NEW DIOCESAN STATUTES
At the last Synod, draft principles to amend the Professional
Standards, Clergy Discipline, and Clergy Appointments and Licensing
Statutes were considered. The Synod agreed with these principles
and endorsed the need to conduct appropriate consultation in the
process of drafting revised Legislation.
The Legislation Committee have been working hard to develop drafts
of this legislation and have programmed the first consultation
session for Laity:
9am to 12pm Saturday 5 September at Wollaston College.
This consultation session is only for Laity and is open to all Laity.
A further consultation session for Clergy and Laity has been
programmed for 3 October.
The three pieces of legislation will be available to view in the
Diocesan website "Document Library" from Wednesday 26 August.
If you would like to attend this session, please register via the
Diocesan website "Events" page by Wednesday 2 September.
3. Christianity, depending on who you ask, is either a scourge on our
society, narrow, delusive, and inevitably producing hatred and
violence; or the foundation of some of the best elements of our
culture and a continued source of hope, comfort to those in need,
and moral inspiration. Are we talking about the same people here?
Are we looking at the same history?
Crusades, witch hunts, slavery, colonialism, child abuse... the history
of the church offers plenty of ammunition to its critics. And on the
other hand: charity, human rights, abolition, non-violent resistance,
literacy and education.
In For the Love of God, Natasha Moore confronts the worst of what
Christians have done, and also traces the origins of some of the
things we like best about our culture back to the influence of Jesus.
Covering episodes from
the Spanish Inquisition to
Martin Luther King Jr, Florence
Nightingale to the "humility
revolution", this book offers an
accessible but wide-ranging
introduction to the good, the
bad, the ugly - and the
unexpected - when it comes to
the impact Christianity has had
on the world we live in.

SWEEP CLEAN THE ROOMS OF
OUR HEART
A YEAR WITH THOMAS MERTON
In recent times the pandemic has affected us all. Some people
expressed how it mentally affected them, others shared their joy for
the quiet life. Most of us would have experienced a mixture of
experiences. The writings and spirit of Thomas Merton can be a guide
to shine light on the multiple rooms and ways of our mind, heart and
soul. The aim of this reading group is to grow deeper into our
personal spirituality, into deepened inner freedom. The group is
suitable for everyone who has been put on a spiritual journey, and
wants to further explore the dialogue between our inner and outer
Source. Following Merton’s example, we will practice self-reflection
by ways of journal writing, and creative journaling.
When: Monthly on a Thursday, 9am-11am, starting 24th September,
then 22nd October, 5th November, 3rd December.
Where: St Paul's Chapel
Cost: $10 per session, all materials included
