Wave absorbing systems as opposed to wave breaking. A short presentation of an innovative system to absorb wave energy, to protect coasts from erosion to create ports and other protected sea areas
Breakwaters are structures that protect coastal areas from wave attack. They provide shelter for ports and harbors by manipulating sand transport and trapping sand. There are various types of breakwaters such as rubble mound, vertical wall, reef, piled, and combinations. The appropriate type depends on factors like materials availability, water depth, foundations, and costs. Vertical wall breakwaters resist loads through friction and soil bearing capacity and can fail through sliding, overturning, or local scour/erosion. Breakwaters are important for protecting coastal infrastructure from hazards while considering economics and suitable design.
This document provides information on the design of vertical wall breakwaters. It discusses different types of vertical wall breakwaters including conventional, vertical composite, horizontal composite, block type, and piled breakwaters. The document outlines the objectives of understanding hydraulic loads, preliminary breakwater design, and comparing vertical wall and rubble mound breakwaters. It also covers functional requirements, loads and resistance considerations, failure modes, and introductory design methods including the use of the PROVERBS parameter map to identify breaking wave conditions. Worked examples of breakwater types and failures are presented.
Breakwaters, jetties, and groins are coastal structures used to protect harbors and shorelines from wave energy. Breakwaters are structures that reflect and dissipate wave energy to shelter harbors. Jetties are narrow structures that project from the shore into water and provide berths for ships. Groins are structures built perpendicular to the shore to trap littoral drift and protect or build beaches. There are different types of each structure based on materials, permeability, and orientation relative to shorelines and water flow.
1. The document discusses different types of floating structures used for deepwater oil and gas projects, including tension leg platforms (TLPs), spar platforms, and semi-submersibles.
2. It reviews the design practices for these structures, focusing on TLP and spar design. TLP designs include conventional, MOSES, SeaStar, and E-TLP configurations, while spar designs evolved from conventional to truss spars.
3. Key design considerations for TLPs include strength, fatigue resistance, stability, mooring system, and production/export riser integration. Spar design drivers include heave response, length optimization, and ballast configuration.
The document discusses different types of breakwaters used to protect coastal areas from wave attack. It describes rubble mound breakwaters, vertical-wall breakwaters, and floating breakwaters. Rubble mound breakwaters are constructed from natural rubble or stone and dissipate wave energy through breaking. Vertical-wall breakwaters use a vertical wall structure and reflect wave energy. Floating breakwaters are removable structures constructed from caissons or pontoons that are anchored but less effective against long waves. The document provides details on the characteristics, uses, advantages, and disadvantages of each type of breakwater.

This document discusses different types of offshore oil rigs. There are two main categories: bottom-supported and floating vessels. Bottom-supported rigs include jack-up rigs, fixed platforms, and barges. Jack-up rigs can operate in shallow waters up to 210 meters deep. Fixed platforms are non-mobile structures used for long-term drilling, while barges are mobile but used in shallow inland waters. Floating vessels include drillships and semisubmersibles, which can operate in deeper waters up to 10,000 feet. Drillships are marine vessels modified for drilling, while semisubmersibles provide more stability in rougher conditions than drillships. Compliant tower platforms also provide stability
The document describes the seismic protection systems for the Rion-Antirion Bridge in Greece, which crosses an active seismic strait. The main bridge's continuous deck is suspended from four tall pylons and protected using fluid viscous dampers and fuse restraints connecting the deck to pylons. The dampers dissipate energy during earthquakes after the restraints fail at a predetermined force. Similar dampers and elastomeric isolators protect the approach viaducts. Full-scale tests on prototype dampers and restraints were conducted at laboratories in Italy and the US to verify the devices could withstand accelerations up to 0.48g as designed.

