St.Patrick Center November 2012 Tribute Newsletter (1)
1. We remember Jacqueline Roxlau
The St. Patrick Center family remembers Jacqueline Roxlau, who passed away on February 25,
2012.
Jacqueline grew up as an only child in North St. Louis where she attended St. Alphonsus Rock
High School. Despite never marrying or having children, her life was full.
“Jackie always put others before herself. When she was your friend, you had a friend for life,” said
her cousin and closest relative, Arthur Scheer. “Jackie carried on long-distance communication
with many friends across the country. She never forgot a birthday, anniversary or holiday.”
A dedicated friend and passionate fan and season ticket holder of the St. Louis Blues, Jacqueline
loved to travel and did so often with friends. She also was an active member of her church,
Our Lady of the Rosary. Jacqueline worked for Bell Telephone Company for 42 years before
she retired. In 1992, when she was 65, she moved to the Hidden Lake Retirement Community
in North St. Louis County. She maintained a strong connection to Bell Telephone through her
involvement with the company’s retiree organization, The Pioneers.
Jacqueline was also very philanthropic. “She had picked a few organizations that she felt deserved
to be helped and she gave to them regularly,” Scheer said. Although Jacqueline donated to a
number of her favorite charities, her support of St. Patrick Center was apparent through her
generous and consistent giving to the agency.
Jacqueline donated to St. Patrick Center for more than 20 years. In 2006, she became a member
of the St. Patrick Center Cornerstone Society, which is made up of dedicated agency supporters
who have included the agency in their estate planning. Jacqueline left St. Patrick Center a
generous gift in her estate.
“She always said to me that St. Patrick Center did good work,” Scheer added.

We Remember… July 2012
In Memory of Deceased Donor Name
We remember James Henry Young
The St. Patrick Center family remembers James Henry Young, who
passed away on August 25, 2012.
Dorothy, James’ wife of 60 years and a former schoolteacher,
remembers him best as a loving husband, father and grandfather who
was passionate about his family, charitable giving and baseball.
James grew up in a family of six in South St. Louis. His parents were
devoted baseball fans who named their son after the St. Louis Browns’
First Baseman and Hall of Famer Sunny Jim Bottomley! “He loved the
Browns,” Dorothy remembers. “He went to a Browns game the night
before our wedding!”
In his youth, James belonged to St. Margaret’s Parish and was on the
St. Louis University High School first state championship basketball
team. He later joined the United States Air Force and was a pilot
during the Korean War.
James career was sales. He believed very much in the value of hard
work and enforced that value in his four children—Jim, Patrick, Julia
and Claire—by leading by example. “He always said, if we taught
them nothing else, we taught them how to work hard,’” Dorothy
recalls.
James spent 39 years as a member of Our Lady of Providence parish,
where he first became involved with St. Patrick Center’s Casserole
Program. He was a dedicated casserole volunteer for ten years. “James
believed in giving back. He never asked for any praise. He was a very
humble man.” James was even able to get his wife to volunteer, which,
she admits, was no small feat. But she, too, found the work to be very
rewarding.
James’ funeral in many ways was as joyous as the life he led. Some
of the songs played were “Amazing Grace,” “On Eagles’ Wings” and
“Be not Afraid.” James’ daughter Claire gave an uplifting eulogy and
because he loved crossword puzzles, a crossword puzzle about James’
life was printed on the back of the funeral programs.
“The whole ceremony was really joyous,” Dorothy added. “It was a
celebration of life.”

We Remember… August 2012 continued
When we first met her in 2007, she was Krista McCann. Now she is
Mrs. Ben Ferguson and this St. Patrick Center supporter and her new
husband recently gave a wonderful gift to our agency!
Krista and Ben tied the knot on May 5, 2012. The Illinois natives,
Krista from Waterloo and Ben from Columbia, decided they have
everything they need and didn’t think it was necessary for their friends
and family to “upgrade our belongings just for the sake of getting a
gift.” So they selected their favorite charities instead and asked for
donations.
“There are so many people who have nothing and we thought our
wedding would be a great opportunity to help them out,” said Krista.
“Our friends and family were very generous, so we were able to
donate more than $1,000 to St. Patrick Center, $1,000 to Sr. Thea
Bowman Grade School in East St. Louis and $500 to the Gateway
Sports Guild!”
Krista has a history with St. Patrick Center, beginning with our
employment program, McMurphy’s Grill. “While doing my college
internship downtown, I went to McMurphy’s Grill for lunch at least
once a week,” Krista said. “After learning what a great program the
restaurant is and that St Patrick Center is the organization that helps
people who are homeless, I decided I wanted to volunteer some of my
graphic design skills after college.”
From there, Krista grew her level of involvement with St. Patrick
Center. She formed a casserole team and for the past couple of years,
she and her group of women make two nights worth of casseroles
each month for the agency’s Women’s Night program.
The Fergusons, who met in college over spring break, now call
Dogtown their home. You may run into them walking their beagle
Bailey. Or you may catch Krista dropping off her casseroles at
St. Patrick Center!
Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson, for helping St. Patrick Center
build permanent, positive change!

4. Our Spirituality Statement
In solidarity with the traditional social teaching of the Catholic Church, St. Patrick Center embraces the attitude of
Jesus as servant to the poor. We espouse a spirituality that places our clients at the center of all decisions.
St. Patrick Center will work with our clients in a holistic manner: honoring their dignity and human rights; listening to
each individual; providing for emotional, physical and spiritual needs; and creating an environment that encourages all
to be the best they can be.
Working as servant-leaders, staff and volunteers will manifest an attitude of openness that is inclusive of all faith,
beliefs and cultures; humility based on truth; compassion not influenced by sentimentality or stereotype; and love that

Tell us about your someone special
We would love to hear stories about the special people you honor and
remember with your donation to St. Patrick Center. What do they mean to
you? Why do you honor them with your donation? What will you remember
about them?
Please send your stories and photos to our editor: Kelly Peach, Senior
Director of Communications, 800 N. Tucker Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63101 or
kpeach@stpatrickcenter.org. We may print in a future issue of the St. Patrick
Center Tribute!
There are many ways to honor or remember someone special. Sometimes,
it’s the simple task of writing a check from your own checkbook. Over the
years, many donors have been inspired to use their creativity and energy to
raise money for an honor or memorial. Here are some of the great ideas:
• Host a birthday or anniversary party and collect donations to St. Patrick
Center instead of gifts.
• Apply to your company’s matching gift program and increase the size of
your St. Patrick Center donation.
• Organize a Pot O’ Gold kettle drive at your business, church or school.
• Adopt a family in our Christmas Wishes program and buy Christmas
gifts to help them enjoy their holidays.
• Organize a dance mixer or themed party and collect donations for
admission.
• Enter a sports trivia team in our Sports Trivia Championship in
February.
Creative ways to honor or remember someone special
• Hold a special sales promotion at your place of business and donate a
portion of your sales to St. Patrick Center.
• Organize a golf tournament or enter a golfer five-some in our
St. Patrick’s Irish Open golf tournament in June.
• Hold a special benefit at your restaurant and donate table and bar tips to
St. Patrick Center.
• Organize a neighborhood garage sale and donate the proceeds to
St. Patrick Center.
Do you have a creative fundraising idea to share? Please send to our editor:
