Making It Cout: Using the 2010 US Census in Grant Writing
The decennial census determines the allocation of hundreds of billions of federal program dollars. Federal agencies and private entities use data on race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, age, and disability to determine where disparities exist and where community groups could assist. This workshop brings together professionals working to collect data for the census to discuss recently analyzed data with community groups searching for information to support program objectives and goals.
Conditions of Health across America
Melissa Thompson conducted research to determine factors that influence health. She analyzed data from the 2006 General Social Survey on race, income, region, and health. Her findings showed that whites and those with incomes over $50,000 reported better health. Southeasterners also reported better health than those in the Southwest. Her conclusions suggest focusing community outreach on healthier neighborhoods and education to improve conditions for lower-income minorities.

3) Community colleges provide open access, remedial education, workforce training, and transfer pathways. Nearly half of all baccalaureate recipients attended a community college first. They work closely with business and industry to align training with job needs.

Pend Oreille County in Washington state faces several health issues related to its rural poverty. The median household income is below the national average and over 15% of residents live below the poverty line, especially female-headed households. This poverty contributes to higher rates of child abuse, lack of health insurance, and other health problems. Access to healthcare is also limited due to the county's rural nature and distance from major hospitals. To help address the issue of child abuse, the document recommends implementing the evidence-based Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) model, which has been successful in other similar low-income rural populations by enhancing parenting skills.
Income and Health
1) The study found that 24.3% of deaths in Virginia from 1990 to 2006 could have been prevented if the entire state had the same mortality rates as the most affluent areas. This represents over 220,000 avertable deaths.
2) The proportion of avertable deaths was highest in rural, non-metro areas and areas with lower population density and household income. Counties with the highest percentages of avertable deaths included Charles City, Prince George, and Dinwiddie Counties.
3) Improving social conditions like income and education across Virginia could enable more areas to achieve the health advantages and lower mortality rates seen in northern Virginia.
