‘How much am I supposed to write?’ must be one of the most frequent questions students ask themselves when faced with descriptive essay type handwritten answers in English literature examination.
Tom Benton [Cambridge Assessment, Research Division]: “I remember this question being asked by someone in the class nearly every time… Despite the ubiquity of the question, clear answers are hard to come by.”
Previous research has shown that the length of responses does have some association with achievement and also provided some norms around the possible writing speed.
Tom Benton’s study shows that –
“Nearly all responses of fewer than 200 words resulted in a grade U, suggesting that whilst very long answers are not necessary for a good mark, candidates must write enough to make sure that the examiner can recognize their knowledge at all.”
With this in mind it would be a good advice for all candidates, even those who are not expecting to achieve the highest grades, to ensure that they write at least a significant number of pages in response to an English Literature exam question allowing 30 minutes to write descriptive answer.
But exactly how long shall a student write?

How many pages or lines shall be produced in writing descriptive answer?

Around the world, the English language is being used for communication among people who come from various language backgrounds—in fact, a majority of English users today grew up speaking other languages. As a result of these language contacts, the English language itself is changing its shape. While some people resist change, there is not much any individual—or a group of people—can do to reverse the trend. In fact, no one owns the language. Yet, people have various views about what English is or should be.
One way to understand different perspectives on an issue is to conduct a rhetorical analysis of texts--spoken or written.
Rhetorical analysis
is a way of analyzing what the text can tell us not only about the subject and argument strategies but also about the interrelationship among the writer, the audience, the genre and arguments as well as the cultural values of the writer and of the knowledge community.
For this writing project, write a rhetorical analysis essay (a kind of critical analysis essay) that examines an argument about English as a global language. Start by identifying a text that presents an argument about global English. The text can be of any genre—including newspaper editorial, opinion sections of newspapers or magazines, blogs, websites, advertisements, signs, posters, and so on. (Keep in mind that analyzing short texts could require more effort in interpreting and explaining the text and its context.)
Once you have identified the text for analysis, explore the text and its context by considering the following questions: What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text? What kind of situation is the text responding to? Who is the writer? How does the writer establish his or her credibility? What is the writer’s attitude toward the subject? How do you know? Who is the primary audience? Who is the secondary audience? What is the major argument and how is it being built? What are some of the supporting arguments? What other arguments or perspectives are represented? What is the genre and what are some of the characteristic features that are expected? What are the characteristics that are actually found in the text? Is the text effective in communicating the main point to the audience? What can you say about the values and assumptions that are shared by members of the knowledge community?
In addition to analyzing the text itself, you may also find it useful to find out about the medium in which the text was presented. Explore these and other related questions thoroughly to generate ideas for your writing.

The Rhetorical Analysis of a Text should be focused on one academic journal
article or an article in an anthology (a book with a collection of related essays).
You will need to add a couple of additional sources to show you’ve thoroughly
researched your topic. For the more detailed analysis, you should choose an article
you are considering for use in your Position Essay (a persuasive paper you’ll write
later in the semester). The goal of this paper is to assure you can carefully evaluate a
source and to illustrate your ability to do academic research.
Here is a sample outline of the essay, which I suggest using:

c. Make a claim about the effectiveness of the text (as your thesis)

COMS 360 Litke – Topic Exploration Assignment 1
Topic Exploration Assignment 1 requires you to select a topic related to EITHER chapter 3 (women’s
rhetorical movements) OR chapter 4 (men’s rhetorical movements) and to explore that topic in greater
detail. You will begin your exploration by reviewing the related material in chapter 3 or chapter 4 and
then will conduct additional exploration of your topic. You will need to narrow your topic to meet the
requirements of the assignment. Keep in mind that papers must be specifically focused on gender.
This assignment serves to strengthen skills in information competence relative to research and support of
ideas. Consequently, you are required to conduct additional research on your topic. Topic Exploration 1
must include a minimum of three current, scholarly academic sources. For Topic Exploration 1, the
textbook can be included as one of the three minimum required sources but should not be the only source
or the primary source of supporting material for your exploration of your selected topic. For most
papers/topics, “current” would typically mean roughly the last ten years, however, some topics might
warrant older sources. The assignment requires that you locate scholarly or academic sources which will
be the general expectation. However, some topics might be so current that the only available sources
might not be found in scholarly/journal type sources. So, the requirement for current, scholarly, academic
sources could vary given topics selected. All papers require credible sources. Make sure that you have a
minimum of three references; that is a requirement of the assignment.
Requirements and Evaluation:

font, Times New Roman paper, standard 1” margins on all sides (unjustified). Sources must be cited in
text and in a reference list in APA format (see the next page for some guidelines on APA format). Provide
ONLY your name in the upper right corner of your paper. Skip a line, and begin your essay. Do not
include a title, headings, running head, or any other identifying information. This will allow you
maximum space to convey your material. Do not plagiarize ANY PART of your paper.
All papers must be well written, clearly supported, and thoroughly proofread. Papers will be evaluated on
content, quality and depth of research, clarity, organization, citation, style, and format. If you have

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
