Strengths And Weaknesses Of Reading Essay
My Path
A person's strength was always his weakness. When it comes to reading and writing, I have many strengths and weaknesses. My past writing and
reading experiences have made me into the writer/reader that I today. Strengths help me excel in my read/write, but the weaknesses do bring me in a
stump at times. When writing an essay, you can have a very high vocabulary, but not have the best of grammar. The good thing about weaknesses is
that they can be worked on to be made into a strength. Many people achieve this by setting goals and making the new one harder and harder. Without
strengths or weaknesses or even goals, how would people learn from their mistakes, becoming better at what they're not or achieve their aims.
The shortcomings,...show more content...
When I am writing narratives, I use many different characteristics to describe the characters, and when I was watching Ted Talks and doing the
chart, it made me think about the speaker's features and how I can use them to describe my characters better. Also, I use my time efficiently I don't
fool around and talk to others. I get right to my work and complete it. I accept writing criticism very well too, I use it to improve my writing.
Another strength that I have in writing is I have excellent spelling, and I punctuate very well. Likewise in writing, I also have my strengths in
reading. While reading a novel, I can illustrate what is going on in the book or the story in my mind which helps me understand that story more. It
helps me to 'get into' the book. Also, another strength that I have in reading is that I can annotate and get information out of books very well. That,
coupled with the fact that I am very good at figuring out hidden messages or finding the theme of the book. Notes I take from the novel help when I
am flipping back through the book to support my theme or message with evidence.
Furthermore, as a writer and reader, I have my goals that I set out to achieve to become better. An example of a goal that I have for writing is to start
adding more evidence in my paragraphs so that the structures of my paragraphs become more 'juicy.' Another goal I have for my writing is to have
better grammar and higher vocabulary. Having better grammar and better

Reading Strategies Paper
During the past few months, I have been shown, by this course a variety of different reading strategies that can help me read at a daily bases. The
strategies in this course consist of five levels of thinking. The first level is to acquire information or knowledge. Second level is to understand and
comprehended what you acquired. Third level apply the knowledge that you acquired. Level four to analyze the information. Finally the fifth level is to
evaluate the information. Each of these levels has different reading strategies that help the reader to become an active reader and that is my goal in
this class. In this paper I am going show the different types of reading strategies covered in this course by using a pyramid with five levels of thinking

Understanding the topic, to determine the topic of a paragraph, is knowing what the general idea of the whole paragraph is about. The reason why
the paragraph was made in first place. Like for example: I went hiking up Camelback mountain with my friends and we had a great time we got to
the top of the mountain we took lots of photos of our soundings it was beautiful. The topic is I went hiking with my friends. Normally, the topic is
the summary of the whole paragraph. The topic is the most important piece of the paragraph. Without a topic the reader is not going to understand
what he or she is reading. Similar to the topic is the main idea. The main idea is similar to the topic because it's the summary of the paragraph. The
main idea is normally stated in the first paragraph most of the time in the first sentence this lets the reader know what the whole paragraph is going to
be about. The main idea is a sentence of a paragraph summarized into one sentence. As compared to a topic it is less general and has more detail than a
topic. Aside from the topic there are the supporting details. The supporting details help to bring everything together to get the information I need to
know about the topic. The supporting details is information given after stating the topic, its ongoing information about the topic. Like for example,
hiking is the topic, the supporting details are, I was going up the mountain and I was struggling to catch my breath. This is a supporting detail about the

Summer Reading Essay
There are so many excuses I could've made up explaining why I didn't do the Summer Reading Essay.I know I had more than enough time to finish
reading my book and do my essay, but I just didn't put enough effort into it.Honestly the whole "Summer Reading" idea is a bunch of nonsense, but don't
get me wrong I get why the school system wants us to read. Two months without classes can dumb down our brains,so reading now and then won't hurt.
I was fully aware how impactful this assignment was on my grade, but that did not stop me from procrastinating. If only I put more effort into reading
and doing the right thing maybe I would have finished the assignment.I really do care about my grade in this class. This poor example of my behavior