Wave Dispersion Technologies developed the WhisprWave modular floating breakwater system to protect coastal areas from waves and wakes. The system uses individual polyethylene modules that are connected together via cables or rods to form flexible barriers in various configurations. The Navy and Coast Guard were interested in using the technology to create maritime security barriers. The modules can be arranged into breakwaters or barriers for ports, harbors, beaches, and maritime security zones.
Tidal energy harnesses the predictable power of ocean tides and currents to generate electricity through various methods like tidal barrages and tidal turbines. Tidal barrages capture energy by trapping water behind large dams during high tide, then releasing it to spin turbines during low tide. Tidal turbines resemble underwater windmills that spin to generate power from tidal currents. While tidal energy is renewable and predictable, methods like barrages can impact local ecosystems and transportation.

This document discusses different types of breakwaters. Breakwaters are structures built along coasts to protect areas from wave disturbance. There are three main categories: rubble mound breakwaters, vertical-wall breakwaters, and floating breakwaters. Rubble mound breakwaters are constructed from natural rubble or stone and are the most widely used in Indian ports due to their cost-effectiveness. Vertical-wall breakwaters use concrete blocks or mass concrete and reflect waves without dissipating much energy. Floating breakwaters are removable structures constructed from caissons or pontoons that can be sunk or floated as needed.
This document discusses cable vibration dampers used on structures like bridges and power lines. It introduces different types of dampers including Stockbridge, ELGRA, torsional, Haro, and spacer dampers. Spacer dampers come in twin, triple, and quadruple varieties. The effectiveness of vibration dampers is explained, noting they reduce cable vibrations induced by wind, traffic, and rain which could otherwise cause damage over time from abrasion or fatigue. When attached properly, dampers decrease cable displacement amplitudes versus vibration frequency compared to an undamped cable.
The Rion-Antirion Bridge connects Greece across a strait prone to earthquakes. Its 2,252 meter long deck is suspended from four pylons by stay cables. To protect the bridge from seismic events, innovative energy dissipation systems were used, including viscous dampers and fuse restraints. Extensive testing of full-scale prototypes confirmed the design assumptions and behavior of the seismic protection system. The dampers and restraints limit deck movement during earthquakes while dissipating seismic energy. The fuse restraints fail under strong quakes, allowing the dampers to control deck oscillations. Similar systems isolate the approach viaducts from ground motions.
The presentation provides an overview of offshore platform design and types. It discusses the key components and engineering considerations for different offshore platform structures used for oil and gas exploration, including fixed platforms like jacket platforms and compliant towers, and floating platforms like tension leg platforms, semi-submersibles, spars, and FPSOs. The presentation covers topics such as water depth classifications, platform parts, installation methods, structural design considerations like loads and wave analysis, and naval architecture principles.

This document provides an overview of harbour engineering. It defines a harbour as a sheltered area for loading and unloading cargo where vessels can also be built, repaired, and launched. It describes the requirements of a good harbour, including sufficient depth for visiting ships, secure anchorage, protection from waves using breakwaters, and a wide entrance. Harbours are classified based on the protection needed (natural, semi-natural, artificial), utility (refuge, commercial, fishing, military), and location (canal, lake, river, sea). The key factors in harbour design are also summarized such as depth, size, shape, entrance width, and site selection criteria.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan spans the Akashi Strait, connecting Osaka Bay and Harimanada. It has two large towers that support the bridge deck through suspension cables. Several challenges had to be overcome in constructing the bridge, such as strong currents, deep water, and preserving the fishing area. Foundations for the towers were constructed by excavating the seabed 60 meters below water and installing large concrete caissons. Suspension cables composed of steel wires are supported by the towers and anchored on both sides of the strait. The bridge includes damping devices in the towers to counteract vibrations from wind.
This document summarizes research on the design of low-crested and submerged coastal structures. It discusses wave transmission characteristics for such structures based on scale model tests. Transmission decreases with increasing relative freeboard and decreasing relative crest width. Test results from a physical model of submerged breakwaters for a new island in Bahrain showed transmission coefficients ranging from 0.24 to 0.68 depending on structure dimensions and water level. Formulas from previous research predicted transmission reasonably well compared to measurements. Low-crested structures can provide environmentally friendly coastal protection if costs are reduced through alternative materials.
There are several types of offshore structures used to explore for oil and gas, categorized based on their geometry and behavior. Fixed platforms include steel template structures and concrete gravity structures, which are fixed directly to the seabed. Compliant structures like compliant towers and tension leg platforms are able to withstand lateral forces through deflection. Floating structures include floating production systems and floating production, storage, and offloading systems which are anchored or dynamically positioned. The type of structure used depends on the water depth, with fixed structures generally under 500m, compliant structures from 300-600m, and floating structures from 600-2500m.
Breakwaters are structures built along coasts to protect harbors, anchorages, and shorelines from wave damage. They work by reflecting and dissipating wave energy before it reaches the protected area. There are several types of breakwaters including detached, headland, nearshore, attached, rubble mound, vertical, and submerged. The appropriate type depends on factors like water depth, wave climate, and material availability. Successful breakwater design requires detailed surveys of seabed conditions, wave patterns, and material needs to ensure the structure is stable and effective.

