Agile09: The Product Manager/Owner DilemmaRich Mironov
The document discusses the relationship between product managers and product owners in Agile development. It notes that while product owners focus on backlog management and user stories for iterations, product managers handle broader strategic responsibilities like market analysis, product strategy, and coordination with other teams. The document recommends that for small, co-located teams one person can fill both roles, but for more complex products the roles are best split, with the product manager focusing on outward-facing duties and a product owner representing customers to the development team. It warns that having one person try to fully cover both roles risks the product or market needs not being adequately represented.

The document discusses the evolution of the role of pre-sales engineers from the 1970s to today. It argues that pre-sales engineers can no longer be treated as a "tactical" resource but must evolve to become "Strategic SEs" who are responsible for achieving the technical win and driving revenue. To fulfill this role, pre-sales engineers need proper training, motivation, and autonomy from sales teams to manage technical relationships with prospects and see projects through to completion. By empowering pre-sales engineers in this way, software vendors can improve sales efficiency in today's demanding technology environment.

The document discusses how ReserveX is using location-based services (LBS) to help the event ticketing industry increase revenues. It notes that a large percentage of event tickets go unsold each year, representing billions in lost revenue. ReserveX's solution aggregates data from venues to target promotions to consumers within geographical areas using LBS. This allows ReserveX to promote the right tickets to the right customers at the right time. Sample scenarios show how ReserveX's approach could significantly increase ticket and ancillary revenues for venues like Staples Center.
Location-based services provide opportunities to augment traditional advertising and PR by extending loyalty programs and bridging retail and point-of-sale interactions. Advertisers want location data to be used to increase relevance and tailor experiences rather than just show what peers think. They seek to extend existing rewards programs with new methods of earning rewards beyond transactions. Partners are needed to help make location content and analytics easy to manage across platforms, connect in-store locations to GPS, and make the experience seamless for the user.
This document discusses the growth of location-based services and spatial networking. It notes that by 2015, around 2 billion smartphones will have been purchased in the previous 3 years, enabling companies to know people's locations. Spatial networking allows real-time communication and collaboration with others nearby, even if unknown. Maintaining a personal location history will become common, and this can reveal shared interests between individuals and psychographic profiles of places. Privacy is a core concern of spatial networking.

The document suggests location based services can help businesses and governments by delivering efficiency through asset and employee tracking.
This document summarizes Forrester Research's analysis of the potential for location-based services. It identifies three categories of location-based services that marketers are interested in: mapping and search, shopping, and social. While these services show potential for growth, adoption rates are still relatively low currently. The document provides recommendations for marketers to experiment with location-based services now and look for ways to address users' privacy concerns and demonstrate how services can provide utility in addition to convenience.
This document summarizes Tyler Bell's presentation on local APIs and the local ecosystem. The presentation discussed how interconnected local resources and APIs can facilitate a more informed consumer experience. Bell analyzed several major location-based services and their APIs, noting what each reveals about the product and intentions of its creators. He concluded by contrasting the use of "razorwire" versus "datawire," advocating that APIs should focus on connecting and sharing data rather than restricting it.

Xtify is a mobile push notification platform that allows marketers to send targeted notifications to users on their mobile devices with information, offers, and prompts to take specific actions like opening an app or visiting a website. The Xtify service runs on users' devices and delivers notifications through each operating system, displaying a teaser in the notification tray that users can click for more details. Marketers can use the Xtify Campaign Manager to send relevant messages to users based on their location and past locations to deliver the right message at the right place and time.
The document discusses the opportunities for local mobile advertising. It notes that mobile usage is growing rapidly and surpassing other platforms. Local mobile searches often prompt physical actions like finding nearby stores or restaurants. The top categories for local mobile searches are retail, restaurants, and travel. Challenges include targeting users, scaling to meet demand, measuring offline conversions, and ensuring a good user experience. The document proposes solutions like location-based targeting and ads, and making all ads location-aware to address these challenges.
The document discusses MSN announcing partnerships with NBC Universal and Hearst Corporation to provide over 3,000 video clips per week from local news broadcasts across 36 US markets on MSN Local Edition beginning in early 2010. It also notes that more details are available on the MSN blog. Additionally, it discusses how people tend to stay near their location when visiting local businesses and how searching for local services is common. Finally, it provides statistics on local online advertising spending growth and poses questions about the future of hyper-local content and the role of portals.
This document discusses mapping and location-based services for local businesses. It describes how parking data can provide valuable consumer information and marketing opportunities for local businesses. Parking transactions reveal customers' locations and intentions, and this data can be used to target ads and offers to attractive demographic groups. Specific examples are given of how parking lot operators have partnered with food brands to conduct successful mobile marketing campaigns that reward customers with discounts.

