OPENspace, in collaboration with research partners at the Universities of Salford and Warwick, is hosting a third international conference in Edinburgh, UK. The event will coincide with the publication of findings from the consortium's flagship research project - Inclusive Design for Getting Outdoors (I'DGO) - and marks the tenth anniversary of OPENspace, based at Edinburgh College of Art, The University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University. The conference will focus on recent research into the design and provision of accessible outdoor environments for everyone - people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

First Call for Presentation Abstracts
Submissions
Abstracts are invited for presentation at the Open Space: People Space Conference, 2011.
The Programme of accepted submissions will take the form of brief, 8 minute presentations in
sessions that combine 6 such presentations and conclude with a combined discussion forum.
Presenters will also have the opportunity to display a poster of their work during the
Conference.
Please read the following information on formatting your abstract carefully. Submissions
should be made online. This online facility will be made available soon on the OPENspace
website at: www.openspace.eca.ac.uk.
Themes
Abstracts should focus on topics related to inclusive outdoor environments and cover areas
within the main themes of the Conference:
• Inclusive design and sustainable community planning
• Physical environment, health and wellbeing
• Age-friendly built environments from childhood to old age
Abstracts should be submitted for consideration no later than: 31st January, 2011
Authors will be notified of acceptance, in writing by: 28th February, 2011
Authors will be invited to submit a final version of the abstract by: 14th March, 2011
Abstracts of accepted presentations will be published in Conference proceedings. Selected
papers may be invited to form part of a dedicated publication which would be published in
2012.

2. Types of papers invited
1. Research papers
These are papers which present results of new research. The abstracts need to refer to the
research question, the context and theory of the problem, the methodology used, the main
results and some broad conclusions supported with up to 5 key references.
2. Review or theoretical papers
These are papers offering review, appraisal and critique of existing research or practice, or
which aim to advance theory. The abstracts need to refer to a question which is raised, the
context of the review or theoretical reflection, some original observations and analysis or new
contributions to theory, and a number of key conclusions supported with some references as
above.
In all cases, conclusions should highlight the novel or innovative contribution of your work.
Format
Abstracts should be written in English, a maximum of 300 words, presented on a single A4 page,
typed in double-spacing using Tahoma Font 12-point.
Five keywords should also be included, and an indication of which theme the abstract is fits most
closely.
Abstracts will be blind reviewed so please ensure that there is no author identification included with
your abstract text.
R eferences: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references
following the body text. The list of references should be carefully checked to ensure that the
spelling of authors’ names and dates are exactly the same as in the text. In the text, refer to
the author’s name and year of publication, followed, if necessary, by a short reference to the
appropriate pages, for example:
“…as suggested by Forman (1995: 43)…”
A list of all references should be given at the end of the text, typed in Tahoma 11-point, single
line spacing, with a blank line between each reference cited. For example:
