Survey Analysis
    By Alex Sexton
This graph emphasises the massive amount
of 15-19 year olds that I used for the
purpose of this questionnaire. One of the
main reasons for this is because of the fact
that 15-19 year olds are the kind of people
that I want to market my film to.
This amount of data from that age range
means that I can gain an accurate picture of
                        my audience.
With this data, I can also ascertain whether I
need to re-evaluate my audience criteria to
better fit the stylings of the film.
For the latter purpose, this question will tie in
with several later questions to determine if I
have, in fact, chosen my audience correctly,
or if I need to change and adapt.

how old are you?
Once again, this question is dominated by one
          gender. However, the dis-proportionate sizings
                between genre were not completely
                             intentional.
This slight increase of male answers compared
to female answers could, however, work to my
advantage. What I mean by this, is that society
operates by the stereotype that men will prefer
action/adventure films far more than their
female counterparts. So, marketing a film with
references to gang culture and alcoholism
could potentially be more relatable to men,
then it could be to women.

Are you male or female?
From this data, I can ascertain that the majority of
my audience are users that will watch more than 5
or more films a month. This could potentially
indicate that the type of audience that I am trying
to appeal to have a healthy interest in film,
meaning that they will actually have an interest in
film, instead of being a fair-weather fan, and only
watching the occasional film. The fair-weather fan
is not the kind of person that I want to appeal to.

Over a month, how much film would you watch?
From this data, I gathered that equal amounts of my
                                        audience
have heard of social realism, and others have not,
However, the two equal parts are between “Somewhat
Yes” and “No”. This means that 32% of my population
have never heard of social realism. So, with this, I had to
ask the question of it people were willing to diversify
their tastes, to what they’d normally watch. The answer
to that question is explained later in the presentation.

Have you ever heard of social realism?
This question involved the responder stating where they had
heard of the genre from. Some of the responses that I did get
back were correct; these were Media Studies students who had
also been studying the genre, or English students. However,
there were some responses that would incorrectly identify the
meaning of the genre, or incorrectly identify films that were
supposedly Social Realism’s. One response stated that “Forrest
Gump” is a Social Realism, of which it isn’t.
This showed that there was not a lot of awareness of the
genre, and where awareness was percieved, it was wrong.

IF YOU HAVE HEARD OF IT, WHERE FROM?
This question involved the responders defining social
realism from their own memory, preferably without the
aid of any other person or material. This question was
set in order to gauge if responders could actually
define the term “Social Realism”, and define it
                        correctly.

If you answered "No" to question 4, could you please try to define the
term "Social Realism"? This definition is preferably from memory, not
                            from a dictionary!
Some responses were vague, suggesting that
the responder didn’t actually know the
meaning, but still guessed, which was good for
  the questionnaire. The responses received
suggested that people knew vaguely what they
             were talking about.
Some of the responses are shown on the next slide.

If you answered "No" to question 4, could you please try to define the
term "Social Realism"? This definition is preferably from memory, not
                          from a dictionary!
“how realistic the film or soap is. They need this in a film in
order to make it realistic and relatable”
“Something to do with taking a situation and putting it into
                 context within society?”

“How real the subject relates to community issues”
“about a real situation in life/ representation of social situations”

“Social Realism is what happens in the real world”

“Socialising with people without being over the internet”
“I would associate this term with something to do with social
development that links into social issues like crime, education,
                      and the economy.”
The question was based on five responses; “Definitely
Yes”, “Maybe Yes,” “Don’t Know”, “Probably Not”, and
                  “Definitely Not”.
              “Definitely Yes” - 8.0%
               “Maybe Yes” - 44.0%
               “Don’t Know” - 16.0%
              “Probably Not” - 32.0%
              “Definitely Not” - 0.0%

WOULD A SHORT FILM BASED AROUNF THE THEMES
OF ALCOHOLISM, AND GANG CULTURE APPEAL TO
The dominant and leading response in this question
was “Maybe Yes”. This suggests to me that my
audience would watch my film. This also sections out
the parts of my audience that would not watch this
film. But with the majority of the audience wanting to
watch the film, this question was re-assuring to
                         myself.

