SUNLOWS TRIES TO MAKE THE WHOLE SUBJECT OF RESEARCH USER-FRIENDLY
Our team has developed a model of maintenance to understand the
factors that can contribute to the perpetuation of Anorexia Nervosa
(AN). One element of this model is a pathological cycle that can
develop within families. For example, in response to the
manifestations of AN in the sufferer, approximately 50% of carers
(who are usually the parents) exhibit measurable anxiety and
depression, to a degree which constitutes clinical levels of mental
illness. In turn, the carers’ own symptoms impinge upon the AN
sufferer, the characteristic behaviour patterns of AN are exacerbated
and the negative cycle persists. Experienced Carers Helping Others
(ECHO) is a guided self-help skills training intervention developed to
address carers’ unmet needs, ameliorate their distress, and
provide skills training to alter key maintaining factors. Two RCT’s are
in progress testing the intervention, one with carers of adult
inpatients and the other with carers of adolescent outpatients.

2. Service users’ experiences of recovery
under the 2008 Care Programme
Approach
This study was set up to explore how
effective service users find the 2008 Care
Programme Approach
in promoting recovery as they
understand it, to put forward their views
and recommendations
about the recovery role of the Approach
as well as to produce a checklist of good
practice for mental health professionals
involved in this Approach. Dorothy
Gould will present the results of the
study.

3. START is a major research study spread across 9
areas in the UK investigating a form of
intervention for young people and their
families who are experiencing difficulties at
home, at school and ometimes with the law.
This way of helping young people and their
families is new to the UK. The research team
aim to compare Multisystemic Therapy (MST)
with other services that are currently offered to
young people and their families who are
considered to be at ‘high risk’ of requiring
out-of-home care such as fostering, social care
or custody if associated with antisocial
behaviour such as conviction as a young
offender.
