In Translations, the English campaign to replace Irish place names with English ones threatens Irish national identity. The character Yolland comes to admire Irish culture so much that he wishes to fully assimilate, though this is impossible as an Englishman. Both works examine the fluid and complex nature of personal and cultural identity during periods of colonial influence.