WOULD A SHORT FILM BASED AROUNF THE THEMES
OF ALCOHOLISM, AND GANG CULTURE APPEAL TO
                     YOU?
With this question, the participants had to state if they had ever
seen a social realism, or what they believed to be a social
realism. If they had never seen one, or thought that they had
never seen one, they simply had to write “No”.
Out of 25 respondents, only 6 had stated that they had ever
seen a social realism film, with the other 19 saying that they
had never seen a Social Realism film. From this, I could
ascertain that my suggested audience were novices when it
came to the social realism film. From this, if it was a person’s
first time watching a social realism, the viewer may take from
the film that it is a true definition of Social Realism, which
means that I must try my hardest to accurately portray the
                                 genre.

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN AN EXAMPLE OF A SOCIAL
                  REALISM FILM?
The majority of responses that I received suggested that I
should use the “Dubstep” genre of music. The dubstep genre is
fairly intense; urbanised and electronic. However, with my film,
I wanted to present a contrast between the two scenes. This
contrast would not be able to be represented properly if, all the
way throughout the film, an intense soundtrack was playing
through. So, I took the audience’s responses as a warning, and
stayed within the electronic genre, but used a soundtrack that
was more subtle. This would effectively represent the mood of
the film; fast paced at parts, but still keeping an atmosphere
                 present when the pace subsides.

IF A SOUNDTRACK WAS INCLUDED, WHAT GENRE WOULD
              REPRESENT THE FILM BEST?
From this question, 19 participants said that they enjoyed
watching films that explored new methods, rather than staying
to traditional film-making techniques. So, this encouraged me to
try new techniques that I have never tried before, at the risk of
                           failing them.

DO YOU LIKE TO WATCH FILMS THAT EXPLORE NEW
AVENUES, OR DO YOU PREFER A SPECIFIC TYPE OF
                     CHARACTER?

