2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. What Is Stand Your Ground?
• A stand-your-ground law is a type of self-defense law that gives
individuals the right to use deadly force to defend themselves without
any requirement to evade or retreat from a dangerous situation. It is
law in certain jurisdictions within the United States.

4. The General Firearms Laws of The State of
Texas:
• Generally illegal to carry a handgun outside of a person’s
own premises. However, a person may carry, either open or
concealed, in a non-threatening or alarming manner, a
shotgun or rifle.
5. The Concealed Handgun Laws of The State of
Texas:
• Texas allows concealed handguns to be legally carried
with a CHL issued by Texas or by a state which Texas
recognizes. If a license holder is in possession of a
concealed handgun, they must produce their
concealed weapons license along with another valid
identification upon the demand of a police officer.
6. The State of Texas Justification For the Use of
Force & Deadly Force:
• A person may use force against another to the degree
the person believes that it is reasonably necessary to
protect themselves or a third person from another’s
unlawful use of force.
7. Unique Firearms Laws of Texas:
• Texas recently enacted a law which states that people have a
right to keep firearm in their locked motor vehicle while on
their employers’ parking areas.
• some employers are excepted from this law, include school
districts or charter schools, chemical manufacturers/oil
refiners that manufacture, use, transport or store hazardous
materials
• employees do not have the right to store loaded firearms in a
vehicle owned or leased by the employer.
8. Why Does It Matter?
• Gun ownership globally: US ranks
FIRST, ahead of Yemen
• From an international perspective,
the US clearly has a problem despite having less than 5% of the
world's population, it has roughly
35-50% of the world's civilianowned guns.
• The United States has 88 firearms
per 100 people!
9. What all those guns mean – Sympathy for the shooter
• On December 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot twenty children and six adult staff
members in a mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the village of Sandy Hook in
Newtown, Connecticut.[5][6] Before driving to the school, Lanza shot and killed his mother Nancy
at their Newtown home. He committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.
• July 20, 2012, a mass shooting occurred inside of a Century movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. A
gunman set off tear gas grenades and shot into the audience with multiple firearms, killing 12
people and injuring 70 others.
• Michael Dunn shot and killed Davis, unarmed, because the music coming from his car was too
loud. Dunn claimed he saw something like a gun in the vehicle, exonerated of first degree murder.
• George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin on February 26, 2012. Martin was
pronounced dead minutes after police arrived. Zimmerman was later acquitted of second degree
murder citing self defense as reason for death.
11. Resume the "Duty to Retreat” Law in Texas
• You are not allowed to resort to deadly force in self-defense if it is
possible to safely avoid the risk of harm or death (by running away,
for example). If that is not an option and facing serious harm or
death, then you would be authorized to use deadly force in self
defense.
• Take out the amendment to the 1976 Texas law and include wording
for retreat.
12. Compromise Resolution
• Does not mean society should ban guns entirely but restrict the
amount of guns and high capacity magazines a person should own.
• Government officials must have knowledge of the subject and come
to the table with an open mind and be ready to compromise, as
should the pro-gun party.
• More detailed background screening on assault rifles
• Tax the sale of hi capacity magazines higher than the normal federal
tax, that way the government would be making more money to repay
the country’s debt, and keep the magazines in the hands of
responsible guns owners.
13. What Gun Control Will Do
Other nations have reacted quickly to impose new and stricter gun laws when rampages occur.
Australia - In 1996, lone gunman, killed 35 people with a spray of bullets from semiautomatic weapons.
Within weeks, the Australian government was working on gun reform laws that banned assault weapons and
shotguns, tightened licensing and financed gun amnesty and buyback programs.
2010 that firearm homicides in Australia dropped 59 % between 1995 and 2006. In the 18 years before the
1996 laws, there were 13 gun massacres resulting in 102 deaths, with none in that category since.
Scotland - 16 children and their teacher were killed by a gunman in Dunblane, Scotland, in 1996, the British
government banned all private ownership of automatic weapons and virtually all handguns. Those changes
gave Britain some of the toughest gun control laws in the developed world on top of already strict rules.
Hours of exhaustive paperwork are required if anyone wants to own even a shotgun or rifle for hunting. The
result has been a decline in murders involving firearms.
Japan - 11 people were killed with guns in 2008, compared with 12,000 deaths by firearms that year in the
United States — a huge disparity even accounting for the difference in population.
14. Conclusions
• Proponents and Opponents alike want the same goal. Less
people harmed or killed by firearms. Gun control is a band
aid to the problem. Gun control is ultimately a people
problem. Stricter gun control will help to curb an ever
increasing problem of violent crime in this country.
