Two neural networks, LSTM and DNN, were used to extract phoneme posteriorgrams from speech. DNN was very slow and memory intensive, while LSTM performed well. Untangling the DNN recipe showed that components like lattice determinization and fMLLR, which help ASR, hurt performance for this task. Phoneme units were automatically selected based on their relevance to the query-document alignment path. Performance improved using a reduced set of the most suitable phoneme units.
