Student Sustainability Advisor Position 9 May 2016
Being able to become a Student Sustainability Advisor would be a wonderful opportunity at
this point in my life, as I am already envisioning and working on goals for a sustainable future. Not
only would I benefit by learning from others on my team and experts in the field, but I would be able
to share my passion through UCSC’s commitment to educate our campus community in the
promotion of greener ways of living.
Last year I became vegetarian for two important reasons. The first was that I did not like eating
meat, like many other people, but the second reason was so that I could encourage others to eat less
meat, as it is better for the environment. I felt that the only way that I could influence others about
changing their eating habits, without getting backlash, would be if it came from someone who did not
eat any meat themselves. In addition to talking to my peers, I am also trying to spark conversations
about change through creative means. Currently I am working on an Art + Environment Mini Grant
project, “Living in Transition,” that I plan to continue throughout my college years and beyond. The
project follows my efforts as I downsize and change my lifestyle to be more eco-friendly. The end
product of this expedition is for me to come to understand all the ways I am affecting my
surroundings and how to better live within the environment. Furthermore, another end goal of this
project is to design, construct, and live in a tiny house that is both efficient and has a smaller footprint
on the earth.
In this past year, I have had many opportunities to enhance and demonstrate my leadership
and support skills. I had the chance to work as a student assistant with a professor from my
department to present a three day event which brought students together with educators and artists. I
coordinated all student volunteers, the set up and clean up for meals, and aided with any other tasks
as they came up. I am currently serving on a leadership team for a student-run organization, MESH,
where I participate in the planning, creative outreach and fostering of safe discussion environments. I
have held two work-study positions in different offices on campus. One of these jobs involves
photographing staff members and department events, which has required me to work around others’
schedules and manage my own time to complete the tasks required by my supervisor. Through all of
these experiences I have come to realize that I am able to work well independently and also as part of
a team.
I hope to be able to put my enthusiasm and work abilities to good use in support of successful
programming, which will model sustainability efforts and goals for residential living at UCSC.
