1. Statement of Purpose
Nilanjan Dey
When I envision today’s fast-paced world, the one thing that stands out is the huge amount of
data that governs the day to day mechanism of this era. The enormous Potential of harnessing
of data and the profound impact that it can have on deriving intelligent insight is overwhelming,
to say the least. My experience as an Application Development Associate at Accenture along
with my inclination towards data analytics and its deep impact in applications relating to
business, industry, social life and academia, compelled me both intellectually and professionally
to pursue a career in data analytics.
I have 2 years of experience in Accenture, I am Salesforce Developer and have been very
fortunate to worked for clients from diverse fields like telecommunications, Health and Audit
sector. While working on projects from diverse industry sectors, I have developed functionality
using Lightning component, Apex and Force.com.
Exposure to the Salesforce production environment helped me gain first-hand knowledge about
vast quantities of data in finance, sales and distribution modules of any business.
Report generation and data validation in Salesforce.com requires strong data consolidation
techniques and analytical skills, and my firsthand experience on various reports made me
realize how insightful and informative this vast amount of data is, if critically observed and
properly analyzed, can be to any industry. Data Analytics has always appealed to my inquisitive
being.
In Accenture, I have got the opportunity to learn from some of the best minds in the industry
on Big Data, Cloud Platforms etc. Under their mentorship, I realized the huge potential of data
and its analysis.
It was these pro-con discussions and stimulating knowledge sessions that drove me to peruse
relevant programs and made me finalize on the master’s program in Data Science at the
University of Manchester “Machine Learning and Statistics”, “Text mining”, “Application in Data
Science” etc. courses will set the right tone for my holistic learning experience.
In addition to the curriculum, Manchester provides opportunities to connect with the industry.
Moreover, UK is known for its world class education, UK qualification open doors to great
career. The university has graduated many students including Nobel laureates, key researchers and
the recipients of Oscars and Emmy. I believe that University of Manchester MSc program will
provide me a platform to learn and grow professionally giving me the necessary exposure and
laying a significant milestone in my career path.
2. My tryst with analytics started in undergraduate, as a student of engineering at Kalinga
Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT). I specifically opted for math courses and completed
training in Python out of my curiosity in data analytics.
Moreover, I have successfully carried out challenging projects like ‘Digital First Aid Box’,
combining concepts of, microprocessors and IOT and ‘Sensor Based Home Automation’, where
my team and I developed our own idea into a plausible working model, involving MATLAB,
Microprocessor, Microcontroller, Python.
I endeavored to go out of my curriculum and took online courses like "Machine Learning” and
“Internet of Things” offered by Coursera. These exercises enhanced my understanding of the
utility of business analytics in our day to day operations as well as its growing relevance in
today's businesses. Also, Hans Rosling’s TED talk piqued my curiosity and helped me deeply
appreciate this realm of information science and business intelligence.
I was also involved with Technology magazine articles where I wrote and helped Mr. Sanjay
Bakshi 'Digital Head - Shell India' an article on Artificial Intelligence which got published in CIO
Advisor magazine as AI: the next Gen Solution Title.
Apart from my academic and professional endeavors, I am also a sportsman. As a sprinter, I had
helped my alma mater win numerous events. And represented my hostel in football team every
year during college, along with sports I was also indulge with MUNs, participated and
represented different counties in MUN, I have keen interest towards Quiz and Debates and also
been part of different events from school.
Hailing from a military background School, I have witnessed altruistic activities in plenty.
Inspired by the same and cherishing the joy derived on helping the needy, I have been involved
in camps and rendering financial assistance to the poor and the differently abled.
After graduating from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, I aspire to work as a Data
Analytics. The world renowned and experienced faculties, and opportunities to develop
contemporary practical skills coupled with an active industry interaction, University of
Manchester will prove to be a cornerstone for my professional career.
