This document discusses reforms to the planning department in Wolverhampton that improved customer service and outcomes. It notes that previously customers were unhappy with long wait times and refusals. The reforms focused on redesigning systems with a blank slate approach, empowering staff, and focusing on enabling good development. As a result, application times were three times faster, most were approved within 30 days, and customers and staff were happier. The planning department won an award for most improved local planning authority. The reforms demonstrated that focusing on the customer experience and continual learning can improve outcomes.

Hours to Minutes: How to Save Time in Your Bookkeeping Workflow [Event]Hubdoc
Cloud technology is radically changing the way bookkeeping is done. Tasks that used to take hours now take only minutes to complete. In this presentation (brought to you by Hubdoc, Intuit QuickBooks, and Plooto), we share how you can save time when executing three of the most laborious bookkeeping tasks: document collection, bill pay, and bank reconciliation.

We only have so much time in the workday but we still do not get everything done we should. The reason can be found in our understanding of the workplace processes. Through the use of process maps and value stream maps we can gain a clear picture of where the time went.
Senior management can be quite stringent when it comes to shelling out more time and money to hire additional staff. However, when an extra hand is needed to help complete projects with effectiveness and efficiency, a little time spared, and a few bucks here and there can be the difference between doing something good and doing something great.
Given at Axial HQ for the New York chapter of Venwise, this talk details how Axial approaches building products predictably through a combination of focus, objectives, prioritization and forecasting. We call it stack.

Making robust planning decisions which can be defended to the public and at appeal can be challenging. The ‘Localism' agenda has changed some expectations. If your council would like to review, reflect and learn from some of its past decisions, we can support you on this. - See more at: http://www.pas.gov.uk/web/pas1/events/-/journal_content/56/332612/6206809/ARTICLE#sthash.e4ZUvPZf.dpuf
Business process tangles occur when a organisation outgrows its original processes and fails to manage and control the inevitable workarounds and siloed working that evolve. Eventually, the difference between any documented processes and reality becomes massive and process control is lost.
Marketing teams are starting to get more serious about project management, but wasteful practices still persist. As a marketer, your environment is very dynamic. Naturally, your project requests—and the ways you receive them—tend to also be very dynamic. Right from the start, this can get your projects off on the wrong foot. Ultimately, it hurts yoru productivity, makes your projects late, and wastes time and money.
For the sake of your team’s success—and with a little help from PM expert Hala Saleh—it’s time to get your project request intake process process in order…

Project Server - Who can benefit from it and how?SPC Adriatics
Strict quantification of value provided by some software solution is very difficult. That’s especially true in the case of software which is supposed to increase value of project management discipline whose benefits are itself difficult to quantify. Difficulty to quantify doesn’t imply that such value doesn’t exist. It only means that we need to add an extra effort to recognize it.
The purpose of this presentation is to make that extra effort and, by examining different attributes like; industry, character and size of projects, maturity of the organization – recognize patterns that lead to value realization. The key Project Server capabilities will be discussed in context of how they provide value in specific usage scenarios.
As always, realized value have to be contrasted with required investment so we will estimate the cost of EPM implementation in on-premise and cloud model.
The target audience for the presentation are all of you who believe that projects could and should be better managed in your organizations, and you have a vote on decision on using software for such an improvement.
Each of us can benefit by understanding the universal concepts of work value and waste. But to realize the benefits we must put these in regular practice through the suggested actions.

Presentation synopsis:
As the digital age evolves, data science, automation and AI will increasingly disrupt and change the way we deliver projects. As project controls professionals we know that its often not what we do but how we do it that determines our success. How do we harness new and evolving technology to meet the needs of our teams in order to achieve success? How do we adapt the technology into our current processes and our overall process strategy to maximise efficiencies?
How do we better engage with our teams to trust and go on this digital journey with us to curtail resistance?
Conference description:
How will Project Data Analytics (PDA) change project controls in the future?
We all know that one of the key elements to successful project delivery is a robust project control system. But while many of these processes are well established, the ability to make maximum use of the resulting data has often proved challenging. But this is changing.
For those involved in project controls in any way, this conference shared the latest practical uses of PDA as well as a glimpse into the future!
The conference provided insight from a range of PDA practitioners as well as feedback from a recent Delphi research study on the topic.
PDA will be key to the profession as we look forwards, make sure you help us shape it to deliver what we really need.

In April 2015 the University of Salford successfully implemented askUS, a new student-facing ‘one stop shop,’ taking just 14 weeks from project launch to service inception. Bringing together teams from three disparate locations with very different ways of working, the askUS project co-located a range of services including Finance, Visas & Immigration, Registration, Counselling & Wellbeing, Careers & Employability…and many more! The success of the askUS project was co-creating with students, and working with operational colleagues to design how the service should work, what it should look like and how it should feel. This session will explore our experiences of getting things done in just 14 weeks, including how we adapted existing building layouts and student systems, and how we changed our ways of working and dealt with any challenges.

