ST PAUL'S ANGLICAN CHURCH BEACONSFIELD TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST 10 NOVEMBER | 2019 NEWSLETTER PARISH UPDATES THE LATEST FROM OUR PARISH COMMUNITY NOTICES FOR THIS COLUMN CAN BE EMAILED TO ZARA IN THE OFFICE BY 7PM EACH THURSDAY. We are planning to refurbish the office over the Christmas break! Please let Zara or Maureen know if you have a rug to give away, or just drop it at the office - if we end up with many rugs I'm sure we can find a home for them with Just Manna! If you or someone you know is selling a car (manual or automatic) please let Zara know in the office. She is looking for a set of wheals! Zara will be not be working on Wednesday 13th November to sit a university exam. Julie will be holding the fort that day instead. Many thanks to Julie! HALLOWE'EN A POEM BY RUARI JACK HUGHES 31 OCTOBER 2019 Who is this comes walking through my dreams Invading sleep on this mournful night What apparition is it which looks so familiar And look there, others trawl behind Similar in form, different in appearance Do they come for me or do they merely pass I start up, I’m not asleep, though also unawake For this night is a festival when spirits Go a-wandering, traversing the times Between then and now, the season is shifting It is the eve when all hallowed souls Move across the land, betwixt and between In the northern lands, the time is ominous Descent into Winter, darkness falling Hallowe’en, pumpkin heads, trick-or- treat As the seasons turn over, dark and light in balance On this one night and one day, all are hallowed All the saints, all the martyrs, all of us Yet not here, not in this great southern land Not in this vast, mysterious, lonely territory Deep in this land are other dreamings Founded in the time when the worlds began Flaming out from the void at the word of God And when the legends were birthed, stars fell Making witness all is in all, and all is holy Spirits also walk this country, also hallowed Here they trail the sacred close with them Trekking across the desert sands Walking quietly through the great forests Skimming the coast on flimsy craft They follow the songlines curling, winding And wending, north to south, west to east Sun and moon cross all the world In this corner the days are lengthening Each morn, thanking God, I wake into the new day The dreams of the night vague reminiscences But on this special night, this once a year night Who was that came walking in, and the others All hallowed souls touching my mortality AS READ AT THE SERVICE ON SUNDAY 3RD NOVEMBER 2019

We wish to especially thank Michael Jessup for planning and conducting Mum’s funeral service; and Joan Jessup for her understanding and attention to every detail. We appreciate the time and effort contributed by so many people in preparation and setting up before the service, and dismantling afterwards. In particular we want to thank Kim for the design and production of the glorious floral tribute, Janice and the choir for adding beautiful music and excellent voices to the service, and all involved in the provision and preparation of morning tea. Mum’s association with St Paul’s commenced even before she was born and lasted her entire 89 years. Over the years she contributed in many ways, and, in return, received a sense of purpose and the fulfilment of giving. Her reward was a strong faith as well as the friendship and love she received from her fellow parishioners. The expressions of sympathy we received from you mean a great deal to us. We can think of no more appropriate send-off for Mum than the one the St Paul’s community gave her. Thank you all, very much. Best regards, Alan Pearson

PARISH GARDEN WORKING BEE All members of our wonderful community are invited to give a helping hand to our parish grounds on Saturday 7th December. In addition to some poetry on the Theme with Professor Christopher Wortham, Cathedral Scholar. The day continues after lunch from 12.45pm–2pm with The Word of Life, Contemplative Prayer and Celtic Prayers — no enrolment necessary for this part — gather in the Upper Burt Memorial Hall by 12.45pm. Venue: Cathedral Square on St Georges Terrace, Perth When: Wednesday 13th of November, 9.30am–2pm Cost: $12 Enrolments by Monday 11 November 9325 5766 or spirituality@perthcathedral.org. ARCHBISHOP VISIT! Archbishop Kay will be visiting St Paul's Parish on the 22nd December 2019. She will perform mass and join us in the hall for morning tea. VIOLIN RECITAL There will be a concert of student violinists, Sunday 10th November at 2pm in our hall. All are invited to this free event!
