Community Ophthalmology focuses on promoting eye health at the community level. It takes a multidisciplinary approach involving treatment, rehabilitation, reducing eye diseases, and improving quality of life. The objectives are to treat and improve eye health for the entire community. Data is collected on eye problems and available services in the community. Diagnosis involves assessing community eye problems and needs. Programs are implemented based on the community needs assessment. The impact is evaluated by how the programs reduce blindness at the population level. Blindness has devastating impacts and affects individuals, families, and communities. Most blindness is in developing countries and is caused by conditions like cataract, glaucoma, and childhood blindness. Control strategies include prevention, early detection, and
Community ophthalmology focuses on preventive aspects of eye care directed at a population rather than curative care for individual patients. It aims to prevent blindness and visual impairment through primary eye care, epidemiological assessment of communities, and programs targeting major causes of blindness like cataract, refractive error, and childhood blindness. The WHO guidelines recommend conditions that primary eye care workers can treat, refer after initial treatment, and refer directly for treatment. Community ophthalmology is needed globally as 285 million people have vision impairment and 90% live in developing countries, where 80% of cases are preventable or treatable.
The document discusses refraction and vision correction by the eye. It covers how light is refracted by the cornea and lens to focus on the retina for clear vision. Common refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism are described along with their causes and corrections using lenses. Presbyopia and other age-related changes to the eye's refractive power are also summarized.
Primary level eye care services include screening programs, community awareness activities, and basic treatment. Services focus on refractive error correction, presbyopia management, and referring patients for further care. NATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR CONTROL OF BLINDNESSManoj Arockia
The National Programme for Control of Blindness in India was launched in 1976 with the goal of reducing blindness prevalence from 1.4% to 0.3%. Its key activities include expanding eye care services, establishing permanent infrastructure, and intensifying eye health education. It operates through a three-tier system at the peripheral, intermediate, and central levels. At each level it focuses on providing primary, secondary, and tertiary eye care services. It has also adopted strategic plans like 'Vision 2020: Right to Sight' to address specific blinding conditions and achieve its goal of eliminating avoidable blindness by 2020.
Subjective refraction techniques rely on the patient's response to determine the refractive correction that provides the best visual acuity. Determining the astigmatic correction is more complex than just the spherical error. Different techniques are used, including the cross-cylinder method and clock dial method. For the cross-cylinder method, the axis is refined first followed by the cylinder power to get the best visual acuity. For children, cycloplegic refraction is important and the full refractive error should typically be corrected, though sometimes undercorrection may be used initially.
This study evaluated the use of gentamicin microspheres to locally deliver antibiotics and reduce postoperative spinal implant infections in rabbits. In the first phase, various bacterial doses were tested in rabbits to determine a dose that resulted in a 70% surgical site infection rate. This established dose (106 CFU of Staphylococcus aureus) was then used in the second phase where sites received either gentamicin microspheres or a control treatment. Results showed that the gentamicin microspheres significantly reduced both the surgical site infection rate and implant-associated infection rate compared to the control sites. Bacterial counts were also lower in infected sites that received the gentamicin treatment, though this difference was not statistically significant. This suggests
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive function. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms for those who already suffer from conditions like depression and anxiety.
The document discusses the results of a study on the impact of climate change on coffee production. Researchers found that suitable land for coffee production could decline by up to 50% by 2050 due to rising temperatures and changing rain patterns associated with climate change. Arabica coffee was found to be especially threatened, as its growing regions may shrink by 88% under a business-as-usual scenario of increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The study concludes that climate change poses a severe risk to the coffee economy worldwide.
