job.” St. Patrick Center placed Bobbette into the
Job Experience Training (JET) program, an intense
computer skills training program that includes an
eight-week class and four-week internship with a local
employer. For her JET internship, Bobbette went with
two other JET classmates to the Veterans Business
Resource Center. She says they worked on several
projects to help the organization catch up. Bobbette
received some wonderful news a couple of days before
her JET graduation – the Resource Center offered her
a job as Client Outreach Director! Today, Bobbette is
working and grateful for the help she received from
St. Patrick Center.
Gene’s experience with
homelessness is reflective of
countless others who “couch surf ”
with family and friends during
difficult times. The honorably
discharged Army vet never spent
a night on the street, but when
his hours were cut at a tree service company and his
family home fell into disrepair, Gene and his daughter
found themselves without a place of their own. Gene
heard about St. Patrick Center at a bus stop so he
decided to come in for help. Case managers assigned
him to our Veterans GO! Green program, which
places veterans into green industry jobs. While training
in the program, Gene worked a series of jobs until his
program manager called with a great opportunity —
a full-time job at Grossman Iron & Steel! “Gene has
not missed a day and the more he learns, the more
valuable he becomes,” says supervisor Bill Ruck. “I
show up early, do my best and try to represent so
Grossman will hire more St. Patrick Center clients,”
Gene adds.Today, Gene and his daughter are happy in
their apartment and he is saving money for a pickup
truck and eventually his own lawn service equipment.
3 stories of success
We have good news to share!
Gary never wanted to be like his
father, but addiction destroyed his
dream of becoming a better father
to his four children and breaking a
family cycle of neglect. To escape
his heavy drug addiction, he
moved from St. Louis to Omaha,
Nebraska, leaving behind his children and a 20-year
relationship. While in Omaha, Gary lived successfully
without drugs for five years, but lacked the proper skills
to stay clean. After returning to St. Louis to attend a
funeral, Gary began taking drugs again that very night,
never returning to Omaha. He soon found himself
homeless. After being arrested for drug possession,
Gary was required to attend a treatment facility and
was referred to St. Patrick Center’s Shamrock Club
Day Treatment program. Although resistant at first,
Gary eventually submitted to the program and kept
his appointments. Today, Gary’s life has completely
changed for the better! He has been clean for two and
a half years. He has an apartment, a car and pays his
bills on time. Gary credits St. Patrick Center for saving
his life. “St. Patrick Center means the world to me. It
gave me back my life. It gave me hope.”
Bobbette will proudly tell you that
she served 22 years, 4 months
and 25 days in the military, with
the Missouri Air National Guard.
After she put in for retirement,
though, life presented her with a
few other challenges, including her
family business going under and a potential foreclosure
on her home. While in line at the unemployment
office, she overheard people talking about St. Patrick
Center. “I remembered I had been a donor with my
military group so I decided to stop by and see if I

chroniclesNovember 2012 EditionBuilding Permanent, Positive Change
St. Patrick Center this month kicks off the agency’s
year-end campaign and it’s an aggressive, necessary
fundraising goal: two million dollars!
According to CEO Tom Etling, the need for
St. Patrick Center’s housing, employment and health
programs continues to increase while the resources to
sustain them become more difficult to secure. “Our
previous fiscal year was a challenging one, but we are
sharpening our focus and executing plans to be an
innovative, viable organization for years to come.”
St. Patrick Center is at the center of change! Clients
building permanent, positive change, a new logo and
new building sign this year, and a 30-year anniversary
coming in 2013 – all indicators that we are here for
people who want to change their lives. The agency
has achieved successful outcomes for many people
struggling in our community, thanks to the dedicated
support of donors, board members, volunteers and
staff.
“Thanks to everyone in the St. Louis region for what
you do to help our clients,” Etling adds. “With your
support, we will continue to provide opportunities for
self-sufficiency and dignity to individuals and families
in need.”
It takes an entire community to end homelessness.
Please consider a year-end donation to St. Patrick
Center to help fund nationally recognized programs
for people who are homeless or at risk of becoming
homeless.