The document discusses how social media, especially Twitter, can be used for local search and content sharing. It provides examples of how some companies are integrating Twitter into their local search services by allowing direct messages to Twitter accounts to receive search results or by including tweets in local search result pages. The document also shows that while social media use is growing, traditional media like print yellow pages are still more widely used among older businesses. Overall social media adoption rates among small businesses are currently around 30%.
This document discusses the potential for self-serve display advertising platforms to serve small and local businesses. It outlines barriers currently preventing small businesses from engaging in display advertising, like complexity and upfront costs. The presentation then describes how a new self-serve platform called iPromote Local aims to simplify the display ad creation and targeting process, make it more affordable, and give advertisers greater control over campaigns. It argues the timing is right for self-serve display as the industry grows and search ads become more expensive. The platform aims to aggregate small advertisers at scale by automating processes and optimizing small budgets across sites.
This document summarizes a reputation management product that helps small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) gain visibility and control over their online presence. It provides concise summaries of customer reviews, identifies inaccurate or missing listings, and notifies businesses of new online mentions and reviews through automated alerts. How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?
Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024Hiroshi SHIBATA
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.
Connector Corner: Seamlessly power UiPath Apps, GenAI with prebuilt connectorsDianaGray10
Join us to learn how UiPath Apps can directly and easily interact with prebuilt connectors via Integration Service--including Salesforce, ServiceNow, Open GenAI, and more.
The best part is you can achieve this without building a custom workflow! Say goodbye to the hassle of using separate automations to call APIs. By seamlessly integrating within App Studio, you can now easily streamline your workflow, while gaining direct access to our Connector Catalog of popular applications.
We’ll discuss and demo the benefits of UiPath Apps and connectors including:
Creating a compelling user experience for any software, without the limitations of APIs.
Accelerating the app creation process, saving time and effort
Enjoying high-performance CRUD (create, read, update, delete) operations, for
seamless data management.

"$10 thousand per minute of downtime: architecture, queues, streaming and fin...Fwdays
Direct losses from downtime in 1 minute = $5-$10 thousand dollars. Reputation is priceless.
As part of the talk, we will consider the architectural strategies necessary for the development of highly loaded fintech solutions. We will focus on using queues and streaming to efficiently work and manage large amounts of data in real-time and to minimize latency.
We will focus special attention on the architectural patterns used in the design of the fintech system, microservices and event-driven architecture, which ensure scalability, fault tolerance, and consistency of the entire system.

AppSec PNW: Android and iOS Application Security with MobSFAjin Abraham
Mobile Security Framework - MobSF is a free and open source automated mobile application security testing environment designed to help security engineers, researchers, developers, and penetration testers to identify security vulnerabilities, malicious behaviours and privacy concerns in mobile applications using static and dynamic analysis. It supports all the popular mobile application binaries and source code formats built for Android and iOS devices. In addition to automated security assessment, it also offers an interactive testing environment to build and execute scenario based test/fuzz cases against the application.
This talk covers:
Using MobSF for static analysis of mobile applications.
Interactive dynamic security assessment of Android and iOS applications.
Solving Mobile app CTF challenges.
Reverse engineering and runtime analysis of Mobile malware.
How to shift left and integrate MobSF/mobsfscan SAST and DAST in your build pipeline.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

11. Conclusion:
• Cultural Change – understanding across the org (existing businesses)
• Not just product, a strategy – apps & processes meet customer
objectives and “ways of doing business…the way they live”
• Articulate Business Value – revenue , relationship (CRM) &
commoditization
• Demystify – translate value into “business speak”
• Not an NPI – has to be part of the “new” growth strategy…New Growth
Platform (NGP).
