fat intake, replacing
carbohydrates in
the diet with fats. A
dramatic reduction in
carbs puts the body into
a state of ketosis, which
is when the body burns fat for energy,
rather than carbs.
When the body is in a state of ketosis,
the liver turns fat into ketones, which
supply energy for the brain – with the
reduction in carbohydrates causing
significant reductions in blood sugar
and insulin levels. A ketogenic diet
includes high-fat meats, fish, nuts,
oils, low-carb vegetables and high-fat
dairy produce, such as cheese.
Foods that are high in carbohydrates
should be eliminated, which includes
pasta, rice, bread and baked goods, as
well as legumes, root vegetables, high-
starch vegetables such as potatoes
and most fruits.