OFFSHORE ENERGY SYSTEMS-DUAL TYPE FLOATING WIND PLATFORM-UP TO 15 MW.pdfAntonis Daskalakis
The document proposes a dual type floating wind platform and anchoring system called "Design for Installation & Operation" to effectively develop offshore wind energy in Europe's open and deep waters. The proposed platform can be transported and installed with minimal support due to its self-transportable and self-installed capabilities. It uses a spar type design for transportation and intense floatation for operation. The proposed split anchoring system and mooring legs are designed to be within the capabilities of existing vessels. The platform aims to lower costs and simplify the logistical challenges of transporting, installing and operating large offshore wind platforms.
Smart grids incorporating hydro power-reverse pumping-floating solar plants-w...Antonis Daskalakis
This document proposes integrating hydropower stations, floating solar panels, and wind turbines to create self-controlled smart grids in Greece. It outlines Greece's renewable energy goals and challenges integrating intermittent solar and wind power. The proposal is to install floating solar panels on existing artificial lakes and reservoirs to take advantage of existing electrical infrastructure and reduce costs. Combining the solar and hydropower with wind would allow controlling overall power production to match demand and provide stable, high-quality energy through "ring grids" or "virtual ring grids". Floating the solar panels offers significant potential capacity while improving panel performance and having environmental benefits compared to land installations.

This document discusses offshore fish farms based on intense floatation technologies. It describes why moving fish farms to deep waters is necessary due to various pressures. Intense floatation technology uses integrated floatation and wave absorbing systems to allow fish farms to operate in deep waters. The technology involves mathematical modeling and analysis of motion behaviors, mooring line designs, and modular floatation unit construction to exploit intense floatation bodies for offshore aquaculture.
To show how wave absorbers can be effective in protecting a sea zone from waves without disturbing the wave field around the installation as is the case with conventional gravity structures
The document proposes two alternative solutions for a floating avenue at the port of Thessaloniki, Greece. The first alternative involves developing a large marina and tower, detached from the waterfront. The second alternative involves modules attached to the dock. The estimated costs are 180 million euros for Alternative I and 100 million euros for Alternative II. Construction would take 1.5 years and pay for itself within 3 years, while creating many local jobs.
Intense floatation and its applications in offshore structures and installationsAntonis Daskalakis

The document discusses offshore fish farming using intense floatation technologies. It describes how moving fish farms to deeper waters provides benefits but challenges that require new integrated technologies. Intense floatation technology is proposed, which involves a main buoyant unit below the surface to reduce wave forces. Mathematical modeling is used to simulate intense floatation bodies in waves and calculate motions, loads and tensions. Design considerations are outlined for realizing intense floatation technologies through modular buoyant structures, mooring line blocks, and anchors that can withstand loads from all conditions.
BP Deep Horizon Oil Field. A proposal for tackling the oil leakage at the Gul...Antonis Daskalakis
The document proposes using a large anchored balloon to capture oil flowing from the damaged Deepwater Horizon wellhead underwater. The balloon would not fully seal the wellhead. Oil rising into the balloon would be pumped through a flexible pipe to a storage facility at the surface. Calculations using estimated well data show this may allow continuous capture of the oil flow. The concept requires more analysis and testing by engineers familiar with the well characteristics to evaluate feasibility. Key challenges include ensuring the pipe flow rate matches the well flow rate and preventing gas hydrate formation.

