Topic: “explain how your race and class has influenced your life experiences.”
I was born and raised in China which makes Race and ethnicity has not influenced me that much. I have not considered any of these problems before I came to the states. From what I heard, racial discrimination is common especially in the United States. People make their decisions not on one’s achievement but on their racial group. For our Asian especially Chinese, the situation of model minority is around us in many ways.
After I finished my freshman year, I was looking for a job on campus, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do until my math professor found me. When I took her class, I basically knew all the stuff because those were what I have learned when I was in grade 9 in China. When I took a nap on her class, she ignored me because she knew I knew all of those without learning. I became the math tutor without a doubt. When I was trying to help students out, a lot of student were asking me some questions like “how did you know that without using the calculator?” or “I heard all Chinese are good at math, is that true?”. After I learned the lecture from class, I realized that belongs to model minority.
Roadmap: Stroop
Overview:
Lab 2 introduces you to the nuts and bolts of another classic experimental psychology paradigm, the Stroop effect. Data collection will occur on the computers. Each student will complete a 20-30 minute Stroop experiment. The data will be analyzed and reported in a full APA style research report.
The main goal of this experiment is provide a concrete example of a 2x2 Factorial Design. As well, we will learn to relate theory and data.You will be taught about the horse-race model of Stroop, and you will use this model to predict the data from the class experiment.
The class experiment has two goals. First, to replicate the Stroop effect. Second, to test a manipulation that will reduce the size of the Stroop effect. In this case, the manipulation will be task. For half of the trials, you will identify the color, and for the other half of the trials you will identify the word.
In your research paper you will be required to introduce the Stroop effect, and explain the horse race model. You will explain how the horse race model can be used to predict which task will lead to the largest Stroop effect. You will describe the methods and results. The results will be reported in a figure or table (your choice).
NOTE: when you report the results you MUST report all main effects, the interaction, and any necessary post-hoc tests.

Attached is a slide deck I created on coding textual data, and below are links to a video on coding and an article on identifying themes in qualitative data. Also, some learners find the Week 8 lecture helpful to this assignment, so I have attached it here as well.
As you prepare this assignment, closely follow the directions in the PSY 850 Assignments Document. Because it asks you to inductively code the data, I will expect to see that each of you have developed your own codes and themes. That means do not use the codes and themes from the Clark and Springer (2007) article. However, you should compare and contrast your findings with theirs in the recommendations section.
Submit one paper in APA format with the required subsections delineated in the Assignments Guide: Introduction, Sample, Instruments, Data Analysis, Results, and Recommendations. Include a references list. You must complete all three tables in the Tables for Assignment 7 document and include those tables as an Appendix in your document. Do not submit them as a separate document nor embed them within the text of the paper.

Method
Participants
A total of 479 undergraduate students from Western Sydney University were recruited via convenience sampling and participated in a study investigating the effects of age of acquisition and the emotional nature of words in lexical access. Participation was completed voluntarily as part of an assessment task. Data from 104 participants was rejected as they either did not complete the task or their accuracy was less than 80%. Therefore, the final sample size was 375.
Materials and Apparatus
Two sets of letter strings were used in the experiment: words and nonwords. All the stimuli were 3 to 8 characters long. There were 4 categories of words: early acquiring emotional words (EE), early acquiring non-emotional words (ENE), late acquiring emotional words (LE) and late acquiring non-emotional words (LNE). A total of 40 words in each category was used. Early acquiring words were acquired before 5 years of age and late acquiring words were acquired after 7 years of age. The word stimuli were taken from the normative developmental dataset for emotion vocabulary comprehension (Baron-Cohen, Golan, Wheelwright, Granader, & Hill, 2010). The nonwords were selected from ARC nonword database (Rastle, Harrington, & Coltheart, 2002). A total of 120 nonwords were used.
The stimuli were presented in a dual lexical decision task where two letter strings were presented on the screen. For half of the trials (80), both the strings were words and for the remaining half (80) either one or both of the letter strings were nonwords. When both the strings were words, they belonged to the same category of words (EE, ENE, LE, LNE). There were 20 trials for each category of words.

