The stronger IT engineer, the faster his natural desire to receive the maximum amount of experience, but it is often impossible to achieve it w/o project or in some cases even company change . How to retain highly skilled professionals and make them answering: "Thank you, but I have the best job in the world!" to any recruiter request, thus avoiding hard and expensive replacement search? Unexpected sick leaves, prolonged holidays, unforeseen circumstances – creates a significant risk of failure or delays in the project. How to make sure that there is always someone to finish project no matter what, ensuring the reliability of the project in face of the customer? How to deal with situations where the short-term expertise of highly qualified specialists are required to start a new project as soon as possible? How to minimize staffing time to zero, thereby increasing profits? How to provide first-class technical pre-sales support process that any potential customer can't resist, to get even more interesting and profitable projects? Valentin Kropov, senior consultant in SoftServe's gives the answers to these questions in his speech "Competency Center: retaining experts, growing expertise, maximizing income".
Arello Mobile and Pushwoosh are two sister companies based in Novosibirsk in Siberia, Russia. 3 years ago, the workplace was stressful and the days very long. Managers and clients were constantly fighting, while teams failed to meet delivery dates. We chose to pursue Kanban to address these challenges. Adoption at Arello was relatively easy and the maturity of the implementation is now quite deep. Pushwoosh has been another story. There was skepticism and resistance. This talk describes in detail what has been achieved at Arello, a mobile application development company of around 50 people, and contrasts it with the challenges at Pushwoosh, a push notification service with a similar number of staff. Both companies have the same owners and share some common staff and resources, however, cultural reaction to Kanban was very different. Some of the latest Kanban coaching concepts including use of the Kanban Maturity Model are now being applied at Pushwoosh. There are indications this measured and thoughtful approach is likely to succeed.

Creating a Culture of Continuous Improvement at AvvoKevin Goldsmith
Avvo is a 10-year old company that is in high growth mode. In June, Kevin Goldsmith joined Avvo as its CTO after three years at Spotify. He will share learnings of how the team is bringing a lean and agile culture to this rapidly growing company. How do you scale the tools of transformation from the team to the company? In a company eager for change, how do you decide where to invest and how fast to go? Kevin will also share some of the programs that have been put into place to begin the transition from a top-down to bottom-up culture.
In this session, we want to share with you lessons learned from Legacy CFML projects that we have lead and implemented so you can learn from both our mistakes and our success.
Jumping off the hamster wheel with KanbanJulia Wester
You're running and running and running but the scenery never changes. You never actually get to your destination. So, you run faster and faster thinking that if you just try harder then you'll get there. Do you feel like you're living your life in a hamster wheel? You're not alone. Many teams face conditions that keep them feeling exactly the same way.
This presentation walks through the challenges from my 1st development manager role, but is presented as a holistic story by including the challenges and changes of the business we were embedded with. Specifically, unsustainable amounts of work, a constant barrage of emergencies, feeling forced into the percentage game, and high levels of specialization.

Being successful with Agile by Rasmus Runberg and Andrew Schumer Agile ME
Agile is a great word, it's short, suggests an athletic approach to something. It fills our minds with images of gleaming, slick perfect machines, almost "German" in its implementation. So its interesting that our experience is something far more complex and messy then this word will have you believe.
Being Agile takes commitment and hard work, work with processes and people, ensuring that there is focus on the goals throughout the organisation while it scales, this also means working with the clients to embrace this mentality.
You could say we aren't Agile, rather we are constantly increasing our Agility. This changes the idea from a perfect athlete in the Olympics, to an individual working, sweating and persevering.
It is hard, it is complicated! But, by sharing our stories we will tell you why it’s also fun and worth it.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Building a Quality Software Shop
1. My Adventure Building a
Quality Software Shop
Stephen Anderson
stephen@bendyworks.com
@bendycode @bendyworks
http://bendyworks.com
2. Why Quality?
• Quality isn’t the point
• I pursue tenfold improvements in
effectiveness
• Pursuing speed vs. pursuing quality
3. Why a Company?
• I made my wife cry
• the solution was entrepreneurship
• I left my comfort zone
• expanding that comfort zone
• Bendyworks is the eventual result of
combining passion with these
entrepreneurial experiences
11. Slack
• Systems with slack are:
• more predictable
• longer lasting
• higher quality
12. Slack
• People with slack in their workload:
• are more energetic
• don’t burn out
• have more fun
• do higher quality work
13. It’s not about me
• as the business grows, it ceases to be about the
founders
• it’s about the team
• let go of roles and responsibilities over time
• this makes your team and your business more
robust
• upside: you get to choose roles
14. Negotiation Mistakes
• letting a small project on a handshake turn
large with no contract
• under-estimating
• allowing a time and materials project turn
into fixed bid
• repeating the last mistake multiple times
15. Client Communication
Mistakes
• insufficient client communication
• continuing work in the face of insufficient
client communication
• continuing with a client who argues against
quality and our practices
17. Financial Strategies
• Quality before finances
• yes, this is a catch-22
• Have options and always being able to say
"no"
• cash reserves
• charge a bit less than maximum
• Company finances before Owner finances
20. GrowingYour Business
• A business is a financial engine
• This is very different from earning a
salary
• I’d sooner grow my business 30% than my
take home pay
• Let your business grow exponentially
• Your take home pay will grow as an echo
23. Q&A
