eventually expanded its services to include custom website design, copywriting,
pay-per-click advertising, video production, call tracking and more. It has also

which is responsible for managing our client’s online social media presence.
“We encourage our clients to participate in the social networking forums. These
sites may not generate immediate business, but participating in social
networking will allow our clients to more effectively guard their reputations, and
it helps in search engine optimization efforts.”1

Social Media Marketing:
It’s no denying that social media continues to grow, and before interviewing for
this position I knew that I wanted to explore social media marketing. This is why
it is becoming increasingly important for brand to tap into social media and take
advantage of what it has to offer. According to Forbes “Every opportunity you
have to syndicate your content and increase your visibility is valuable. Your
social media networks are just new channels for your brand’s voice and content.
This is important because it simultaneously makes you easier and more
accessible for new customers, and makes you more familiar and recognizable
for existing customers.”
I am both an advertising and communication major and I enjoy being able to use
aspects from both degrees. I found social media marketing is a good place to do
this. For me advertising is all about crafting a brand; communication skills let you
look at the different relationships consumers have with your brand.
Communication also allows you to construct your brand and brand
message. As technology and the Internet continues to develop and update it
only makes sense to incorporate social media into the marketing mix. In an
article titled “Social Media: The new hybrid element of the promotion mix,” W.
Glynn Mangold and David J. Faulds state, “By including social media in the
promotion mix, these new communication formats are given a home in standard
marketing management practices and theories. This new-found home for social
media provides managers with a better understanding of social media and a
framework for incorporating it into their marketing strategies, thus more
effectively communicating with their target markets.”

Social media is becoming an important and unique place for brands to
communicate and interact with their “fans.” I enjoy being able to help craft those
messages and interact with different people around the world. Social media
marketing is beneficial to any brand; it offers a relatively cheap (if not free) way
to gain exposure. The true value of social media continues to increase; it allows
your company to be authentic and transparent with your consumers. “In an era
of greater transparency and authenticity, social media is rapidly delivering a new
standard of interacting more person to person, even if it’s just one person in your
company who is chosen to be the active “face” in that realm. If you update a blog
regularly, you can auto update both Facebook and Twitter from your blog posts,
so it doen’t have to take a bunch of time. Don Crowther, social media guru, says
a highly effective social media strategy can take just 20 minutes a day.”

Social Media Management
I was responsible for researching, planning, crafting, and scheduling content for
about 20 social media clients. Our clients have a couple different options when
signing up for social media management. We offer a silver, gold, and platinum
package which each features a different number of outlets we will manage for
them. The majority of our clients are gold social clients, meaning we manage
their Facebook, Twitter, and Google plus page. The gold package also includes
eight posts a month to these outlets. To find good content I would research new
articles that pertained for that specific syndication. For example if I was working
on content planning for one of our clients that is a dentist. I would search
different sites including Google, Yahoo Health, Huffington Post, etc. for articles
that pertained to oral health, new advances in dentistry, or tips for a better smile.

We also require all clients that sign up for social media to fill out a questioner.
Here we learn what kinds of things our clients are into and what they want their
social outlets to portray. Once I find a mix of articles, we would have a Google
document set up for our team and we would add the article to it. This way we
could keep track of everything we are posting to these pages, and we do not
post the same thing twice. With each article I found I was responsible for crafting
a short blurb of an introduction to the article. By posting these articles are main
goal was to spark interest and engagement. We wanted people to share our
links, and leave likes or comments. I would do this on a weekly basis to make
sure all of the posts got done each month. Below are some screen shots of
examples for one of our dental clients:
Overall this went really well, I saw some good engagement from audiences. It is
cool because we can see measurable results. Looking at analytics it is
interesting to see what your reach is and how many impressions you can make. I
would admit however that there were a couple times I did mess up. Although for
the most part I enjoy planning content, sometimes it was boring or I was in a
rush. There was one week that I didn’t double-check the content and blurb I
wrote and I had a typo. This got me in a little bit of trouble because when to
content was published it had a typo in the headline. This looked unprofessional
for our client.
6. Summer 2015
I immediately fixed it, but it is one of the number one rules is to triple check
everything before you post it. This is something I definitely could have done
better because it was just a slip up on my part. I felt awful and embarrassed, but
it was definitely a learning opportunity.
Evergreen Images
I was given the opportunity to take the lead on creating evergreen promotional
images. Evergreen content is content that will always be relevant to your brand
and your audience; the topic doesn’t have to change over time. I created 3-10
images using a site called Canva. These posts will continue to stay relevant and
can be scheduled a few times through out every month. These images will link
back to the client’s website. The goal of these images is to help get the attention
of our audience members and track how many web conversions we can get. I
think these will be beneficial for our clients to have, and they serve as a onetime
creation. I loved being able to take the lead on this project and exercise my
creative muscle to create all these images that will continue to be used for the
next six months to a year. It is very rewarding to spend a good amount of time
making something and then seeing the final product. Below are a couple of the
images I created. The creation aspect went well, but all of the images are
scheduled to start going out next month and continue until December.

Continued Learning
Social Media is always changing. It lives on the Internet, which seems to have a
new update on some aspect every week. Because of this type of medium, you
have to be able to ebb and flow with the updates. My company really
supports continued learning, so we can keep up with the latest in greatest that
social media has to offer. The social media department would have weekly
meetings to all watch videos on different aspects of social media and social
media marketing. I appreciated this because I was exposed to a lot of different
tips of the trade. I also gained knowledge and skills that I can put on a resume.
Some of the videos also put into perspective how much ‘power’ the social media
manager has. If we post something inappropriate on one of our client’s page, we
could potentially ruin their reputation and company as a whole. These weekly
meetings are a nice reminder of what things we are doing well and what new
things we can incorporate. These meetings were also great time building
opportunities and a time for our team to work closely together. It was interesting
to see the team interaction, we all got along but it was cool to see what sort of
relationships was built. After every video we talked about the videos, our
opinions, and how we could include some of these techniques in our clients’
social media strategies. I think setting up a continued learning plan is beneficial
to both the company and it’s employees. It encourages collaboration and
innovation, two things that you need if you want your company to succeed.
Conclusion:
The social media team had great insight and advice on how to stay up to date
on all things social media marketing. They invested their time in me and my
skills. Every week it seemed like there was either a video or article shared with
me that provided valuable information on new trends or tips for social media
management.

I also learned how to create and manage social media advertising campaigns,
which is something I really wanted to learn. Social media is a field that seems to
change or update on a daily basis and the social media team continually tries to
stay up to date and learn about the latest and greatest.
By working as the social media intern I have gained valuable knowledge and
skills regarding social media, marketing, and communication. This experience
was more than I could have expected and it allowed me to use the knowledge
I’ve acquired from the last three years as a student. I have been able to
continue to explore different aspects of social media and get hands on
experience in a field I want to pursue after graduation. Working at Page 1
Solutions has prepared me for my senior year and after graduation. This
experience has instilled in me a confidence for the field of social media
marketing.
