P99 CONF We all know that distributed transactions are expensive, have higher latency and lower throughput compared to a non-transactional workload. It's just common sense that when we ask a system to maintain transactional guarantees it should spend more time on coordination and thus have poorer performance, right? Well, it's true that we can't get rid of this overhead. But at the same time each transaction defines a unit of work, so the system stops dealing with individual requests and becomes more aware about the whole workload. Basically it gets more information and may use it for new kinds of optimizations which compensate for the overhead. In this talk I'll describe how Redpanda optimized the Kafka API and pushed throughput of distributed transactions up to eight times beyond an equivalent non-transactional workload while preserving sane latency.

"Advanced performance observability and debugging have arrived built into the Linux 4.x series, thanks to enhancements to Berkeley Packet Filter (BPF, or eBPF) and the repurposing of its sandboxed virtual machine to provide programmatic capabilities to system tracing. Netflix has been investigating its use for new observability tools, monitoring, security uses, and more. This talk will investigate this new technology, which sooner or later will be available to everyone who uses Linux. The talk will dive deep on these new tracing, observability, and debugging capabilities. Whether you’re doing analysis over an ssh session, or via a monitoring GUI, BPF can be used to provide an efficient, custom, and deep level of detail into system and application performance. This talk will also demonstrate the new open source tools that have been developed, which make use of kernel- and user-level dynamic tracing (kprobes and uprobes), and kernel- and user-level static tracing (tracepoints). These tools provide new insights for file system and storage performance, CPU scheduler performance, TCP performance, and a whole lot more. This is a major turning point for Linux systems engineering, as custom advanced performance instrumentation can be used safely in production environments, powering a new generation of tools and visualizations."

Presented at LISA18: https://www.usenix.org/conference/lisa18/presentation/huynh While there are plenty of readily available metrics for monitoring Linux kernel, many gems remain hidden. With the help of recent developments in eBPF, it is now possible to run safe programs in the kernel to collect arbitrary information with little to no overhead. A few examples include: * Disk latency and io size histograms * Run queue (scheduler) latency * Page cache efficiency * Directory cache efficiency * LLC (aka L3 cache) efficiency * Kernel timer counters * System-wide TCP retransmits Practically any event from "perf list" output and any kernel function can be traced, analyzed and turned into a Prometheus metric with almost arbitrary labels attached to it. If you are already familiar with BCC tools, you may think if ebpf_exporter as bcc tools turned into prometheus metrics. In this tutorial we’ll go over eBPF basics, how to write programs and get insights into a running system.

netfilter is a framework provided by the Linux kernel that allows various networking-related operations to be implemented in the form of customized handlers. iptables is a user-space application program that allows a system administrator to configure the tables provided by the Linux kernel firewall (implemented as different netfilter modules) and the chains and rules it stores. Many systems use iptables/netfilter, Linux's native packet filtering/mangling framework since Linux 2.4, be it home routers or sophisticated cloud network stacks. In this session, we will talk about the netfilter framework and its facilities, explain how basic filtering and mangling use-cases are implemented using iptables, and introduce some less common but powerful extensions of iptables. Shmulik Ladkani, Chief Architect at Nsof Networks. Long time network veteran and kernel geek. Shmulik started his career at Jungo (acquired by NDS/Cisco) implementing residential gateway software, focusing on embedded Linux, Linux kernel, networking and hardware/software integration. Some billions of forwarded packets later, Shmulik left his position as Jungo's lead architect and joined Ravello Systems (acquired by Oracle) as tech lead, developing a virtual data center as a cloud-based service, focusing around virtualization systems, network virtualization and SDN. This seminar will outline why a new forensic container standard is needed and outline recent efforts to standardize the Advanced Forensic Format 4 forensic container (AFF4). Originally proposed in 2009 by Michael Cohen, Simson Garfinkel, and Bradley Schatz, the AFF4 forensic container supports a range of next generation forensic image features such as storage virtualisation, arbitrary metadata, and partial, non-linear and discontinuous images. Current AFF4 implementations include Rekall, The Pmem suite of Memory Acquisition tools, Evimetry Wirespeed, and Google Rapid Response. The seminar will present an introduction to the format, outline the current state of adoption within the forensic ecosystem, and announce the availability of open source implementations.