Reflection About Reading
Reading
Introduction
Reading is one of the main skills for learning a language. Reading is a skill that requires learning. It has its own strategies to be mastered. Although
reading skills promote at early age by the support of parents, teachers play an important role in varying strategies of learning reading at children.
The way I learned English I learned to read English by scaffolding the long words to know which part of speech they are. I started by reading words,
phrases, sentences, paragraphs then whole pages. At the start, I realized the mistake I was making by stopping at each difficult word to translate. This
interrupted my whole understanding of what I was reading. Then I moved to guessing difficult words from the context. I...show more content...
The second strategy is scanning. It is a primarily quick reading through that allows me to break reading into pieces or scaffolding to reach the main
ideas. Scanning is to review what you have read to understand your reading. Deconstructing the material of reading is a direct purpose of reading. It
allows to get specific details to connect with general ideas to get a full picture of what is being read. The third strategy is summarizing. I used to give
the reading passage again but in my own words to make sure to what extent I mastered it. This develops my understanding of the reading material.
Then I answer reading questions and try to get answers from my summary and from the original reading material to make sure my summary lacks
nothing.
Summarizing makes me understand what I am reading using a simpler language. The fourth strategy to learn English reading is discussing. I used to
discuss what I read which an adult or a teacher. Discussing my reading will add assurance and full understanding of it. It will make me more able to
apply what I read in life through discussing and analyzing looking for positive and negative aspects in the reading passage. Discussion based reading
can also be tested through answering questions related to the passage if reading and commenting on them. The fifth strategy is extracting. It is very
important to use it for getting information out if visual charts or timetables. I

The Art of Reading by Lin Yutang
At the beginning of this essay, Yutang starts speaking about the differences between the mind of a person who reads and of someone who does
not read. Lin show his point of view very cleary telling us how small can be the thoughts of someone who does not read can be when "His life falls into
a set routine," (90) a non reader can be easily impressed by the world outside because, Lin says, "he only sees what happen in his immediate
neighborhood," (90). Expressing a point of view as radical as comparing the mind of a person who frequently reads with another which does not read
can be dangerous for an author. What I mean by saying "can be dangerous" is...show more content...
(92); he talks about how schools have made so boring to kids to read. Reading should not be something that inspire a negative feeling in children.
Therefore I think he is completely right. In my opinion the 60% of people who does not read is because how forced they were in school to read
something they never cared about. Reading something you are interested in its the opportunity to be seated in a place, but at the same time being
everywhere; to create faces, landscapes, scenes, is your chance to travel without paying a single penny. In the other hand I think reading things we
are no interested in is something we will never get rid of. School is a phase in life we have to pass, lucky you if you are positive and just face that
phase with a positive attitude. Being in a denial of not reading is a mistake, and this essay is the perfect one to read if you are one of those. We are all
so different from each other, Lin try to make us understand "There can be, therefore, no boos that one absolutely must read" (92) . He says there are
no books we need to read but instead maybe there is going to come the time a reader will need to read some a specific book. We all get different "flavor
" of lecture in spite of the situation or mood we are going through. That is why Lin also writes about how can a reader can get different impressions of
a book if he or she reads it in

Reading and Writing Skills Essay
Reading and Writing Skills
I remember when I started kindergarten. It was August 27, 1990. I'm still a little angry about that day because it was my fifth birthday and I still
remember that I didn't get to wear a crown on that day like the rest of my classmates did on their birthdays. I guess I didn't get to wear the crown
because it was the first day of school. But besides that, kindergarten was a really great year. In the mornings we'd go around the classroom to different
stations and play different games, then we'd go to P.E., thenlunch, and finally nap time. That was the year I learned how to count to one thousand. My
teacher Mrs. Collins would sit with us and we'd count every morning. And every morning we'd count a...show more content...
I also went through a phase in junior high where I bought non–fiction diaries of teenagers that struggled through different problems. Those always
kept me entertained and they were the type of books that I could never put down. Reading was never something that I just did in school. I did it
whenever we had free time in class, after school, and at night before bed. It was always one of my hobbies. I also found writing very interesting. I
enjoyed writing papers for all of my English classes. Every one was a little different and every year I truly believe that I became a better writer. I
learned different ways to write and I believe that I always met my teacher's expectations in my papers. I remember in fifth grade I had to write my
first autobiography. That was the only time until now that I got to write entirely about myself. It's a project that I'll never forget. My teacher gave us
about a month to write this paper and put a book together. The book consisted of my paper and pictures all glued to construction paper. In that
autobiography I wrote about my time growing up, my family, my friends, my hobbies, etc. My parents still have that book. It was such an impacting
project. It was really nice to reflect on my time growing up and the things I enjoyed.
When I was eight years old, I learned how to play the piano. Even though reading music is different than reading words and sentences, it's also very
much the same. Different notes are put

Essay on The Importance of Reading
Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In today's world with so
much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the
olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of
telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for
an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and catch up...show

There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance,
or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one
for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure,
reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and
loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple
motive of escape and of "killing" time.
A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading
broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created
by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man".
Thus a widely–read man is a better conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view.
Literature is a form

