A new strain of giant miscanthus grass called Freedom Giant Miscanthus has been developed by Mississippi State University and licensed by SunBelt Biofuels for commercialization. This grass is a viable alternative to corn and switchgrass for biofuel production. It takes only one year to mature compared to 20 years for trees. Freedom Giant Miscanthus is also very profitable for farmers, stimulating rural economies, and can produce over 3,000 gallons of fuel per acre. If widely planted, it could help make states like Georgia energy independent and lessen the country's dependence on foreign oil.

Setting the Stage
Palm oil is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on Earth. Referred to as the “Miracle Crop” (Wan, 2017) it can be found in seventy-one percent of most supermarket food products like pizza and doughnuts, 24 percent of cosmetic products like lipstick and makeup, and five percent for energy uses like heating fuel (Deutsch bank, 2015). Known as a super food, the demand for palm oil is already high, and it is expected to triple by 2050 (Deutsch Bank (db), 2015).
Currently Malaysia, Indonesia and India produce 50 of the 56 million tons needed to meet international consumer demand. While the production of Palm Oil promotes economic development badly needed in these countries, it does not come without serious environmental and social consequences (Deutsch Bank(db), 2015).
One prominent side effect of the deforestation caused by the rapid growth of palm oil production is the reduction of the Orangutan population. It is estimated that over fifty thousand Orangutans died because of palm oil production in the last 20 years. It is also estimated that 2,000- 3,000 die every year (Orangutan. n.d.). The guestimates by experts suggest that in the next 30-50 years those found in the wild will be extinct. Environmentalists are attempting to stave off the extinction by creating refuges on nearby islands and transporting the remaining Orangutans from Borneo (where most Orangutans have traditionally lived) to the sanctuaries (Emont, 2017).
Orangutan’s are not the only victims of the increased number of palm oil plantations, but humans also suffer from the side effects. A study estimated that 91,600 people in Indonesia, 6,500 in Malaysia and 2,200 in Singapore may have died prematurely because of exposure to fine particle pollution from burning forests (France-Presse, 2016).
The large destruction of rain forests by plantation owners and its effect on global climate is also a serious problem brought about by palm oil production. Deforestation is a significant contributor to climate change; when the forests are lost, carbon is released into the atmosphere, causing the climate to heat up.

Setting the Stage
Palm oil is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on Earth. Referred to as the “Miracle Crop” (Wan, 2017) it can be found in seventy-one percent of most supermarket food products like pizza and doughnuts, 24 percent of cosmetic products like lipstick and makeup, and five percent for energy uses like heating fuel (Deutsch bank, 2015). Known as a super food, the demand for palm oil is already high, and it is expected to triple by 2050 (Deutsch Bank (db), 2015).
Currently Malaysia, Indonesia and India produce 50 of the 56 million tons needed to meet international consumer demand. While the production of Palm Oil promotes economic development badly needed in these countries, it does not come without serious environmental and social consequences (Deutsch Bank(db), 2015).
One prominent side effect of the deforestation caused by the rapid growth of palm oil production is the reduction of the Orangutan population. It is estimated that over fifty thousand Orangutans died because of palm oil production in the last 20 years. It is also estimated that 2,000- 3,000 die every year (Orangutan. n.d.). The guestimates by experts suggest that in the next 30-50 years those found in the wild will be extinct. Environmentalists are attempting to stave off the extinction by creating refuges on nearby islands and transporting the remaining Orangutans from Borneo (where most Orangutans have traditionally lived) to the sanctuaries (Emont, 2017).
Orangutan’s are not the only victims of the increased number of palm oil plantations, but humans also suffer from the side effects. A study estimated that 91,600 people in Indonesia, 6,500 in Malaysia and 2,200 in Singapore may have died prematurely because of exposure to fine particle pollution from burning forests (France-Presse, 2016).
The large destruction of rain forests by plantation owners and its effect on global climate is also a serious problem brought about by palm oil production. Deforestation is a significant contributor to climate change; when the forests are lost, carbon is released into the atmosphere, causing the climate to heat up.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

After 12 years of thorough research, being done at the university shows that Freedom Giant Miscanthus grass is a viable alternative to other biofuel sources, like corn and switchgrass and pine treestimber. The implications of this announcement are significant. Finding innovative, yet immediately workable, solutions in biofuels lessens US dependence on foreign oil and gas. Freedom Giant Miscanthus is a product that begins immediately to move the US away from foreign energy dependence. Freedom Giant Miscanthus takes only one year to replace, as opposed to trees, which take 20 years to replace due to the growing cycle. Freedom Giant Miscanthus also promises to stimulate rural economies, as it takes less land, costs less to grow, and is very profitable for farmers. For example, in the state of Georgia farms that grow Freedom Giant Miscanthus will see income rise more than $2 billion above crops that are grown currently. Freedom Giant Miscanthus produces up toover 3,000 gallons of tank-ready fuelethanol per acre. According to Phillip Jennings, CEO of SunBelt Biofuels, the state of Georgia needs to plant 2.4 million acres of Freedom Giant Miscanthus to become energy independent. "In Georgia, we can take 10 percent of our forest commercial timber land or 24 percent of our crop land, and we would be where we need to be to sustain just this one state," said Mr. Jennings. It is branded as "Freedom Giant Miscanthus" to denote its ability to free the US from dependency on foreign oil. 4. Freedom Giant Miscanthus is a non-food biomass. SunBelt Biofuels, headquartered in Soperton, Georgia, is an innovator in the quest to bring workable solutions for alternative fuels to market and leading the Southeast U.S. into the American consumer fuel market.
