friendly measures of soil sustainability among
vegetable producers in Dhading, Nepal

65.6 percent of total population is involved in
agriculture in Nepal (MoAD, 2012).
Sustainable soil management program (SSMP) was
launched successfully in Nalang and Salang VDC of
Dhading district where farmers are producing healthy
vegetables by adopting the different measures of soil
sustainability.
Measures of Soil Sustainability includes improved
farm yard manure, improved cattle sheds and urine
use, legume integration, use of bio-pesticide,
botanical pesticides, integrated plant nutrient systems,
fodder promotion for livestock, SSM-based vegetable
production etc.
Introduction
These measures tends to reduce the use of chemical
fertilizer and pesticides and but rely more on crop
rotation, crop residues, animal manure, green
manure, leguminous crops, appropriate mechanical
control to optimize soil conservation activity
(Noorivandi et al., 2009).
Soil Sustainability based agriculture is cost
effective, affordable and does not require
expensive technical investment but provides more
employment opportunity.
Soil fertility is a major determinant of increased crop
yields in Nepal.
The adoption of soil sustainability measures offers
practical solutions to sustainable soil fertility
management.

Study concluded
that adoption of

sustainability
among vegetable
farmers had
positive impact
on household
income,
farming system,
environment
protection and
use of local
resources.
Although
farmers in the
study area have
some traditional
knowledge about
the use of
various practices
and their
contribution to
soil fertility
management,
detailed
knowledge on
preparation and
use of such
practices was
lacking.
Comparing with
conventional
system, study
concluded the
positive
economic and
environmental
benefits of
adopting eco-
friendly
measures of soil
sustainability in
the study area.
Farmers
indicated high
cost of house
construction for
dung storage,
lack of
improved cattle
shed, lack of
detailed
knowledge and
unavailability
of raw
materials were
the major
constraints
limiting the
adoption .
• Instead on chemical fertilizers, subsidy should be provided for the farmers on the use of soil
sustainability measure and infrastructure development.
Subsidy
• should be provided by the Department of Agriculture, Government of Nepal as these
practices are complex to understand and use.
• Varietal change had showed positive impact on production but the farmers should be
provided guidelines on detailed cultivation method of such newly adopted varieties.
Technical guidance
• Extension of the technology on diversified crops on different districts of the country
should be done.
• Trainings, workshops, demonstrations, visits, seminars etc. should be formulated and
made implementation from Government level.
Extension and Exploration
• After the adoption of measures, increased in livestock number had shown positive sign for
its commercialization in the future along with organic vegetable production.
Commercialization
• As this study is more concerned on status and challenges, in-depth analysis about the effect
of these practices on adaptation to climate change is urgent.

  • 2. Nepal; Latitudes:26022’'North-30027’'North, Longitudes: 80004’'East- 88012’'East, Area: 1, 47,181 sq. Km. 65.6 percent of total population is involved in agriculture in Nepal (MoAD, 2012). Sustainable soil management program (SSMP) was launched successfully in Nalang and Salang VDC of Dhading district where farmers are producing healthy vegetables by adopting the different measures of soil sustainability. Measures of Soil Sustainability includes improved farm yard manure, improved cattle sheds and urine use, legume integration, use of bio-pesticide, botanical pesticides, integrated plant nutrient systems, fodder promotion for livestock, SSM-based vegetable production etc. Introduction

These measures tends to reduce the use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides and but rely more on crop rotation, crop residues, animal manure, green manure, leguminous crops, appropriate mechanical control to optimize soil conservation activity (Noorivandi et al., 2009). Soil Sustainability based agriculture is cost effective, affordable and does not require expensive technical investment but provides more employment opportunity. To explore status and challenges on adopting different practices of soil sustainability among the adopters. Summary and Conclusion Study concluded that adoption of eco-friendly measures of soil sustainability among vegetable farmers had positive impact on household income, farming system, environment protection and use of local resources. Although farmers in the study area have some traditional knowledge about the use of various practices and their contribution to soil fertility management, detailed knowledge on preparation and use of such practices was lacking. Comparing with conventional system, study concluded the positive economic and environmental benefits of adopting eco- friendly measures of soil sustainability in the study area. Farmers indicated high cost of house construction for dung storage, lack of improved cattle shed, lack of detailed knowledge and unavailability of raw materials were the major constraints limiting the adoption .
  • 15. • Instead on chemical fertilizers, subsidy should be provided for the farmers on the use of soil sustainability measure and infrastructure development. Subsidy • should be provided by the Department of Agriculture, Government of Nepal as these practices are complex to understand and use. • Varietal change had showed positive impact on production but the farmers should be provided guidelines on detailed cultivation method of such newly adopted varieties. Technical guidance • Extension of the technology on diversified crops on different districts of the country should be done. • Trainings, workshops, demonstrations, visits, seminars etc. should be formulated and made implementation from Government level. Extension and Exploration • After the adoption of measures, increased in livestock number had shown positive sign for its commercialization in the future along with organic vegetable production. Commercialization • As this study is more concerned on status and challenges, in-depth analysis about the effect of these practices on adaptation to climate change is urgent.