Reading Books Essay
Text books are a source to develop reading skill. The words in the text books create a sense among the students to understand written materials other
than their text books. So students practice and this practice develops their reading skill gradually and the words of text books are helpful to develop
reading. Stephen Gramley and Kurt – Michael Patzold (2004, P. 91) assert that only the choice of vocabulary and use of syntax remain as elements of
style which may contain hints as to region, class, sex or age. It is a fact that foreign learners do not have enough number of words through which
they can express their meanings. Reading of text books is effective. If text books are taught in a good way, the students will master most of initial
rules so that they may be able to deal with problems relating to their future progress in reading by themselves. It means reading of text books is
significant to get a good command on comprehension. If text books are taught properly and their reading is practiced, the students will naturally be
equipped to read more books. Otherwise they see texts as contexts for global or overall comprehension. But most of the foreign readers, as they are
generally taught through grammar, get programmed to focus on individual words....show more content...

What difference has Advanced English Reading course made to my learning ––A Summary Report of Advanced English Reading
After the end of Advanced English Reading course I have to take the question into consideration that what I have gained? Reading skills? High grades
in final examination? Or a certificate of CET–6? All above are not I have gained or not enough, and not worth to discussing them. What I considered
them worth to discussing even not gained enough are writing skills, courage of opening mouth to speck English in public and the point that should been

Those gains come to my learning inch by inch.

Reflective Essay About Reading
Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and is how we discover new things. More than
anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words
creating a strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun and enjoyable because of the animated
pictures and presentation of the words. After each time they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next
book. If a good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more naturally, it will bring more pleasure. I
believe the key to successfully getting a student to read is to make it as enjoyable as possible. In reading this article, I was able to relate on a few
different levels. I could put myself in the teacher's shoes on some levels, but even more so with the students. In Middle School, one of our reading
assignments were reading cards, for which our teacher would pick a new genre each month and we had to read chapter books according to the
genre. Reading cards were a tool the students would use to summarize their readings each time they read. The reading cards consisted of a chapter
book the teacher chose, each month a different genre. After each section we read, a short summary was to be written and we had to write down and
look up any words we didn't know. This was

Reading Literacy Essay
Reading is a basic skill that students develop and improve throughout their whole life. There will always be room to improve a person's reading skills;
whether they be nine or ninety, one's brain will always be building and making new connections and like Jonathan Seagull, one should strive to
improve. There was one assignment in particular that I felt was the most fitting for what the Reading Literacy chart asks for. In this activity students
were given a prompt and 1 hour to complete an essay arguing a point. They were also given articles which the students could read, research, and take
whatever information they feel would be best fitting for proving their argument. As well as having to read articles they were also asked to connect their

Reflection On Academic Reading
Reading is one of my favorite pastimes. I am a tuned–in Reader, and I appreciate well written biographies. Enjoyable reading takes my mind off school
work and relaxes me. I enjoy academic reading as well, but sometimes it is intense and requires much concentration. Moreover, I am a tuned in
reader when it comes to academic subject's such as; psychology, nutrition, health and history. Every spare moment I have; I pick up a book or
magazine, and get carried away, by the text. I visualize the story and its' characters as if, the story is taking place right next to me. Furthermore, I
predict the outcomes of the stories and pose questions in my mind about the characters. I enjoy reading biographies about famous people like
Charles Dickens and Anne Frank. Additionally, I enjoy reading short stories and magazines such as; Binah, Ami, and Mishpachah. I am fascinated
by the astounding articles in the Ami. For example, the article about a "Journey to North Korea", makes me feel as if I had experienced it myself.
Academic reading gives me a sense of accomplishment and joy. Generally, I am a tuned in reader, when it comes to reading information. When I am
reading, I analyze and visualize the ideas of the passage. When I stop and think of what I am reading, it enhances my level of comprehension. My
appreciation is also increased, to understand and learn new information. Furthermore, I enjoy taking my academic reading to a different level, by

What Is Your Reading Goals Essay
When I was younger I actually enjoyed reading. I would reader chapter books a whole of them. It wouldn't take me that long either. But, they weren't
that big either. If it wasn't for my teacher then I probably wouldn't be the reader that I am today.
My teacher in first grade was the first one who influenced me to be the reader that I am. She would let us spell our vocabulary words out on the
desks with shaving cream. By doing that make me influenced to wanting to learn how to read and how to spell. I figured out that I learn a lot better
when I am doing hand on things and not just sitting listening to the teacher talk. She would also sing songs that would go with the words and the work
that we did. We would sit on the carpet in a circle and she would make jokes about the book and the stuff that she taught us. So, by her making songs to
remember things it turns out that I started doing that while spelling out vocabulary words out.
My third grade teacher would always get onto me for reading out loud. Well, of course I...show more content...

