The document summarizes the effects of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. It describes how the city of Sendai was devastated by the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Survivors were left homeless and without access to food or basic necessities. The document urges readers to help support relief efforts through donations of money, supplies, or volunteer work to help the thousands of people affected by the disaster. It provides details on donation drives being conducted by K. International School Tokyo to deliver aid to victims in Japan.
This document provides an overview of a teaching workshop on using Google Apps to facilitate collaboration and engage students. The syllabus outlines that participants will learn how to create presentations and documents, embed content, and collaborate using Google Apps. As a homework assignment, participants are asked to create a presentation on their teaching assignment and curriculum using Google Apps features. An optional additional project involves designing a collaborative student activity using Google Apps and inviting the instructor to view it. The document notes that participants can earn professional development credits by attending workshops and completing assignments.

Bella T. Wong Bulletin #13
Superintendent of Schools December 3, 2010
The Superintendent’s Bulletin is posted weekly on Fridays on our website. It provides timely, relevant
information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development,
grant awards, and School Committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please
read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news.
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving break. Not having to travel this year made the break seem longer and
more relaxed even though we hosted 18 at dinner. And yes, the “Butterball” is now my “go to” turkey for
dinners to come. Over the break we had time to catch a soccer game, see the movie Tangled, and a musical
called Suessical. This morning I tossed out the last of the left over mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, so I
guess it is time to move on.
Thanks to Becky McFall and Jennine Shulkin for helping us arrange for Dr. Douglas Reeves’ address on the
Professional Day. I enjoyed many parts of his pre- and post- breakfast presentations and continue to reflect on
his comments about effort, expectations, assessment and impact. In the course of our work we may touch
upon many of the ideas he spoke of already – but for me , he also brought home the importance of efficacy -
Making sure what we do every day is making a difference and how we can know that is happening.
As always, I strive to keep teaching and learning at the forefront of our concerns. To support that effort I, with
the Administrative team, work to garner the resources to support your work in the classrooms. This team has
already been working hard on building next year’s budgets and projects to create space to meet enrollment
needs.
The FY12 Capital Budget that includes monies for furniture, computers, and other instructional equipment has
been approved by the School Committee and presented to the Advisory Committee. It awaits final approval at
the Annual Town Meeting in the spring. This budget maintains our replacement cycle for technology but not for
furniture and equipment. It goes without saying that funding for new technology is, therefore, limited. On a
positive note, I know that our PTOs and WEF are already working on how to support us in this area. Any
urgent facilities issues are being addressed in the current year either by reallocation of the current year’s funds
or through the Town-wide Facilities Reserve Account. This includes improvement to the external drainage
system at the Schofield School. In this manner, I feel we can manage our capital needs through FY12.
However, we also forecast broader needs beginning in FY13 to address existing elementary modular
classrooms, remaining infrastructure work at the Middle School and repair of the original slate roof at the
Sprague School.
This Monday any school staff is invited to hear my presentation of the Superintendent’s recommended FY12
operating budget. I have been asked by the School Committee to present a level service budget including
enrollment adjustments, a budget that meets the Advisory guideline of 2.5 percent, and a list of proposed
advancements to program. The presentation will take place at 3:30 in room 204 at the Middle School. I will
give the same presentation to School Committee Tuesday evening at Town Hall at 7:30 pm. Since this is a
public meeting, you may attend this meeting as well.
2. A Special Town Meeting is also being held Monday evening at the Middle School auditorium beginning at
7:30 pm. An important article for the schools is a project to renovate the current lecture halls at the Middle
School into additional classrooms, including a science lab. This additional classroom space is needed to help
meet the anticipated enrollment needs at the Middle School through the next several years in order to maintain
current class size guidelines. The amount being requested out of the Town’s free cash is $1.6 million. The
School Committee and administrators, as well as many Town board members and staff, have worked hard
over the last 18 months to prepare this important project for a Town Meeting vote. The public is welcome to
attend this as well.

Students are more likely to learn in schools that are safe and supportive. However, studies consistently show
that name-calling, bias, bullying, and harassment at school are on the rise. Safety is certainly an issue for
students who are seen as different because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This course is
designed for people who are not gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, but who are interested in addressing
bias around issues of sexual orientation and gender identity of young people.
