Seven Simple Reasons to Use AppFuse
AppFuse is an open source project/application that uses best-of-breed Java open source tools to help you develop web applications quickly and efficiently. Not only does it provide documentation on how to develop light-weight POJO-based applications, it includes features that many applications need out-of-the-box: authentication and authorization, remember me, password hint, skinnability, file upload, Ajax libraries, signup and SSL switching. This is one of the main features in AppFuse that separates it from the other "CRUD Generation" frameworks like Ruby on Rails, Trails and Grails. AppFuse is already an application when you start using it, which means code examples are already in your project. Furthermore, because features already exist, the amount of boiler-plate code that most projects need will be eliminated.
In this session, you will learn Seven Simple Reasons to Use AppFuse. If you don't use it to start your own projects, hopefully you will see that it provides much of the boiler-plate code that can be used in Java-based web applications. Since it's Apache Licensed, you're more than welcome to copy/paste any code from it into your own applications.

Abstract
There is a lot of debate whether to use Serverless or Kubernetes to build cloud-native apps. Both have their advantages and unique capabilities which developers should take into consideration when planning new projects. We will throw some light on the topics ease of use, maturity, types of scenarios, developer productivity and debugging, supported languages, DevOps and monitoring, performance, community and pricing. Cloud-native architectures shift the complexity from within an application to orchestrations of Microservices. Both Kubernetes and Serverless have their strengths which we will discuss. Besides the core development topics, developers should also understand operational aspects how complicated it is to maintain your own systems versus using managed platforms.

We’ll show OPNFV performs open source NFV testing, including: methodology; mapping to ETSI NFV use-case/s; open source project integration; testing dashboards; Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD); and testing acceleration. We’ll provide an overview of the OPNFV Pharos Community Test Lab infrastructure and the new Pharos Lab-as-a-Service to run a test deploy of OPNFV and try it out on your own. We’ll also give an overview of how OPNFV is working together with OpenStack Community as part of its Cross Community CI (XCI) effort in order to provide means for OPNFV developers to work with OpenStack master branch, reduce the time it takes to develop new features and test them on OPNFV Infrastructure, and more.

Microservice Development Using Telepresence
Telepresence allows developers to run microservices locally while still connecting to a Kubernetes cluster. It creates a bi-directional tunnel between the local development environment and the cluster. This allows the local process to access environment variables and DNS from the cluster pod. As a demo, the presenter shows running a front-end service locally using Telepresence while it connects to backend services in the cluster. However, Telepresence is still maturing and has some limitations like only supporting swapping one service and potential network and DNS issues.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
