“We support research across
South London and the South East
    building on knowledge to
 improve patient care and
      mental health services”
The Mental Health Research Network is part of the NIHR
Clinical Research Network, which supports research
to make patients, and the NHS, better.
►About the MHRN

The Mental Health Research Network is part of the National
Institute for Health Research and our mission is to help make
research about mental health happen within the NHS in
England.

We work with everyone who needs to be involved in research
projects – researchers, mental health professionals, people with
experience of mental health problems, their families, and research
and development staff based in NHS trusts. We support studies
that are based within mental health services, within social care
services and within primary care services.

We support randomised controlled trials, service evaluations,
qualitative studies, epidemiological research, genetic research and
e-science studies. We support multi-centre and multi-site projects
as well as small single-site pilot studies.
We support both publicly-funded research studies and projects
that are sponsored by industry.
►Benefits of using the MHRN

If you run a project on the MHRN you can:
■ Obtain assistance with contractual and financial arrangements
■ Obtain advice and support for obtaining COREC approval, R&D
approvals and trust honorary contracts
■ Have access to Clinical Studies Officers who will
ensure the streamlined recruitment of participants
■ Gain access to a secure web-based data entry system - can enter
study data on to a central database from workstations located
around the country
■ Benefit from the fact that recruitment objectives will be
monitored closely throughout project
■ Obtain assistance with publicity
►About the South London & South East Hub

The South London & South East  Hub supports a large number
of studies across six Mental Health Trusts  namely South London
& Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, South West London and St.
Georges Mental Health NHS Trust, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust,
Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Surrey and Boarders
Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Kent and Medway
Partnership and Social Care Trust.

While the majority of our projects are running within
secondary care (both in and out-patients), we also support
primary and social care studies. A growing part of our work
involves working with industry on pharmaceutical trials.
Activities we support range from scoping exercises to
questionnaire based studies, up to multicenter RCT’s.

Areas of research include; adult mental health, children and
adolescents, developmental disorders and addictions, and fit
within the framework of the Clinical Academic Groups created
by King’s Health Partners.

The involvement of service users and carers in research is an
important aim in the work of the MHRN.
There are also opportunities within the hub for service users and
                                                  carers to
                                                  attend training
                                                  courses, focus
                                                  groups and get
                                                  involved with
                                                  the hub
                                                  management
                                                  committee as
                                                  well as
                                                  becoming a
                                                  member of the
                                                  FAST-R service.

South London Mental Health Research Hub

  • 1. An Introduction to the SOUTH LONDON & SOUTH EAST HUB www.mhrn.info slsehub@kcl.ac.uk - 020 7848 5015 “We support research across South London and the South East building on knowledge to improve patient care and mental health services” The Mental Health Research Network is part of the NIHR Clinical Research Network, which supports research to make patients, and the NHS, better.
  • 2. ►About the MHRN The Mental Health Research Network is part of the National Institute for Health Research and our mission is to help make research about mental health happen within the NHS in England. We work with everyone who needs to be involved in research projects – researchers, mental health professionals, people with experience of mental health problems, their families, and research and development staff based in NHS trusts. We support studies that are based within mental health services, within social care services and within primary care services. We support randomised controlled trials, service evaluations, qualitative studies, epidemiological research, genetic research and e-science studies. We support multi-centre and multi-site projects as well as small single-site pilot studies. We support both publicly-funded research studies and projects that are sponsored by industry. ►Benefits of using the MHRN If you run a project on the MHRN you can: ■ Obtain assistance with contractual and financial arrangements ■ Obtain advice and support for obtaining COREC approval, R&D approvals and trust honorary contracts ■ Have access to Clinical Studies Officers who will ensure the streamlined recruitment of participants ■ Gain access to a secure web-based data entry system - can enter study data on to a central database from workstations located around the country ■ Benefit from the fact that recruitment objectives will be monitored closely throughout project ■ Obtain assistance with publicity
  • 3. ►About the South London & South East Hub The South London & South East  Hub supports a large number of studies across six Mental Health Trusts  namely South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, South West London and St. Georges Mental Health NHS Trust, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Surrey and Boarders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Kent and Medway Partnership and Social Care Trust. While the majority of our projects are running within secondary care (both in and out-patients), we also support primary and social care studies. A growing part of our work involves working with industry on pharmaceutical trials. Activities we support range from scoping exercises to questionnaire based studies, up to multicenter RCT’s. Areas of research include; adult mental health, children and adolescents, developmental disorders and addictions, and fit within the framework of the Clinical Academic Groups created by King’s Health Partners. The involvement of service users and carers in research is an important aim in the work of the MHRN. There are also opportunities within the hub for service users and carers to attend training courses, focus groups and get involved with the hub management committee as well as becoming a member of the FAST-R service.
