High Cost and
Complexity
• MDM software buyers can no longer justify the multi-
million-dollar, multi-year “big bang” implementations of the
past
• While strategic benefits will always eventually carry the day,
documentable business value must be achieved in a few
weeks to three months to sustain the program further
• Solutions with more reasonable license costs can free up
funds for implementation services, whether vendor or SI
• Lack of integration of multiple solution components
continues to delay or prevent success in many programs

Shift in Revenue Gains
and Market Share
• Smaller best-of-breed vendors are now routinely
experiencing revenue gain percentages of high single to
double digits
• Megavendors are now moving through mid-single digit
percentages – one has begun to contract – another has
functionally removed itself from the market
• This trend will continue and become more pronounced as
smaller vendors continue to gain implementation
experience across industries, organization sizes and
geographies
• Real possibility that megavendors may eventually no longer
be the dominant revenue earners in MDM

Cloud Adoption
Gaining Momentum
• Gartner has extrapolated the cloud adoption reported by its
vendor-submitted Magic Quadrant references to the entire
market – a near-impossible increase to 57% in 2018 from
24% for 2017 and 19% in 2016
• It is far more likely that the submitting vendors favored
their cloud-based customer organizations as references, as
they do not report the typical on-premises MDM
implementation and configuration issues
• There is certainly a shift to the cloud that is gaining some
momentum, but these gains appear to be continuing to
grow modestly
• MDM vendors that are microservices-based and fully
containerized will have an advantage in flexibility here as
they will be able to more flexibly support cloud, on-
premises and hybrid environments when integrating with
sources and targets, and optimizing workloads
