2. MyLife Story
Ceola Patillo recently of Alexandria, Virginia departed this life in the early hours of April2,2011 within
weeks of his 94tn birthday.
He was born April 24, 1923 in LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia to the late Coleman and Mattie Moss
Patillo. He was a former resident of Aliquippa and Sewickley, Pennsylvania.
There was nothing that Ceola cherished more than family. He and the twinkle in his eye, Janice, recently
celebrated their Golden Anniversary (50 years). In the "dawn" of their new day as a couple they were
blessed with two beautiful daughters. He radiated whenever he spoke of Dawn and Tracey. His love and
pride was clearly communicated in the look in his eyes and smile on his face. He was also very close to his
siblings' children; he talked to his nieces and nephews regulady. He had a sense of humor - he never
missed an opportunity to create a light-hearted moment or be on the receiving end of a joke. Quite frankly,
he never met a stranger.
He and Janice joined St. Matthews A.M.E. Zion Church, Sewickley, Pennsylvania in 1971, where he
served as a trustee, treasurer and handyman. He was a former active member in Ebenezer AME Church,
Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.
Past Master Ceola Patillo was a recent member of Melita Lodge 117, 7fr Masonic District, Prince Hall
affiliated and a 50 year member of ZionHope Lodge 72, l}s, Masonic District of Aliquippa, PA, Prince
Hall affiliated. His community activities included member and past-president of the Kiwanis Club of
Sewickley and member of Daniel B. Matthew's Historical Society.
Ceola served in the United States Army during World War II. He served in Okinawa, one of the bloodiest
battles in the Pacific. He received the Victory Medal from World War II and was also awarded the Good
Conduct medal as a result of his military service. He was granted the American Theater Ribbon (now
known as American Campaign Ribbon) for service within the American Theater of Operations and the
Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon (now known as the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon) for his service in the
Pacific Theater - there were 21 Army Corps approved for this medal.
Prior to and after military service, Ceola was employed at LTV Steel (formerly J & L Steel of Aliquippa,
PA) where he was the first black supervisor in the fourteen-inch mill. He retired in 1983 after 41 years.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of fifty years Janice, two daughters Dawn Exum (Bryan) and
Tracey; sister-inlaws Carol Haten and Evelyn Leslie; nieces Recie Moss (Homer), Melvina Patillo Cobb,
Yulanda Freeman, Andrea Sligh, Jane Powell (Joseph), Tanya Howard (Richard), Tiffany Haten, Janet
Hollis, Judy Leslie, Darselle Patillo; nephews Fred Patillo Jr., Charles Patillo (Arlene Kay), Carl Patillo,
Raymond Leslie (Patricia), David Leslie Jr. (Mona), Calvin Leslie, John Will Leslie (Mary);
granddaughters KIeo and Bryanni and great-granddaughter Khylee and a host of nieces and nephews.
He is pre-deceased by his identical twin brother Teola Patillo (Bertha) and his son Teola Patillo, Jr. and
older brothers: Willie Gilbert (Sally Pearl), Henry Gilbert (Mae Henry), Fred Patillo (Emma); half-siblings
Mary Hines, Jesse Leslie and David Leslie (Ethel); nieces Juanita Dent (William), Ruby Rocquemore
(Pecolia) and Mattie Moss (Roy).
He cherished his enormous community and spiritual family as well.

7. MissMr, BatLetMe Go
S7hen f come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites ln a gloom-filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free!
Miss me a little - but not for long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that-we once
shared,
Miss me, but let me go.
For this journ ey that we all must take
And each must go alone;
It's all, a pafi of the Master's plan
A step on the toad to home.
$7hen you are lonely and sick atheafi
Go to the friends we know,
And brrry your sorrows in doirg good
deeds.
Miss me, but let me go.