Thesis dissertation101
This document provides an overview of developing a thesis or dissertation from conception to execution. Variation in speech tempo: Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and all of us in between
Kendall (2009) shows that speech rate correlates to region, ethnicity, gender, and age. Beyond average rates, acceleration and deceleration matter. Psychologists and musicologists link tempo not only to demographic categories, but to emotions and personality-types, too.
An analysis of five Star Trek episodes shows how differences in tempo match differences in characters, from the highly variable tempos of a passionate Captain Kirk to the measured, burst-free speech of the emotionless Mr. Spock. The actors deploy tempo stylistically, creating emotions and personalities that audiences understand.
To calculate evenness and irregularity in tempo, I adapt measures of burstiness that network traffic engineering uses for packets traveling across the Internet: computing the variance in time between syllable nuclei in an utterance, then dividing the variance by 0.5*the number of syllables. The bigger the ratio, the more it is characterized by clusters.
Kirk’s burstiness differs significantly from his crew: at least four times greater than all the others at their burstiest. Everyone’s bursts correlate to emotional “hot spots”—areas of increased involvement (Çetin and Shriberg 2006).
I demonstrate that meanings of tempo are structured by two themes: (i) arousal (“action readiness”) and (ii) ideologies about time. These emerge not just in the Star Trek data but from building
indexical fields for “fast talk” and “slow talk.” In the spirit of Eckert (2008), the fields begin with proven correlations. I also develop a rapid survey methodology—results from 50 participants chart a constellation of ideological meanings that describe who talks fast/slow and when.
This paper differs from most work on social meaning by focusing on a suprasegmental aspect of speech. It also draws upon psychology, anthropology, musicology, and computer science. Its use of performances distills stylistic tempo from reflexive, cognitive effects, offering insights that assist our understanding of how tempo gets used in naturally-occurring speech.

Participants
A total of 479 undergraduate students from Western Sydney University were recruited via convenience sampling and participated in a study investigating the effects of age of acquisition and the emotional nature of words in lexical access. Participation was completed voluntarily as part of an assessment task. Data from 104 participants was rejected as they either did not complete the task or their accuracy was less than 80%. Therefore, the final sample size was 375.
Materials and Apparatus
Two sets of letter strings were used in the experiment: words and nonwords. All the stimuli were 3 to 8 characters long. There were 4 categories of words: early acquiring emotional words (EE), early acquiring non-emotional words (ENE), late acquiring emotional words (LE) and late acquiring non-emotional words (LNE). It discusses developing a research question, working with a committee, writing a proposal, and planning the thesis or dissertation. For the research question, it emphasizes that the question should address outstanding issues, have significance, and be answerable. It advises picking a supportive committee and structuring communication. For the proposal, it recommends including an introduction, problem statement, framework, methods, significance, and timeline. It also offers strategies for writing such as outlining, writing groups, and editing in multiple stages.
Variation in speech tempo: Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and all of us in between
Kendall (2009) shows that speech rate correlates to region, ethnicity, gender, and age. Beyond average rates, acceleration and deceleration matter. Psychologists and musicologists link tempo not only to demographic categories, but to emotions and personality-types, too.
An analysis of five Star Trek episodes shows how differences in tempo match differences in characters, from the highly variable tempos of a passionate Captain Kirk to the measured, burst-free speech of the emotionless Mr. Spock. The actors deploy tempo stylistically, creating emotions and personalities that audiences understand.
To calculate evenness and irregularity in tempo, I adapt measures of burstiness that network traffic engineering uses for packets traveling across the Internet: computing the variance in time between syllable nuclei in an utterance, then dividing the variance by 0.5*the number of syllables. The bigger the ratio, the more it is characterized by clusters.
Kirk’s burstiness differs significantly from his crew: at least four times greater than all the others at their burstiest. Everyone’s bursts correlate to emotional “hot spots”—areas of increased involvement (Çetin and Shriberg 2006).
I demonstrate that meanings of tempo are structured by two themes: (i) arousal (“action readiness”) and (ii) ideologies about time. These emerge not just in the Star Trek data but from building
indexical fields for “fast talk” and “slow talk.” In the spirit of Eckert (2008), the fields begin with proven correlations. I also develop a rapid survey methodology—results from 50 participants chart a constellation of ideological meanings that describe who talks fast/slow and when.
This paper differs from most work on social meaning by focusing on a suprasegmental aspect of speech. It also draws upon psychology, anthropology, musicology, and computer science. Its use of performances distills stylistic tempo from reflexive, cognitive effects, offering insights that assist our understanding of how tempo gets used in naturally-occurring speech.
