On August 5, 2010, 33 miners in Copiapó, Chile were trapped underground for over two months when 7,000,000 tons of rock collapsed in the mine. After initial contact was lost for 17 days, rescue efforts began using a specially designed capsule to bring each miner to the surface one by one. All 33 miners survived the ordeal, with the last being rescued after 69 days underground, marking the longest anyone had ever been trapped and survived. Each successful rescue was met with widespread celebration and relief.
