Saint Patrick´s Day
St. Patrick is the
patron saint of
Ireland.
He was born in the fourth century and
he was a bishop who introduced
Christianity into Ireland.
He used the shamrock, with its three
leaves, to explain the Holy Trinity (the
Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost)
to Irish pagans.
Shamrocks are three-
leaved clovers that
grow on the grass.
You are lucky
when you find
a four-leaved
clover!
Shamrocks, leprechauns and the
Blarney stone are the symbols of St.
Patrick’s Day.
Leprechauns are little Irish fairies. They
wear a green suit with a big hat. They have
big pots full of gold. If you find a
leprechaun, he will reveal
where he hides his pot of
gold.
The village of Blarney is in the southwest
of Ireland. It has got a very famous castle.
In the castle, there is a stone, the Blarney
Stone. If you kiss this stone, you will
receive the gift of eloquence – to have
beautiful speaking abilities.
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on
17th of March.
On this day, many people in Ireland dress
up as leprechauns with their big green
hats!
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated world-wide
with people dancing and singing in Irish
pubs, watching St. Patrick’s Day parades,
drinking ‘green’ beer, wearing green
clothes and having a good time.
Children in Ireland have a tradition of
pinching their friends who don’t wear
green on this day!
The traditional dish on St. Patrick’s Day
is beef and cabbage.
Another popular Irish food is soda bread
and potato pancakes.
Saint Patrick's feast day started to be
celebrated in 9th and 10th centuries. It
became official public holiday in 1903.
In recent years it is becoming more and
more important and famous , celebtared
world-wide.