Floating W.A. in Lavrion, Greece— Pilot installation for a research project
Technical characteristics
• The system consists of standard modules with typical dimensions 12m x 3m x 4m (LxBxH) that are
connected together to form the final assembly.
• The connections can be parallel, longitudinal or oblique for the formation of a structure with the re-
quired dimensions and shape, depending on the geographical characteristics and the wave patterns of
the protected area and the desired absorption ratio. The typical breadths of the final absorber are 3m,
6m or 9m.
• The connectors are specially designed and constructed to allow the desired connections and to absorb
the vibrations that are the applied on the structure.
• The body of the wave absorber is a steel lattice type structure consisting of welded and bolted stan-
dard parts that are manufactured in fully industrialized conditions.
• In order to protect the structure from corrosion all steel parts are hot dip galvanized and additional
protection measures are applied to the boot-topping area.
• The buoyancy subassembly consists of a) fully submerged horizontal and partially submerged verti-
cal polyethylene floats filled with polystyrene and b) fully submerged polyethylene floats that can
filled with ballast water. The ballasting allows the control of the system’s draft and natural frequency
(in order to avoid resonance with the incoming waves) and the creation of excess buoyancy.
• The mooring system is composed of vertical mooring lines, which in conjunction with the excess
buoyancy allow the system to operate in areas with deep waters and be effective in absorbing the en-
ergy of a broad range of waves.
• The absorbing subassembly consists mainly of foil type units with horizontal and vertical slopes that
gradually deflect the incoming wave and absorb its energy, while at the same time cancel out the ex-
erted forces inside the structure.
• The deck of the wave absorbers consists of hot dip galvanized steel grating.
2. Basic use and equipment
The main use of the wave absorber is the creation of protected coastal and offshore areas. The standard
edition of the w.a. includes all necessary equipment and fittings, such as mooring system, steel grating
deck and ballasting system.

The advantages of the wave absorbers can be
summarized as follows:
• No permanent structures are required that in
general disturb the environment and the
natural flow of the water creating pollution Wave absorber module
sources in the inner port basin.
Wave absorber ready to be installed
• The system operates by absorbing the wave
energy instead of breaking or reflecting the
waves that lead to the creation of standing
waves outside the basin eventually causing
serious problems to vessels approaching the
port.
• Due to the wave absorption (instead of the
usual deflection) no erosion is developed in
nearby coasts, a phenomenon that is com-
mon in all permanent port structures.
• The floating wave absorbing system are ef-
fective against a broad range of waves,
unlikely floating breakwaters that are effec-
tive only in partially sheltered areas charac-
terized by waves with small height and peri-
ods.
• The natural frequency of the wave absorbers
can be adjusted according to the characteris-
tics of the installation area (water depth,
wave particulars) so that to avoid the reso-
nance of the system to the incoming waves.
This in conjunction with the absorbing units’
characteristics help to minimize the loads
applied to the structure and to abate the

• The wave absorbers do not suffer from run-
up incidents that are common in permanent
gravity and in some floating structures,
which allow the wave energy to reach the
inner port basin causing significant prob-
lems.
Additional use and equipment
A wave absorber installation can under certain
conditions be used as a wharf as is or in combi-
nation with floating docks (type THOI).
In this case, the additional equipment includes
additional mooring lines (catenaries), bollards, Absorbing subassembly
wooden deck, rubber or wooden fenders and
protective rail.