The CEO’s Corner
As we enter our holiday giving season, we are so
thankful for everything the St. Louis community does
to help St. Patrick Center each and every day. As we
continue to achieve greater focus as an organization,
which directly benefits our ability to serve our clients
now and into the future, your support is more critical
than ever.
St. Patrick Center is truly an organization born from
and nurtured by the St. Louis community. More than
3,000 volunteers, 500 clients who earn jobs each
year through their St. Patrick Center experience, 125
children and families who are reunited each year
through St. Patrick Center support, and the 15 clients
who died this past year struggling to make change in
their lives are remarkable evidence of this.
And the 9,000 people each year throughout our
community who are working hard at St. Patrick
Center to build permanent, positive change in their
lives are evidence of this. You may not recognize
them because they are living, working and persevering
all over our region.
Please support St. Patrick Center this holiday season.
our resources are critical to us sustaining this one-of-a-
kind, community-owned organization.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

St. Patrick Center
St. Patrick Center and the St. Louis Rams are bringing
back the impactful program, “Sack Homelessness,”
which will help aid the fight to end homelessness for
the clients of St. Patrick Center.
Through this program, Rams players and personnel
along with St. Patrick Center supporters will make a
donation every time the Rams sack an opposing team’s
quarterback throughout the NFL season. The goal is to
raise needed resources to operate the agency’s housing,
employment and health programs.
“When the Rams’ defensive line sacks a quarterback,
they lift up a St. Patrick Center family,” said Chief
Executive Officer Tom Etling. “We’re very grateful for
our continuing partnership with the St. Louis Rams staff
and players as they help our clients build permanent,
positive change in their lives.”
The Rams and St. Patrick Center have worked together
to help people who are homeless or at risk of becoming
homeless since the team moved to St. Louis in 1995.
Sack Homelessness made its debut in 1997 and raised
more than $100,000 per season that went directly to
St. Patrick Center initiatives. This year’s goal is to raise
$250,000.
A portion of the funds collected through this
initiative will help renovate the St. Patrick Center
Child Drop-In Center that provides care for
children ages six months to six years during the day while
their parents are engaged in programs.
The Rams have been a longtime supporter of St. Patrick
Center. In addition to Sack Homelessness, The Rams
have shown their support through donating money,
in-kind items, volunteering and more.
“We were honored to have the St. Louis debut of
Rams coach Jeff Fisher at our World’s Greatest Sports
Trivia Championship in February and Cortland
Finnegan at our Irish Open dinner auction in June,”
Etling added. “The Rams are amazing advocates for
people in our community who want an opportunity to
improve their lives.”

season has only a bare kitchen with no flavorful aromas,
a furnace without heat and threadbare coats that provide
little warmth. They are among the truly disadvantaged
people in our community who need our help to become

This holiday season, we turn to our faithful donors to

Great things happen every day at St. Patrick Center! We
received a thank you note from a man after his brother
recently passed away. His brother suffered from mental
illness and substance abuse that made it difficult for him
to maintain a steady job and home. He was homeless
when he came to St. Patrick Center. We provided him
with food, clothing, bus tickets and counseling. We
helped him secure disability benefits and find a safe place
to live. He kept in touch with his brother and told him
how St. Patrick Center was helping him. He passed away
this summer, not on the streets but comfortably in his
own home. The man was grateful to St. Patrick Center
for providing his brother with dignity during his time
of need.
As seen in St. Patrick Center’s Annual Report
We have good news to share!
A brother’s gratitude
Mary Pat Glauber worked for St. Patrick Center
for two years before becoming a volunteer again.
That’s right… again! She made a full circle at
St. Patrick Center! Mary Pat volunteered for
6 months doing administrative tasks before
she was hired on part time in the development
department. Now Mary Pat has gone back to
volunteer status, volunteering once a week.
While employed by St. Patrick Center, Mary Pat’s
volunteerism never left. She would help serve
lunch every Tuesday, would coordinate our Silent
Auction Crew at our World’s Greatest Sports
Trivia Championship and would help wherever
needed for our Irish Open Dinner Auction. We
are very grateful for everything Mary Pat has
done for St. Patrick Center and are extremely
blessed to have her continue on as a volunteer!
Give Thanks Giveaway: The holidays are quickly
approaching and we are still in need of many volunteers
to assist with sorting non-perishable food items for
our Give Thanks client giveaway. We are in need of
volunteers on Wednesday, November 14 from 9-11am
1-4pm and Thursday Friday, November 15 16
from 1-4pm.
Christmas Wishes: Volunteers are still needed to
assist with sorting, organizing, wrapping and distributing
donated Christmas gifts for our clients. Volunteers are
needed on Saturday, December 8 from 9:45am-12pm
and Thursday, December 13 from 1:15-6:15pm.
GED Tutor: We are in need of several volunteers
on Friday mornings from 9am-12pm to assist clients
working towards achieving their GED. Volunteers must
be proficient in pre-algebra, algebra, English, science and
history.
If you are interested in volunteering for any of the above
needs, please contact Kristen Bracken at 314-802-0681
or kbracken@stpatrickcenter.org.
