This document summarizes the proceedings of a diocesan synod meeting focused on embracing God's future. It includes reports from various committees and working groups, addresses on key topics like PWRDF and outreach, and motions for endorsement of plans and initiatives. The main themes are ongoing work to support community ministries, address homelessness and affordable housing, and engage parishioners in living out God's mission in the world.
The passage discusses how the earliest Christians lived communally, sharing possessions and distributing resources to those in need. While this exact model may not be practical, it prompts reconsidering what we own individually versus what we hold in common. The author reflects that in reality, we do hold all things in common as interconnected neighbors, with a shared responsibility to care for resources that belong to all.

Our Team Memorandum of
Understanding
Hurricane Matthew
During Hurricane Matthew our Chaplains were stationed around the
Lowcountry with emergency personnel. Chaplains Rob Dewey, Rich
Robinson, Shane Bowers, Karey Heyward, Spike Coleman, Angela Raney,
Dennis McGowan, Bill Youngblood, Rod Rutledge, and Judith Ewing all
assisted by spending time with First Responders.
We invited Chaplains from the International Conference of Police Chaplains
to assist in our efforts the week following the storm. We had 5 visiting
Chaplains from the southeast. These Chaplains rode with local law
enforcement officers, EMS and firemen. Ride-alongs are vital to our
mission to be a "Ministry of Presence" to our First Responders.
Chaplain Rob Dewey stated, “we are appreciative of our instate chaplain
coordinator, David DeDonato, from Lexington SC, for organizing this
response. It was wonderful to have the needed support to our team during
this time!”
On September 21, 2016, the 628th Air Base Wing Chaplain Corps and the
Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
for Mutual Spiritual Support. This MOU serves as a formal document of a
long-standing relationship between our two agencies. We are thankful for
the mutual aid we can provide one another during times of crisis such as
mass causality disasters and base emergencies.
The signing ceremony was hosted at Charleston Joint Base in the Chapel.
The Rev. Rob Dewey, Senior Chaplain to the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy, Lt.
Col. Walker Bean, Joint Base Senior Chaplain, and Colonel Robert Lyman,
Commander of the 628th Air Base Wing signed the official document.
The ceremony was attended
by Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy staff
and volunteers, local law
enforcement personnel, military
chaplains, and representatives
from Joint Base Charleston.

3. Chaplain Spotlight: Karey Heyward
Karey Heyward joined the Chaplaincy as a volunteer chaplain in October of
2015. He had spoken to Charleston County Sheriff’s Office deputies about
ways to help the community. Chaplain Heyward graduated from Holmes
Bible College in Greenville with a degree in Pastoral Ministry and serves as
the pastor of Eternity Ministries, a new church plant in North Charleston.
Chaplain Heyward recently ran into someone he had ministered to after they
lost their father to suicide. The survivor thanked him for his comforting
words and listening ear the night he arrived on scene. He said seeing the
survivor smiling again and moving forward with their life makes this
ministry so valuable and rewarding to him.
Chaplain Rich Robinson stated, “Chaplain Heyward is an asset to the
Chaplaincy team and is a shinning light to those in need during times
of crisis.”
4. The PCI I and PCI II combined course
is being sponsored by the Chaplaincy
and the City of North Charleston.
The course was co-authored by the
Rev. Rob Dewey shortly before the
September 11th terrorist attacks.
The course addresses how to assist
individuals or communities during a
time of crisis, and it examines the
impact that crisis situations have upon
people, whether it is a psychological
and/or spiritual impact. Participants
will receive continuing education
credit from the University of
Maryland.

Once a month our volunteers and staff meet over breakfast for continuing
education, training, and fellowship. Each month we invite a speaker to
offer a presentation that will help our chaplains better serve the
Lowcountry population.
Previous speakers include police, fire, and EMS chiefs, elected officials
and mental health professionals. This year our speakers have included Dr.
Barbara Boatwright, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with Life Resources,
Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen, Charleston County EMS director
David Abrams, DEA resident in Charge of South Carolina Jason Sandoval.
Following the speaker, our staff chaplains address various training needs
for our volunteer chaplains. Our chaplains are trained in subjects such as
hostage negotiations, crime scene safety, and religious sensitivity

Welcome Chaplains Shane and Robbie (Cover Photo)
Center for Jewish LifeThank You!
We are excited to announce Shane Bowers and Pastor Robbie Robinson have joined the Chaplaincy staff. This is
thanks to an anonymous individual donation and a grant from the Roper St. Francis Physicians Endowment Fund.
Shane Bowers comes to Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy from a medical background.
He worked in the ER at Greenville Hospital for eight years as a trauma/ER nurse
tech. It was through this experience he became interested in chaplaincy
ministry. He attended North Greenville University earning a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Youth Ministry. He then continued his ministerial training at the
Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest North Carolina where he earned an
Master’s of Divinity in Christian Ministry. In 2011, he and his wife, Ashley,
moved to Charleston where he completed four units of CPE at Roper St. Francis
Hospital. He worked as a hospice chaplain for three and a half years before
joining the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy in March of 2016.
Robbie Robinson was ordained in 1974 at Greater New Jerusalem Missionary
Baptist Church in Las Vegas, Nevada. He pastored churches in Mildenhall and
Lakenheath, England before God led him to Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist
Church in North Charleston; where he pastored as the Senior Pastor from 1990
to 2012. He is a decorated veteran of the United States Air Force. He had an
outstanding military career which spanned over thirty-one years and was marked
with excellence. During his military career, he received the Bronze Star,
Meritorius Medals, Air Medals and several others. He holds a Master’s Degree
in Public Administration from Troy State University and a Bachelors of
Divinity in Pastoral Counseling from University of Maine.
The Chaplaincy attended the opening of the
Chabad of Charleston & the Lowcountry in
October. We are so proud of our own

Holiday Giving!
Would you or your business consider an end of year
gift to the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy? The
Chaplaincy relies solely on the donations of
individuals, congregations, corporations, local
government donations, and foundation gifts. As a
501(C)3 your gift to the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy is
tax deductible and if you make a gift that is post-
marked by December 31, 2016 we will issue a tax
receipt in January for your records.
Are you stumped on what to give someone for the
holidays? Consider a donation to the Coastal Crisis
Chaplaincy in their honor! All you have to do is send
us their name and address with your donation and
we will send an acknowledgment letter along with
information on the Chaplaincy. You may also make
honorarium and memorial contributions online at
CoastalCrisisChaplain.org/Donate. Their name
along with yours will be published in the next
newsletter. Please contact Gloria if you have any
questions on memorial and honorarium giving.

Thank you to Charleston Crab House Owner and
previous Chaplaincy board member Mr. John Keener
for his continued support of our ministry.
We would like to thank the ladies of the Grace Church
Cathedral Tea Room for their continued support of
our work in the community. For over 10 years this
wonderful group has provided financial support and
prayers for the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy. These
ladies work hard to put on the Tea Room each year
which raised money for local charities. We are proud
to stand with 28 other great organizations who help
make Charleston a better place!
Thank You Call Experts
We are so thankful for the
continued support of Call
Experts. When a First
Responder requests a
Chaplain to be called to a scene, we have a 24 hour hotline
serviced by Call Experts that will notify the ‘on call’
Chaplain of the situation. This service is invaluable to the
ministry of the Chaplaincy and helps us provide a calming,
trusted “Ministry of Presence during times of need.”
Thank you to Mike Lebowitz and his team for their
amazing service and dedication to the community!