is to raise my reading goal a lot higher this year. My reading goal was always where it needed to be for what grade I was in now it is way lower than it
should be. I tend to struggle so much when I read sometimes because I get distracted really easily. Whenever I read I usually read at night right before
i go to bed because I always end up falling asleep. I have always likes to write stories about my life or whatever the teacher assigns us to write or I just
make it up. My mom is a big reader she likes to read all the time. She reads whenever she has free time and always always before she goes to bed. She
has her out kindle and she reads a bunch of books off of that. I guess I now know where I get my reading

My Experience Of Reading
While I was in middle school in sixth grade I actually didn't know how to read books or any story my teachers would give me. As I was reading
through the passages they would give me, I noticed that while I read a story it wouldn't stick to my head. I then told myself that it is going to be
difficult to read passages since nothing would click in my head. There were times where the teacher would have the students and I take mini
quizzes and I would hardly understand on what the reader was talking about. I would fail the quizzes due to the reason that I never gained much
knowledge in reading. Articles and stories would always be tough for me to read since I didn't have many experience in reading. Therefore, half of
sixth grade my teacher whom was named Ms. Soto which was an English teacher had really made reading easier for me as the semester went by. I
had told her I was having difficulties in reading and she gladly helped me out. Every time I needed help with a problem from the story she was
gladly there to help me. For example, the many things she would help me out with was having to stay after school for about an hour reading poems,
articles and short passages from books she would give me. She also had me read magazine pages every three times a week to better my
understanding of what I'm reading. I then was told that it would be a good opportunity to come in on Saturdays for reading to better my knowledge in
what I'm reading. With all the help from my sixth–grade teacher

If we say that the author replaced his thoughts and ideas from his heart by the words, this is a kind of communication between the author and the
reader. Corresponding to the readers from the reading, they can learn an author's life, thoughts, knowledge, and experience. Reading has becoming a
way of life for people. Its importance to human impact is unprecedented. Now the 21st century is an era of the Internet. People, especially children
learn a wide range of knowledge from the Internet. Reading from the Internet and reading the book is different from two aspects: distraction and

Now we live in a great society that students are educated and had money to buy luxury. In other poor areas, "books are expensive, and many
destitute parents have not attended school themselves" (Danticat 95), so reading becomes an obstacle. People should learn contentment, especially
children have an excellent condition to go to school. Books are not just the passage of boring time, but also nutrients that people cannot forgot to
take. Nowadays students are very conflicted in reading or giving a reading assignment by the teacher. They are unwilling or inattentive, and then
they forget it in the end. "Reading was, at best, only a chore" (Rodriguez 190) leads some students read for extra credit, which is their motivation.
Reading for many people, especially student groups played a large part of the role. If people can only read without understanding the true meaning of
the book, it is useless. Students learn mainly knowledge from school textbooks, if the child only mastered the knowledge of the textbook, then the
knowledge is limited to books, failed to allow them to experience different and touch more knowledge besides of textbook. Students should read more
books outside of school, they help to accumulate vocabulary besides textbooks. Parents trust books because they are like a guardian "to keep kids
from the neighborhood out of gangs" (Danticat 97) and no need to worry about

In this section the researcher reviews the literature from the past researches or opinions about the important of the learning vocabulary and impacts of
reading and short story in the scope of language learning and teaching and also the relation between reading, short story and vocabulary learning.
Theattention of this section especially is on reviewing of the impacts of the reading story on English, especially, vocabulary learning of the EFL
learners.
For the first part of this chapter, it's better to start with the definition of vocabulary.
2.2 The conceptual definition of vocabulary
What is vocabulary?
If we want to define the vocabulary, it is the knowledge of words & their meanings.
As Stahl (2005) states," vocabulary knowledge is knowledge; the knowledge of word not only implies a definition, but also implies how that word fits
into the world"." Vocabulary" can have at least three different meanings;
1. All of the words in a language; new words are constantly being added to language.
2. The words used in a particular context
That is necessary to improve your business vocabulary if you are going to do MBA
3. The words which an individual person knows them
The teacher said that my vocabulary is good.
There is a difference between Active And Passive Vocabulary in our own individual vocabulary, the words which we understand and use them are
called our active vocabulary and the words which we understand but do not or cannot use them are called our

