Sucralose is an artificial sweetener that is 600 times sweeter than sugar but contains no calories. It was discovered in 1976 by researchers in the UK. Sucralose is made by replacing parts of sugar molecules with chlorine atoms. Numerous safety studies have found sucralose does not affect blood sugar or insulin levels and passes through the body undigested. Sucralose can provide a sweet taste without calories and thus may have a role in weight management.
