This document discusses computing the point estimate of a population mean. It provides examples of taking random samples from a population and computing the mean of each sample. Six dwarves each took random samples of bottles and computed the mean of each sample, finding means ranging from 497.1 to 498.4. I collected the data on the time it takes to cook meals each day. I have collected the data for 10 consecutive days. The independent variable in this study is the number ofday and the dependent variable is the meal cooking time. Each day, I would take the reading twice; once in the morning while we cook our lunch and once in the afternoon while we (myself and my wife) cook our dinner. We shall use a stopwatch to note the times. We shall start the stopwatch at the moment we start cooking the meals and stop it the moment when we finish cooking. Each time we shall note the reading in the stopwatch. At the end of the day, we shall add up the times that we have altogether spent cooking on that particular day. This will be our data for a single day. We shall continue this process for 10 consecutive days. At the end of the experiment, we shall have 10 observations or data points.
The time spent to cook meals each day can be considered as an independent event as the time spent to cook meals on a particular day is, in general, not affected by the time spent in cooking meals on some other day. We expect the data to be normally distributed with a mean and standard deviation of meal cooking times. As with normal distributions, we expect the distribution to resemble a bell-shaped curve. Arrival of guests in the house can significantly increase the meal cooking times and this can impart positive skewness in the data distribution. Likewise, eating outs during the weekends can significantly decrease the meal cooking times and this can impart negative skewness in the data distribution.
At the end of the experiment, we shall be able to calculate the experimental probability of spending a particular time in cooking meals on a day.
We need to increase the number of days from 10 to about 30 to 35 in order for the data to provide a valid representation of the time spent in cooking meals on a day. This is because 10 data points makes too small a sample size for any valid representation. We need to increase this sample size or the number of days of collecting the data, in order to make any valid inference based on the results of the experiment.
The assignment is to collect quantitative data for a minimum of 10 days from ONE of your daily activities. Some examples of data collection include:
· The number of minutes you spend studying every day.
· The time it takes to cook meals each day.
· The amount of daily time spent talking on the phone.
· The amount of time you drive each day.
In a paper (1–3 pages), describe the data you are going to collect and how you are going to keep track of the time. Within the paper, incorporate the concepts we are learning in the module including (but not limited to) probability theory, independent and dependent variables, and theoretical and experimental probability. MATT JONES: As its name implies, the independent samples t-test has the
assumption of the independence of observations. But that's not always the case.
Sometimes we take multiple observations of the same unit of analysis, such as a
person, over time. In this case, we'll use a paired sample t-test, sometimes
referred to as the dependent sample t-test. Let's go to SPSS to see how we do
this.
To perform the paired sample t-test in SPSS, we once again go to Analyze,
Compare Means, and down to the Paired Sample T-test. SPSS doesn't require
much information here;; only the pair of variables of which we would like to test.
We have a simulated data set here for statistical anxiety of students. Students
were provided with an instrument that measures their anxiety around statistical
topics on a number of different constructs-- teachers, interpretation, asking for
help, worth, and self-conceptualization.
They were given the test at the beginning of the class and at the conclusion of a
class. Hence, why in the value labels we see pre-test and post-test. As a teacher,
I might have some interest in determining whether students felt more comfortable
with me or had lowering anxiety over time. This is perfect for a paired sample t-
test. To perform this paired sample t-test, we'll go to Analyze, Compare Means,
the Paired Sample T-test.
SPSS doesn't ask for much information;; only the pair of variables of which I
would like to test. In this case, teacher pre-test and teacher post-test. So this is a
classic before and after. The first piece of output I obtain from the paired sample
t-test are some descriptive statistics, specifically around the pairwise comparison
I'm looking at, which is the teacher subscale pre-test and post-test.
I see that there is mean on the pre-test of 17.32 and on the post-test, an 18.44.
So it appears, at least from a descriptive sense, that there is a higher mean on
the post-test than the pre-test. On the instrument, higher scores on an item or the
subscale indicate higher levels of anxiety for that specific attitude. Except for this
specific subscale, fear of statistics teachers, where higher scores actually
indicate lower levels of anxiety.
So if post scores are higher than pre scores, that means on average, students
feel lower levels of anxiety and more positive attitude about their statistics
teacher. I can see here, at least from a descriptive sense, that that appears to be
the case. But from the sample, I am performing a test of statistical significance.
Next to the mean, I'm provided with the sample size 25-- 25 observations pre-test
and 25 observations post-test, all the same person-- the standard deviation for
the pre-test and the post-test, and the standard error of the mean. ...

