Mental health stigma can be divided into two distinct types: social stigma is characterized by prejudicial attitudes and discriminating behaviour directed towards individuals with mental health problems as a result of the psychiatric label they have been given. In contrast, perceived stigma or self-stigma is the internalizing by the mental health sufferer of their perceptions of discrimination (Link, Cullen, Struening & Shrout, 1989), and perceived stigma can significantly affect feelings of shame and lead to poorer treatment outcomes (Perlick, Rosenheck, Clarkin, Sirey et al., 2001).

Much has been said and written about suicide and its prevalence among the youth, especially in today’s world, when the average tolerance level of not only the youngsters but also the adults has gone down considerably. There are cases in the paper reporting suicide by eleven year olds; suicide by young men or women because their relationship didn’t work out or because they got less marks than expected. The question we have to ask is that can we do anything about it? And the answer is a big YES. Of course, we can.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15- to 24-year-olds.
There are more than 1,000 suicides on college campuses per year.
The main reason of having suicidal thoughts is to lose hope. It’s the time when
dying feels easier option than continuing living in this world.

intentionally causing one's own death.

• Keep them safe by staying around and removing any means of committing
suicide, such as knives, where possible.
• Listen to them and be there for them.
• Encourage them to call a helpline or contact someone they might turn to
for support, such as a friend, family member, or spiritual mentor.
• Follow up with them after the crisis has passed, as this appears to reduce
the risk of a recurrence.
8. AWARENESS OF MENTAL
ILLNESS IN INDIA
“Even in today’s day and age – 2021, the scenario surrounding mental health in
India has not changed much. People still use terms like paagal, mental hai kya, so
casually. People don’t understand that how these words can actually affect a
depressed or mentally ill person. In most cases a person commits suicide because he
doesn’t have anyone to talk about these things. In India mental illness isn’t even
considered a actual problem in most houses, most of the times the behavior caused by
a person due to such illnesses is just considered the nature of that person or
sometimes his/her fault. The one of the main reason of suicides among teens is the
current education system in India which has basically set of some rules to be a good
human being and if you are not going according to those rules you are tagged as bad
student/ human/ a disappointment to your parents and all of these situations created
by education system results in the mental illnesses in some children's at such young
ages and sometimes lead him/her to commit such extreme act as suicide and other
reason for some teens can be high expectations of their parents from them. Awareness
for mental health in India is slowly increasing but it’s still very low level.
9. “In my view, suicide is not really a wish for life to end.’
What is it then?’
It is the only way a powerless person can find to
make everybody else look away from his shame.
The wish is not to die, but to hide.”
- Orsan Scott Card, Ender’s Shadow
10. First, break the stigma around mental health. Train and sensitize
the community/society. People need to be educated about mental
diseases.
There should be various organisation to educate people about mental
illnesses. Social health activist ( ASHA ) by the ministry of health
and family welfare by government of India is one of the example of
such organisation.
Campaigns like Swachh Mansikta Abhiyan teaches about mental
health and such campaigns should be held in schools and colleges to
teach and talk about mental health to students.
11. Suicidal Thoughts does not always lead to committing suicide but it
effects one’s mental health in a very bad way. People between age 18
– 24 are tend to be more depressed among adults of age 26. Suicide
ideation means thinking, planning or considering to suicide. There
are many reasons by which a person can suffer from mental illness
and symptoms to look in a person and ways to prevent a person from
increasing the risk . Awareness of mental diseases in India is not very
good and one of the main reason for these mental illnesses in schools
and college students is the current education system of India.
There are various ways to make people aware about mental illnesses
and one of them could be organising campaigns to teach about mental
illnesses and it’s effect in adults and children's.
