Strategic Management
Workshop – a workshop for
education
The elements of strategic management for practical use in
looking at Mission Statements / Philosophy Statements as a
Marketing and PositionalTrue North.
Why do we need
strategic
management?
Using any data from clients and customers, what
challenges do you face with fact vs opinion and fact
vs perception in your schools? What do you think
causes this to happen?
Mission & StrategicVision
• A mission statement focuses on
current business activities -- “who
we are and what we do”
• Current products and school
offerings
• Parent/student needs being
served
• Value added over and above
teaching and learning
• A strategic vision concerns a
firm’s future business path --
“where we are going”
• Markets to be pursued for
student numbers
• Future teaching-learning
student focus
• Kind of school that
management is
trying to create
Who areWe?
Discuss your Mission Statement as if you were
seeing it for the first time and answer the following
questions?
What is the business stated in this (Vision) Mission Statement?
What is the core focus of the business?
How does the mission statement establish long-term direction and
sustainability for me as a customer?
What is the vocabulary of the school in the statement?
How is the Mission Statement inspirational to achieve buy in
from me as the customer?
Are we, as a school aligned with the Mission
Statement?
All: Which parts of the Mission Statement define who we are as a
brand and how can we argue and justify that we are fully aligned
with the Mission Statement?
Group 1+4: Which elements do we need to be thinking about in our
schools need to be part of our planning to support our Mission
Statement?
Group 2+3: What do we know to support our recognition and
addressing of threats & opportunities that could impact on core
business of our Mission Statement?
Three Questions … Design an Opinion Chart
• The general purpose of designing a strategic plan is to
combine the energy of organisation’s functional areas into
one focused effort to achieve superior performance.
• In essence, it answers the following 3 questions:
• Q1.Where is the organisation is at the moment?
• Q2. Where does it want to go?
• Q3. How it will get there?
Our School
•What are our responses to the three
questions? – Opinion Chart
•Write down your opinions and justify
your thoughts and reasoning.
How do we work
with the different
parts of strategic
management?
Scanning the Environment
•Think about the environment and factors
that influence / impact on our school or
area that we work in at our school.
•Add and points you may want to consider
that influence, impact or create
opportunities and present as challenges.
Strategic Management -Video
(choose a good video from UTube)
How do we respond to these further 4 key
questions when we think about our schools
or where we operate in the school
Where do we compete?
1. What unique value do we bring?
2. What resources / capabilities do we utilise?
3. How do we sustain unique value?
Definitions - Models
• Use the definitions of Strategic Management and or a diagrammatic model
to define the concepts of Strategic Management form and function.
• We will share our thinking with each other once each group has condensed
their ideas into two, one-sentence statements using these statement
starters:
Strategic Management is …
Strategic Management functions …

The Elements of Strategic Management
In your groups, analyse your area of strategic
management using the 3-2-1 strategy. (3
things you know, 2 things you found out, 1
question you still have)
Present this to the group – 2 minutes per group
Thinking for a Successful Future
• A managerial imperative exists to look beyond today and think
strategically about…
• Impact of new technologies
• How customer needs and expectations are changing
• What it will take to outrun competitors
• Which promising market opportunities related to schools ought to be aggressively
pursued
• External and internal factors driving what our school/s need/s to do to prepare for
the future
When, in a 5-year
timeline, would you
implement reviews,
audits and
improvements?
SMART GOALS
Performance Measurement
Take the school’s Mission Statement, your
understandings from today’s discussions and of
challenges and opportunities in your
environment and in groups, use one or more to
discuss the mechanics of designing a SMART
goal. Use the objectives as ‘Key Performance
Areas’ and the SMART Goal as measurable
‘Indicators’.
Action Planning
Use an Action Planning template that’s provided or a
template that you design and suits your needs to work
with colleagues to address your most pressing areas in
need of strategic thinking and align it with the school’s
Mission Statement.
