on a sample provided by Research Now, one of the leading global online business and consumer panels

The workplace has radically shifted •  62% of firms have remote workers •  Of the firms that do, one third (34%) of employees work away from the office; at client, customer or partner premises; at home or in public spaces •  And these remote workers spend 40% of their time on average away from the office
  • 4. Not just remote, work is becoming more flexible as people work anytime and anywhere •  57% of firms allow flexible working hours, that fit with employees lives, rather than “standard office hours” •  Only 1 in 5 managers surveyed worried about the productivity of flexible workers 2010 © Skype. Increasingly workers are bringing new tools into the workplace •  In two thirds of organizations, workers can bring their own personal technology into the workplace •  41% can bring and use their own tools independently •  26% can bring their tools if cleared by a manager or IT •  One third of organizations require communications tools to be determined centrally – where everyone uses the same technology

Video is making communication more productive, collaborative and cost-effective Of workers who use video • 68% experience richer and more productive communication with colleagues, clients and suppliers • 65% collaborate better • 62% save time • 56% save money • 69% want video to be available on a range of devices and locations not just fixed systems

Video can also make work more human and help us balance our personal lives Of workers who use video •  41% experience richer relationships with colleagues, clients and suppliers •  60% agree video calling needs to be available for business and personal calls •  70% would like to do video calls with family members when travelling