Survey analysis

  • 1. Survey Analysis By Alex Sexton
  • 2. This graph emphasises the massive amount of 15-19 year olds that I used for the purpose of this questionnaire. One of the main reasons for this is because of the fact that 15-19 year olds are the kind of people that I want to market my film to. This amount of data from that age range means that I can gain an accurate picture of my audience. With this data, I can also ascertain whether I need to re-evaluate my audience criteria to better fit the stylings of the film. For the latter purpose, this question will tie in with several later questions to determine if I have, in fact, chosen my audience correctly, or if I need to change and adapt. how old are you?
  • 3. Once again, this question is dominated by one gender. However, the dis-proportionate sizings between genre were not completely intentional. This slight increase of male answers compared to female answers could, however, work to my advantage. What I mean by this, is that society operates by the stereotype that men will prefer action/adventure films far more than their female counterparts. So, marketing a film with references to gang culture and alcoholism could potentially be more relatable to men, then it could be to women. Are you male or female?
  • 4. From this data, I can ascertain that the majority of my audience are users that will watch more than 5 or more films a month. This could potentially indicate that the type of audience that I am trying to appeal to have a healthy interest in film, meaning that they will actually have an interest in film, instead of being a fair-weather fan, and only watching the occasional film. The fair-weather fan is not the kind of person that I want to appeal to. Over a month, how much film would you watch?
  • 5. From this data, I gathered that equal amounts of my audience have heard of social realism, and others have not, However, the two equal parts are between “Somewhat Yes” and “No”. This means that 32% of my population have never heard of social realism. So, with this, I had to ask the question of it people were willing to diversify their tastes, to what they’d normally watch. The answer to that question is explained later in the presentation. Have you ever heard of social realism?
  • 6. This question involved the responder stating where they had heard of the genre from. Some of the responses that I did get back were correct; these were Media Studies students who had also been studying the genre, or English students. However, there were some responses that would incorrectly identify the meaning of the genre, or incorrectly identify films that were supposedly Social Realism’s. One response stated that “Forrest Gump” is a Social Realism, of which it isn’t. This showed that there was not a lot of awareness of the genre, and where awareness was percieved, it was wrong. IF YOU HAVE HEARD OF IT, WHERE FROM?
  • 7. This question involved the responders defining social realism from their own memory, preferably without the aid of any other person or material. This question was set in order to gauge if responders could actually define the term “Social Realism”, and define it correctly. If you answered "No" to question 4, could you please try to define the term "Social Realism"? This definition is preferably from memory, not from a dictionary!
  • 8. Some responses were vague, suggesting that the responder didn’t actually know the meaning, but still guessed, which was good for the questionnaire. The responses received suggested that people knew vaguely what they were talking about. Some of the responses are shown on the next slide. If you answered "No" to question 4, could you please try to define the term "Social Realism"? This definition is preferably from memory, not from a dictionary!
  • 9. “how realistic the film or soap is. They need this in a film in order to make it realistic and relatable” “Something to do with taking a situation and putting it into context within society?” “How real the subject relates to community issues” “about a real situation in life/ representation of social situations” “Social Realism is what happens in the real world” “Socialising with people without being over the internet” “I would associate this term with something to do with social development that links into social issues like crime, education, and the economy.”
  • 10. The question was based on five responses; “Definitely Yes”, “Maybe Yes,” “Don’t Know”, “Probably Not”, and “Definitely Not”. “Definitely Yes” - 8.0% “Maybe Yes” - 44.0% “Don’t Know” - 16.0% “Probably Not” - 32.0% “Definitely Not” - 0.0% WOULD A SHORT FILM BASED AROUNF THE THEMES OF ALCOHOLISM, AND GANG CULTURE APPEAL TO
  • 11. The dominant and leading response in this question was “Maybe Yes”. This suggests to me that my audience would watch my film. This also sections out the parts of my audience that would not watch this film. But with the majority of the audience wanting to watch the film, this question was re-assuring to myself. WOULD A SHORT FILM BASED AROUNF THE THEMES OF ALCOHOLISM, AND GANG CULTURE APPEAL TO YOU?
  • 12. With this question, the participants had to state if they had ever seen a social realism, or what they believed to be a social realism. If they had never seen one, or thought that they had never seen one, they simply had to write “No”. Out of 25 respondents, only 6 had stated that they had ever seen a social realism film, with the other 19 saying that they had never seen a Social Realism film. From this, I could ascertain that my suggested audience were novices when it came to the social realism film. From this, if it was a person’s first time watching a social realism, the viewer may take from the film that it is a true definition of Social Realism, which means that I must try my hardest to accurately portray the genre. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN AN EXAMPLE OF A SOCIAL REALISM FILM?
  • 13. The majority of responses that I received suggested that I should use the “Dubstep” genre of music. The dubstep genre is fairly intense; urbanised and electronic. However, with my film, I wanted to present a contrast between the two scenes. This contrast would not be able to be represented properly if, all the way throughout the film, an intense soundtrack was playing through. So, I took the audience’s responses as a warning, and stayed within the electronic genre, but used a soundtrack that was more subtle. This would effectively represent the mood of the film; fast paced at parts, but still keeping an atmosphere present when the pace subsides. IF A SOUNDTRACK WAS INCLUDED, WHAT GENRE WOULD REPRESENT THE FILM BEST?
  • 14. From this question, 19 participants said that they enjoyed watching films that explored new methods, rather than staying to traditional film-making techniques. So, this encouraged me to try new techniques that I have never tried before, at the risk of failing them. DO YOU LIKE TO WATCH FILMS THAT EXPLORE NEW AVENUES, OR DO YOU PREFER A SPECIFIC TYPE OF CHARACTER?