This webinar will demonstrate use of Cassandra in Storm. Suricata is a network threat detection engine using network packets capture to reconstruct the traffic till the application layer and find threats on the network using rules that define behavior to detect. This task is really CPU intensive and discarding non interesting traffic is a solution to enable a scaling of Suricata to 40gbps and other. This talk will present the latest evolution of Suricata that knows uses eBPF and XDP to bypass traffic. Suricata 5.0 is supporting the hardware XDP to provide ypass with network card such as Netronome. It also takes advantage of pinned maps to get persistance of the bypassed flows. This talk will cover the different usage of XDP and eBPF in Suricata and shows how it impact performance and usability. If development time permit, the talk will also cover AF_XDP and the impact on this new capture method on Suricata. Eric Leblond

Polymer par-ci, Polymer par-là, c'est bien beau de voir tout ce qu'on peut faire avec cette bibliothèque… Mais à la base le discours qu'on nous vend depuis des années est celui des Web Components, des briques modulaires et interopérables, suivant un standard et pouvant être mélangés comme on le souhaite pour construire des webapp comme si on faisait du LEGO. Alors, il n'est pas contradictoire de militer pour les Web Components et d'utiliser Polymer ? Ben, pas du tout ! Polymer, surtout depuis la sortie de Polymer 2, n'est qu'une surcouche de sucre syntactique au dessus du standard Web Components, et les éléments créés avec Polymer sont bel et bien des Web Components standard. De la même façon, il y a plein d'autres bibliothèques de Web Components qui ont un rôle semblable : SkateJS, SlimJS, BramJS... Chacune orientée vers une sensibilité et une façon de coder. Et bien entendu, les éléments créés avec eux se mélangent sans soucis, car ils suivent tous le même standard. Dans ce talk nous allons voir comment ces éléments Polymer sont construits à partir du standard web components, voir ce côté sucre syntactique et comprendre ce qu'ils apportent. Ensuite on verra rapidement les bases de SkateJS et de SlimJS pour finir par prouver l'intéropérabilité avec une petite application qui mélange du Web Component standard, du Polymer, du SkateJS et du SlimJS.

In the last two years I've been speaking a lot about web components and Polymer in conferences and user-groups, sharing a vision of the upcoming web-component revolution. But after these introductory talks I often got the same question: "that seems great... but does it works in Real Life?" Ah, the pesky real life question... In this talk I'm going to tackle that question in the best way I know: I'm going to tell you my experience of almost two full years web applications with Polymer in the real life, for real projects in a real enterprise with real costumers, and all the lessons I've learnt from it. You will heard why did I choose Polymer, how I dealt with the 0.x versions lifecycle, the good points and the bad ones too, how I did integrate lots of 3rd part libs into a component architecture and how now I'm able to create full fledge Progressive Web Apps using Polymer in a simple way without having to deal with the complexity of Angular/React/Whatever JS, but also how to integrate your components into those frameworks if needed.

The W3C has been working on a Web Components standard for almost three years, but it is still a work in progress. But polyfills like allows current developers to use Web Components today, and incorporate to their apps widgets from any library of web components. The best known of these libraries is Polymer, but it isn't the only one. In this talk we are going to compare Polymer, the '800 lb gorilla' in the Web Component field, with several of its lesser known competitors: Mozilla's X-Tags and Briks, and Bosonic, and even homemade ReactJS webcomponents We will build an Angular JS application where, instead of directives, we will use webcomponents done with Polymer, X-Tag and ReactJS. And we will take a look to the performances in both Chrome and Firefox.