So you want to apply for the Planning Skills Delivery Fund?
The Planning Skills Delivery Fund (PSDF) will provide £24 million over two years to local authorities to help with clearing backlogs of planning applications and prepare for the implementation of proposed planning reform. It's part of a wider programme of work designed to address the capability and capacity of planning services. Local planning authorities can apply for funding for up to £100,000, which can be used to hire additional planning officers and other specialist resources.
Planning Advisory Service recently held two events to help councils think about whether to apply and if they needed to find time over the Summer to make an application. Here is the presentation with all you need to know about the fund.

Up the Ratios Bylaws - a Comprehensive Process of Our Organizationuptheratios
Up the Ratios is a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the gap in STEM education for underprivileged students by providing free, high-quality learning opportunities in robotics and other STEM fields. Our mission is to empower the next generation of innovators, thinkers, and problem-solvers by offering a range of educational programs that foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
At Up the Ratios, we believe that every student, regardless of their socio-economic background, should have access to the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in today's technology-driven world. To achieve this, we host a variety of free classes, workshops, summer camps, and live lectures tailored to students from underserved communities. Our programs are designed to be engaging and hands-on, allowing students to explore the exciting world of robotics and STEM through practical, real-world applications.
Our free classes cover fundamental concepts in robotics, coding, and engineering, providing students with a strong foundation in these critical areas. Through our interactive workshops, students can dive deeper into specific topics, working on projects that challenge them to apply what they've learned and think creatively. Our summer camps offer an immersive experience where students can collaborate on larger projects, develop their teamwork skills, and gain confidence in their abilities.
In addition to our local programs, Up the Ratios is committed to making a global impact. We take donations of new and gently used robotics parts, which we then distribute to students and educational institutions in other countries. These donations help ensure that young learners worldwide have the resources they need to explore and excel in STEM fields. By supporting education in this way, we aim to nurture a global community of future leaders and innovators.
Our live lectures feature guest speakers from various STEM disciplines, including engineers, scientists, and industry professionals who share their knowledge and experiences with our students. These lectures provide valuable insights into potential career paths and inspire students to pursue their passions in STEM.
Up the Ratios relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers to continue our work. Contributions of time, expertise, and financial support are crucial to sustaining our programs and expanding our reach. Whether you're an individual passionate about education, a professional in the STEM field, or a company looking to give back to the community, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.
We are proud of the positive impact we've had on the lives of countless students, many of whom have gone on to pursue higher education and careers in STEM. By providing these young minds with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed, we are not only changing their futures but also contributing to the advancement of technology and innovation on a broader scale.

2. 3 YEARS AGO (BEFORE)
• Unhappy Customers – New Chief Executive
• Defence – “we are top quartile”
“we have a can do attitude”
(we don’t have not enough
resources)
(if only they understood planning)
(it’s the governments fault)
3. AFTER
• “In days where it becomes increasingly
difficult to even obtain registration of an
application, and where officers generally
appear to spend their time finding reasons to
return or refuse applications, it has been a
most refreshing experience”.
• “We deal with many Local Authorities, and it
is a great pity that more do not follow your
example.”
4. AFTER
• “It’s inspiring to see the Local Authority
being so proactive!”
• “Thanks for the efficient way you've dealt
with the application. I think other Councils
could learn a lot from WCC!”
5. AFTER
• “I just wish all of our work was within your
area. Its like drawing blood getting a
response from some authorities.”
• “Thank you for a prompt and fantastic
service I was impressed by how quick it took
to go through and the staff were very helpful
and polite.”
• “I wish all LPA’s were as efficient!”
6. RTPI WEST MIDS LPA OF THE YEAR
• Chief executive Simon Warren said “The
planning team’s experience demonstrates
the power of systems thinking in putting the
customer first and empowering employees to
provide a better service. We should all be
very proud of their achievements.”
7. Good Development in the Public
Interest
• Happy Customers
– End to end time three times faster
– Most applications approved within 30 days
– Better quality development
• No complaints
• “No” Refusals / appeals
• Enabling investment and jobs
9. How did we do it?
• Find out what’s really happening:
55% transactions with public due to system failure
134 days end to end times
50% applications not “registered / validated”
Refusals / Withdrawn
Lots of Conditions
• Lots of time feeding the IT system
• Lots of handovers / checks
10.
11. New Way of Thinking and Working
• Start with a blank sheet of paper
• Redesign system by experimenting
– Fish and Chip Shop
– Factory extension (15 new jobs)
– A ramp for Mrs Smith
• Make it normal
13. Measures
• Purpose: To enable good development in the public
interest
• In the past arbitrary targets have lead to failure
demand and poor service.
• Measures are a mechanism to allow us to
understand whether the system is working properly
and identify blockages/issues to resolve
14. Measures
• How long from ‘can I build’ to ‘I can build’ (or
‘I know why I can’t’)?
• Is the building good?
15.
16. New Way of Thinking and Working
• Successfully working – two years of experience
• Continual Improvement – by the planners
• Stability in a changing world – planners absorb
variety
• “Men of Gondor, whatever comes through that door,
you will stand and fight!” (Gandalf – Twin Towers)
• Planners thinking for themselves
• Learning – in action / reflection / CPD