Reflection On Reading Comprehension
Introduction
Reading is one of the most beneficial activities a man can do. Out of reading, man can be able to discover new things, concepts, places and people.
More so, reading is a way to relax our mind and soul, going deeply through the world of story and improves our thinking and internalization process.
Furthermore, reading opens the mind to new horizons and exposes a new experience. That's why, whilst reading it also needs some sort of any other
way of process, wherein man can read and understand texts deeply. This so–called other way of process is the outlining, that in such a way, can be a
tool for a meaningful reading comprehension.
An outline establishes an orderly relationship of facts or ideas. It is an essential tool and a time–saver. (De La Cruz and Aquino, 2008). It is the guide
when reading or guide for writing a report. Furthermore, outlining serves as a visualization of the ideas and information in an orderly manner....show

that reading proficiency has a strong relationship between reading proficiency and academic success at all ages included in the university level. It is

Essay on Development of Reading Skills
Reading comprehension skill consists of different types of reading which is related to reading styles. The aptitudes of using these skills conserve a lot
of time and helps in understanding the meaning from the text.
Reading skills can be categorized to four important skills which are, intensive reading, extensive reading, scanning and skimming which have a
significant and substantial role in facilitating reading activity.
Intensive reading is practicing reading inside the classroom by supervising with a tutor and demands focusing on details in order to comprehend the
text appropriately.
Brown (1994) has been claimed that a reader has to analyze the text by seeking of grammatical structures and other details for the purpose to build

In this type of reading, short texts of no more than 500 words can be used so as to consolidate and reinforce the ability in reading with satisfaction and

Critics such as Macleod (2004) argues that reading short text prevent readers to practice full time reading and using equivalent materials restricts the
independence of select and read different topics furthermore choosing a text by a tutor neglects the interest of reading as well as reading short texts
does not contain sufficient language diversity which is diminish the language benefits of the text.
Extensive reading is another type of reading style which is practiced outside the classroom and the material are chosen by readers to warrant
appropriate option to increase the chances in reading activity and the major ideas of this skill is to attain a general understanding of a text with a lesser
amount of focusing on grammatical details and construct a self confident to enhance a high number of readers to read with enthusiasm. (Brown1994).
As Macleod (2004) states that it is general comprehending without focusing on difficult words.
A large number of learners faced many difficulties in reading but can be developed by means of extensive reading and continual practice and which is
the most effectual way to improve language proficiency.

