The McNeese State University Student Union Board had a successful showing at the APCA Regional Conference in Houston, TX in October 2010. They presented well-attended educational sessions and served as volunteers. The SUB won several graphic design awards including 3rd place for an MSU vs. LSU bus trip flyer/t-shirt and 1st place for their website and an on-site graphic designed during the conference. This marks their 6th year winning awards at APCA conferences. SUB staff and advisors also presented educational sessions at the conference.
1. “Another Fine Showing for MSU Student Union Board at
APCA Conference”
The McNeese State University Student Union Board had another fine showing at the Association
for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) Regional Conference. The conference was held October
1 – 3, 2010 at the Renaissance Greenway Plaza Hotel in Houston, TX. Led by their President, Jessica
White, the group presented an Educational Session at the conference titled “The Impression of a
Lifetime.” The session was highly attended. Advisor, Kedrick Nicholas presented two Educational
Sessions titled “Bringing Conference Home: Cost Effective Networking” and “Maximize the Potential of
Your Programs”, which were also highly attended sessions. The entire staff served as volunteers for the
conference helping distribute materials at showcases and other conference functions. The climax of the
group’s representation of McNeese was the awards received for the graphics competitions. Awards
were as follows:

This marks the 6th consecutive conference that SUB has brought home 1st – 3rd Place awards for
graphics competitions at APCA conferences. The group plans to continue this streak at the upcoming
National Conference in March 2011 as well as pursue other National Awards eligible to the Board that
have been achieved by the group over the past two years. All competitions and awards are eligible to all
APCA associate colleges and universities across the nation. SUB continues to represent our University
with professionalism, pride, and hard work.

First impressions last a lifetime, or so they say. Whether or not this expression is entirely truthful, a great first
impression can’t hurt you. This session is designed to utilize an interactive approach to analyze positive elements
of a great first impression and deconstruct the elements of a bad first impression. The Student Union Board
programming staff will demonstrate these elements through a variety of amusing activities, from mock speed
dating to student experience discussions.

Are you struggling to gain student involvement with your programs? Kedrick Nicholas, Advisor of the Student
Union Board at McNeese State University will give examples of ways to “program within programming”. He will
explain how several of their programs evolved from being apathetic to exciting and student-centered. You will
receive ideas for fun student competitions, student showcasing, and other elements that can be merged into your
current programs. There will also be time in this session for you to share ways your school incorporates student
involvement in your programs.

Do you gain so much from APCA conferences you wish you could take some of the experience home? Kedrick
Nicholas (McNeese State University), Kirk Lee (Northwestern State University), and Michelle Greco (Delgado
Community College) are all Advisors of programming organizations and will share with you the model for forming a
mini network with your neighboring colleges and universities. The trio will foster steps for creating, implementing,
and evaluating a low cost, low production retreat conference amongst institutions within your small network.

Each of their programming organizations recently participated in their 2 annual retreat conference and will share
their experiences of this valuable supplement to attending APCA. They will also explain how their retreat has more
developed in its second year.
