Endocrinology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the study of
hormones and glands. Some of the themes covered include adrenal
and pituitary glands, neuroendocrine and diabetes, among others.The
discipline covers ailments that are caused due to disturbances or
imbalance in the hormones in the body. These could be related to
functions such as metabolism and reproduction and could include

endocrinology. Students either read a few modules on the same as part

theoretical curriculum. The nature and duration of specialised
fellowships also vary from country to country. Universities may also
offer combination programmes such as endocrinology and diabetes or

degree with focus on one or more specific aspects of the discipline.
Often, these degrees are offered at the doctoral or postdoctoral level.
Aspirants wishing to take up endocrinology as a specialisation must
have an interest and understanding of the endocrine system as a
whole. An interest in research may not be necessary but can help.

Many may also choose to further specialize in fields like paediatric
endocrinology or neuroendocrinology. Newer medical research is slowly
leading to changes in the discipline in the form of new specialisations.
Those who wish to make a career in endocrinology can find employment in
public health, private practice or academic research. Endocrinologists may
also be required to work in collaboration with other specialists like
cardiologists or gynaecologists due to the nature of ailments related to
metabolic functions. Endocrinologists, generally, do not perform surgeries.
While super specialty hospitals are becoming popular, there will be a
demand for endocrinologists due to the range of ailments they diagnose. For
instance, according to the International Diabetes Foundation, about 387
million people are currently living with diabetes, globally, with about 43% of
the global population having undiagnosed diabetes, thereby signalling the
need for trained personnel in this field.