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Reading Essay

  • 1. Strengths And Weaknesses Of Reading Essay My Path A person's strength was always his weakness. When it comes to reading and writing, I have many strengths and weaknesses. My past writing and reading experiences have made me into the writer/reader that I today. Strengths help me excel in my read/write, but the weaknesses do bring me in a stump at times. When writing an essay, you can have a very high vocabulary, but not have the best of grammar. The good thing about weaknesses is that they can be worked on to be made into a strength. Many people achieve this by setting goals and making the new one harder and harder. Without strengths or weaknesses or even goals, how would people learn from their mistakes, becoming better at what they're not or achieve their aims. The shortcomings,...show more content... When I am writing narratives, I use many different characteristics to describe the characters, and when I was watching Ted Talks and doing the chart, it made me think about the speaker's features and how I can use them to describe my characters better. Also, I use my time efficiently I don't fool around and talk to others. I get right to my work and complete it. I accept writing criticism very well too, I use it to improve my writing. Another strength that I have in writing is I have excellent spelling, and I punctuate very well. Likewise in writing, I also have my strengths in reading. While reading a novel, I can illustrate what is going on in the book or the story in my mind which helps me understand that story more. It helps me to 'get into' the book. Also, another strength that I have in reading is that I can annotate and get information out of books very well. That, coupled with the fact that I am very good at figuring out hidden messages or finding the theme of the book. Notes I take from the novel help when I am flipping back through the book to support my theme or message with evidence. Furthermore, as a writer and reader, I have my goals that I set out to achieve to become better. An example of a goal that I have for writing is to start adding more evidence in my paragraphs so that the structures of my paragraphs become more 'juicy.' Another goal I have for my writing is to have better grammar and higher vocabulary. Having better grammar and better Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Reading Strategies Paper During the past few months, I have been shown, by this course a variety of different reading strategies that can help me read at a daily bases. The strategies in this course consist of five levels of thinking. The first level is to acquire information or knowledge. Second level is to understand and comprehended what you acquired. Third level apply the knowledge that you acquired. Level four to analyze the information. Finally the fifth level is to evaluate the information. Each of these levels has different reading strategies that help the reader to become an active reader and that is my goal in this class. In this paper I am going show the different types of reading strategies covered in this course by using a pyramid with five levels of thinking ...show more content... Understanding the topic, to determine the topic of a paragraph, is knowing what the general idea of the whole paragraph is about. The reason why the paragraph was made in first place. Like for example: I went hiking up Camelback mountain with my friends and we had a great time we got to the top of the mountain we took lots of photos of our soundings it was beautiful. The topic is I went hiking with my friends. Normally, the topic is the summary of the whole paragraph. The topic is the most important piece of the paragraph. Without a topic the reader is not going to understand what he or she is reading. Similar to the topic is the main idea. The main idea is similar to the topic because it's the summary of the paragraph. The main idea is normally stated in the first paragraph most of the time in the first sentence this lets the reader know what the whole paragraph is going to be about. The main idea is a sentence of a paragraph summarized into one sentence. As compared to a topic it is less general and has more detail than a topic. Aside from the topic there are the supporting details. The supporting details help to bring everything together to get the information I need to know about the topic. The supporting details is information given after stating the topic, its ongoing information about the topic. Like for example, hiking is the topic, the supporting details are, I was going up the mountain and I was struggling to catch my breath. This is a supporting detail about the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Summer Reading Essay There are so many excuses I could've made up explaining why I didn't do the Summer Reading Essay.I know I had more than enough time to finish reading my book and do my essay, but I just didn't put enough effort into it.Honestly the whole "Summer Reading" idea is a bunch of nonsense, but don't get me wrong I get why the school system wants us to read. Two months without classes can dumb down our brains,so reading now and then won't hurt. I was fully aware how impactful this assignment was on my grade, but that did not stop me from procrastinating. If only I put more effort into reading and doing the right thing maybe I would have finished the assignment.I really do care about my grade in this class. This poor example of my behavior has taught me Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Reflection About Reading Reading Introduction Reading is one of the main skills for learning a language. Reading is a skill that requires learning. It has its own strategies to be mastered. Although reading skills promote at early age by the support of parents, teachers play an important role in varying strategies of learning reading at children. The way I learned English I learned to read English by scaffolding the long words to know which part of speech they are. I started by reading words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs then whole pages. At the start, I realized the mistake I was making by stopping at each difficult word to translate. This interrupted my whole understanding of what I was reading. Then I moved to guessing difficult words from the context. I...show more content... The second strategy is scanning. It is a primarily quick reading through that allows me to break reading into pieces or scaffolding to reach the main ideas. Scanning is to review what you have read to understand your reading. Deconstructing the material of reading is a direct purpose of reading. It allows to get specific details to connect with general ideas to get a full picture of what is being read. The third strategy is summarizing. I used to give the reading passage again but in my own words to make sure to what extent I mastered it. This develops my understanding of the reading material. Then I answer reading questions and try to get answers from my summary and from the original reading material to make sure my summary lacks nothing. Summarizing makes me understand what I am reading using a simpler language. The fourth strategy to learn English reading is discussing. I used to discuss what I read which an adult or a teacher. Discussing my reading will add assurance and full understanding of it. It will make me more able to apply what I read in life through discussing and analyzing looking for positive and negative aspects in the reading passage. Discussion based reading can also be tested through answering questions related to the passage if reading and commenting on them. The fifth strategy is extracting. It is very important to use it for