Erik Erikson developed a theory of 8 stages of human development from infancy to late adulthood. Each stage presents a developmental crisis where the individual needs to develop certain competencies to progress successfully. The stages include trust vs mistrust in infancy, autonomy vs shame and doubt in early childhood, initiative vs guilt in preschool years, industry vs inferiority in school age, identity vs role confusion in adolescence, intimacy vs isolation in young adulthood, generativity vs stagnation in adulthood, and integrity vs despair in late adulthood.
