The document discusses stream of consciousness as a literary technique where the character's thoughts and emotions are portrayed as they experience them. It provides 5 excerpts from James Joyce's novel "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" as examples of stream of consciousness. The excerpts depict the thoughts and feelings of the young protagonist as he experiences different moments like being sick in the infirmary, playing football, and walking through the city recalling different authors and poems. Stream of consciousness allows the reader to get inside the character's mind and experience events as the character perceives them in the moment.
Beckett is believed to have said that the name Godot comes from the French "godillot" meaning a military boot. Beckett fought in the war and so spending long periods of time waiting for messages to arrive would have been commonplace for him. The more common interpretation that it might mean "God" is almost certainly wrong. Beckett apparently stated that if he had meant "God," he would have written "God". Godot: it is relatively common name in French

The full name of James Joyce (2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) is James Augustine Aloysius Joyce.
He is an early 20th century Irish novelist and poet.
Joyce is one of the pioneers of ‘stream of consciousness’ technique in novel and a new type of poetry called ‘Prose Poem’.
He is one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century also.
He used the style of ‘the examination of big events through small happenings in everyday lives’.
A presentation analysing Philip Larkin's 'Mr Bleaney', a poem about freedom, death and loss, home and isolation from his collection 'The Whitsun Weddings'
Samuel Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot' belongs to the tradition of the Theatre of Absurd. It is unconventional in not depicting any dramatic conflicts. In the play, practically nothing happens, no development is to be found, there is no beginning and no end.
A sudden feeling of knowledge that brings to light what was so far hidden and changes one’s life is called epiphany. It is a term used by James Joyce in his works : Portrait of the artist as a youngman, Dubliners.
The Waste Land poem was written by T.S.Eliot. A wasteland is someplace that's empty and desolate, with no sign of life or growth. An area may be a wasteland because of toxic materials in the soil, or due to climate conditions like strong winds.
Explains author's tone as it compares to "mood" and provides examples from young adult literature. Jane Henderson created the slideshow and I adapted this version.

Stream of Conscious in James Joyce novel: PORTRAIT OF ARTIST AS YOUNG MAN STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS
1. Conscious
Continuous of impression, thoughts, impulses either prompted by consciousness or unconsciousness
mind are recorded.
Stream of consciousness
An eclectic collection of ideas, opinions and interest.
Consciousness does not appear to itself chopped up in bits… it is nothing jointed; it flows… let us call it in
the stream of thought, of consciousness or of subjective life.
The continuous flow of thoughts in a conscious human mind, as well as a technique used in literature to
convey how a character feels or what the character is thinking while it is happening. The character's
emotions are portrayed either through hints within dialogue or actions taken by the character in certain
situations. Labeled as a special form of writing, "Stream of Consciousness" is a self told monologue.
Portrait of the Artist opens with the consciousness of a young boy, possibly a toddler, seen here:
1. “When you wet the bed first it is warm then it gets cold. His mother put on the oil sheet. That had the
queer smell. His mother had a nicer smell than his father. She played on the piano the sailor’s hornpipe
for him to dance
2. Wild spring. Scudding clouds. O life! Dark stream of swirling bog water on which apple-trees have cast
down their delicate flowers. Eyes of girls among the leaves. Girls demure and romping. All fair or auburn:
no dark ones. They blush better.”
3. The wide playgrounds swarming with boys…..footballer’s leather orb flew like a heavy bird through
the grey light. He kept on the fringe of his line….He felt his body small and weak amid the throng of
players and his eyes were weak and watery. Rody Kickham was not like that: that he would be captain of
the third line all the fellows said.
4. That was the infirmary. He was sick then. Had they written home to tell his mother and father?... He
wondered if he dies …..Then he would have a dead mass in the chapel like the way the fellows had told
him it was when little had died
5. His morning walk across the city had begun; and he foreknew that as he passed the slob lands of
Fairview he would think of the cloistral silver veined prose of Newman; that as he walked along the
North Strand Road, glancing idly at the windows of the provision shops, he would recall the dark humor
of Guido Cavalcanti and smile; that as he went by Baird's stone cutting works in Talbot Place the spirit of
Ibsen would blow through him like a keen wind, a spirit of wayward boyish beauty; and that passing a
grimy marine dealer's shop beyond the Liffey he would repeat the song by Ben Jonson which begins: “I
was not wearier where I lay”.