getting information out if visual charts or timetables. I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. The art of reading essay #2 Barbara Gomez Mrs. Melissa Qualls EPP 150 10/23/2013 The Art of Reading by Lin Yutang At the beginning of this essay, Yutang starts speaking about the differences between the mind of a person who reads and of someone who does not read. Lin show his point of view very cleary telling us how small can be the thoughts of someone who does not read can be when "His life falls into a set routine," (90) a non reader can be easily impressed by the world outside because, Lin says, "he only sees what happen in his immediate neighborhood," (90). Expressing a point of view as radical as comparing the mind of a person who frequently reads with another which does not read can be dangerous for an author. What I mean by saying "can be dangerous" is...show more content... (92); he talks about how schools have made so boring to kids to read. Reading should not be something that inspire a negative feeling in children. Therefore I think he is completely right. In my opinion the 60% of people who does not read is because how forced they were in school to read something they never cared about. Reading something you are interested in its the opportunity to be seated in a place, but at the same time being everywhere; to create faces, landscapes, scenes, is your chance to travel without paying a single penny. In the other hand I think reading things we are no interested in is something we will never get rid of. School is a phase in life we have to pass, lucky you if you are positive and just face that phase with a positive attitude. Being in a denial of not reading is a mistake, and this essay is the perfect one to read if you are one of those. We are all so different from each other, Lin try to make us understand "There can be, therefore, no boos that one absolutely must read" (92) . He says there are no books we need to read but instead maybe there is going to come the time a reader will need to read some a specific book. We all get different "flavor " of lecture in spite of the situation or mood we are going through. That is why Lin also writes about how can a reader can get different impressions of a book if he or she reads it in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Reading and Writing Skills Essay Reading and Writing Skills I remember when I started kindergarten. It was August 27, 1990. I'm still a little angry about that day because it was my fifth birthday and I still remember that I didn't get to wear a crown on that day like the rest of my classmates did on their birthdays. I guess I didn't get to wear the crown because it was the first day of school. But besides that, kindergarten was a really great year. In the mornings we'd go around the classroom to different stations and play different games, then we'd go to P.E., thenlunch, and finally nap time. That was the year I learned how to count to one thousand. My teacher Mrs. Collins would sit with us and we'd count every morning. And every morning we'd count a...show more content... I also went through a phase in junior high where I bought non–fiction diaries of teenagers that struggled through different problems. Those always kept me entertained and they were the type of books that I could never put down. Reading was never something that I just did in school. I did it whenever we had free time in class, after school, and at night before bed. It was always one of my hobbies. I also found writing very interesting. I enjoyed writing papers for all of my English classes. Every one was a little different and every year I truly believe that I became a better writer. I learned different ways to write and I believe that I always met my teacher's expectations in my papers. I remember in fifth grade I had to write my first autobiography. That was the only time until now that I got to write entirely about myself. It's a project that I'll never forget. My teacher gave us about a month to write this paper and put a book together. The book consisted of my paper and pictures all glued to construction paper. In that autobiography I wrote about my time growing up, my family, my friends, my hobbies, etc. My parents still have that book. It was such an impacting project. It was really nice to reflect on my time growing up and the things I enjoyed. When I was eight years old, I learned how to play the piano. Even though reading music is different than reading words and sentences, it's also very much the same. Different notes are put Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Essay on The Importance of Reading Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In today's world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and catch up...show more content... There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of "killing" time. A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man". Thus a widely–read man is a better conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view. Literature is a form Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Reading Books Essay Text books are a source to develop reading skill. The words in the text books create a sense among the students to understand written materials other than their text books. So students practice and this practice develops their reading skill gradually and the words of text books are helpful to develop reading. Stephen Gramley and Kurt – Michael Patzold (2004, P. 91) assert that only the choice of vocabulary and use of syntax remain as elements of style which may contain hints as to region, class, sex or age. It is a fact that foreign learners do not have enough number of words through which they can express their meanings. Reading of text books is effective. If text books are taught in a good way, the students will master most of initial rules so that they may be able to deal with problems relating to their future progress in reading by themselves. It means reading of text books is significant to get a good command on comprehension. If text books are taught properly and their reading is practiced, the students will naturally be equipped to read more books. Otherwise they see texts as contexts for global or overall comprehension. But most of the foreign readers, as they are generally taught through grammar, get programmed to focus on individual words....show more content... • 10. Reflective Essay About Reading Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and is how we discover new things. More than anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words creating a strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun and enjoyable because of the animated pictures and presentation of the words. After each time they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next book. If a good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more naturally, it will bring more pleasure. I believe the key to successfully getting a student to read is to make it as enjoyable as possible. In reading this article, I was able to relate on a few different levels. I could put myself in the teacher's shoes on some levels, but even more so with the students. In Middle School, one of our reading assignments were reading cards, for which our teacher would pick a new genre each month and we had to read chapter books according to the genre. Reading cards were a tool the students would use to summarize their readings each time they read. The reading cards consisted of a chapter book the teacher chose, each month a different genre. After each section we read, a short summary was to be written and we had to write down and look up any words we didn't know. This was Get more content on HelpWriting.net