Methodology
The research team conducted the study through an iterative research process that first clarified the research question and developed the hypothesis statements. The research design was then established by outlining the data collection and sample design. Data collection, preparation, analysis, and interpretation were then conducted.
Sample
The total population being tested was all Stop-N-Shop customers; however, the target population were those men and women making hot food purchases. To address the objectives of the study, as stratified random sample of men and women that made hot food purchases was collected; customers who were not making hot food purchases were excluded, as they did not meet the criteria for the research. The study data was collected by observing customers as they completed their purchases of hot food items; the total sale in dollars and the sex of the customer were recorded.
In order to calculate the proper sample size, a pilot study was conducted over a 30-day period. The pilot study results were used to estimate the sample size based on a parameter estimate of the population mean(McClave, Benson, & Sincich, 2011, pp. 297-299). To perform the paired sample t-test in SPSS, we once again go to Analyze,
Compare Means, and down to the Paired Sample T-test. SPSS doesn't require
much information here;; only the pair of variables of which we would like to test.
We have a simulated data set here for statistical anxiety of students. Students
were provided with an instrument that measures their anxiety around statistical
topics on a number of different constructs-- teachers, interpretation, asking for
help, worth, and self-conceptualization.
They were given the test at the beginning of the class and at the conclusion of a
class. Hence, why in the value labels we see pre-test and post-test. As a teacher,
I might have some interest in determining whether students felt more comfortable
with me or had lowering anxiety over time. This is perfect for a paired sample t-
test. To perform this paired sample t-test, we'll go to Analyze, Compare Means,
the Paired Sample T-test.
SPSS doesn't ask for much information;; only the pair of variables of which I
would like to test. In this case, teacher pre-test and teacher post-test. So this is a
classic before and after. The first piece of output I obtain from the paired sample
t-test are some descriptive statistics, specifically around the pairwise comparison
I'm looking at, which is the teacher subscale pre-test and post-test.
I see that there is mean on the pre-test of 17.32 and on the post-test, an 18.44.
So it appears, at least from a descriptive sense, that there is a higher mean on
the post-test than the pre-test. On the instrument, higher scores on an item or the
subscale indicate higher levels of anxiety for that specific attitude. Except for this
specific subscale, fear of statistics teachers, where higher scores actually
indicate lower levels of anxiety.
So if post scores are higher than pre scores, that means on average, students
feel lower levels of anxiety and more positive attitude about their statistics
teacher. I can see here, at least from a descriptive sense, that that appears to be
the case. But from the sample, I am performing a test of statistical significance.
Next to the mean, I'm provided with the sample size 25-- 25 observations pre-test
and 25 observations post-test, all the same person-- the standard deviation for
the pre-test and the post-test, and the standard error of the mean. ...

Methodology
The research team conducted the study through an iterative research process that first clarified the research question and developed the hypothesis statements. The research design was then established by outlining the data collection and sample design. Data collection, preparation, analysis, and interpretation were then conducted.

The total population being tested was all Stop-N-Shop customers; however, the target population were those men and women making hot food purchases. To address the objectives of the study, as stratified random sample of men and women that made hot food purchases was collected; customers who were not making hot food purchases were excluded, as they did not meet the criteria for the research. The study data was collected by observing customers as they completed their purchases of hot food items; the total sale in dollars and the sex of the customer were recorded.
In order to calculate the proper sample size, a pilot study was conducted over a 30-day period. The pilot study results were used to estimate the sample size based on a parameter estimate of the population mean(McClave, Benson, & Sincich, 2011, pp. 297-299). The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students.