There will always be room to improve a person's reading skills; whether they be nine or ninety, one's brain will always be building and making new connections and like Jonathan Seagull, one should strive to improve. There was one assignment in particular that I felt was the most fitting for what the Reading Literacy chart asks for. In this activity students were given a prompt and 1 hour to complete an essay arguing a point. They were also given articles which the students could read, research, and take whatever information they feel would be best fitting for proving their argument. As well as having to read articles they were also asked to connect their Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Enjoyable reading takes my mind off school work and relaxes me. I enjoy academic reading as well, but sometimes it is intense and requires much concentration. Moreover, I am a tuned in reader when it comes to academic subject's such as; psychology, nutrition, health and history. Every spare moment I have; I pick up a book or magazine, and get carried away, by the text. I visualize the story and its' characters as if, the story is taking place right next to me. Furthermore, I predict the outcomes of the stories and pose questions in my mind about the characters. I enjoy reading biographies about famous people like Charles Dickens and Anne Frank. Additionally, I enjoy reading short stories and magazines such as; Binah, Ami, and Mishpachah. I am fascinated by the astounding articles in the Ami. For example, the article about a "Journey to North Korea", makes me feel as if I had experienced it myself. Academic reading gives me a sense of accomplishment and joy. Generally, I am a tuned in reader, when it comes to reading information. When I am reading, I analyze and visualize the ideas of the passage. When I stop and think of what I am reading, it enhances my level of comprehension. My appreciation is also increased, to understand and learn new information. • 13. What Is Your Reading Goals Essay When I was younger I actually enjoyed reading. I would reader chapter books a whole of them. It wouldn't take me that long either. But, they weren't that big either. If it wasn't for my teacher then I probably wouldn't be the reader that I am today. My teacher in first grade was the first one who influenced me to be the reader that I am. She would let us spell our vocabulary words out on the desks with shaving cream. By doing that make me influenced to wanting to learn how to read and how to spell. I figured out that I learn a lot better when I am doing hand on things and not just sitting listening to the teacher talk. She would also sing songs that would go with the words and the work that we did. We would sit on the carpet in a circle and she would make jokes about the book and the stuff that she taught us. So, by her making songs to remember things it turns out that I started doing that while spelling out vocabulary words out. My third grade teacher would always get onto me for reading out loud. Well, of course I...show more content... I appreciate all my teachers and what they have done to help me grow as a writer. My teachers always pushed me to become better. My goal this year is to raise my reading goal a lot higher this year. My reading goal was always where it needed to be for what grade I was in now it is way lower than it should be. I tend to struggle so much when I read sometimes because I get distracted really easily. Whenever I read I usually read at night right before i go to bed because I always end up falling asleep. I have always likes to write stories about my life or whatever the teacher assigns us to write or I just make it up. My mom is a big reader she likes to read all the time. She reads whenever she has free time and always always before she goes to bed. She has her out kindle and she reads a bunch of books off of that. • 14. My Experience Of Reading While I was in middle school in sixth grade I actually didn't know how to read books or any story my teachers would give me. As I was reading through the passages they would give me, I noticed that while I read a story it wouldn't stick to my head. I then told myself that it is going to be difficult to read passages since nothing would click in my head. There were times where the teacher would have the students and I take mini quizzes and I would hardly understand on what the reader was talking about. I would fail the quizzes due to the reason that I never gained much knowledge in reading. Articles and stories would always be tough for me to read since I didn't have many experience in reading. Therefore, half of sixth grade my teacher whom was named Ms. Soto which was an English teacher had really made reading easier for me as the semester went by. I had told her I was having difficulties in reading and she gladly helped me out. Every time I needed help with a problem from the story she was gladly there to help me. For example, the many things she would help me out with was having to stay after school for about an hour reading poems, articles and short passages from books she would give me. She also had me read magazine pages every three times a week to better my understanding of what I'm reading. I then was told that it would be a good opportunity to come in on Saturdays for reading to better my knowledge in what I'm reading. Corresponding to the readers from the reading, they can learn an author's life, thoughts, knowledge, and experience. Reading has becoming a way of life for people. Its importance to human impact is unprecedented. Now the 21st century is an era of the Internet. People, especially children learn a wide range of knowledge from the Internet. Reading from the Internet and reading the book is different from two aspects: distraction and hurting the eyes. People rely more and more on the Internet, either online or in reading. In other poor areas, "books are expensive, and many destitute parents have not attended school themselves" (Danticat 95), so reading becomes an obstacle. People should learn contentment, especially children have an excellent condition to go to school. Books are not just the passage of boring time, but also nutrients that people cannot forgot to take. Nowadays students are very conflicted in reading or giving a reading assignment by the teacher. They are unwilling or inattentive, and then they forget it in the end. "Reading was, at best, only a chore" (Rodriguez 190) leads some students read for extra credit, which is their motivation. Reading for many people, especially student groups played a large part of the role. If people can only read without understanding the true meaning of the book, it is useless. Students learn mainly knowledge from school textbooks, if the child only mastered the knowledge of the textbook, then the knowledge is limited to books, failed to allow them to experience different and touch more knowledge besides of textbook. Students should read more books outside of school, they help to accumulate vocabulary besides textbooks. Parents trust books because they are like a guardian "to keep kids from the neighborhood out of gangs" (Danticat 97) and no need to worry about Get more content on HelpWriting.net
