from organization development practitioners. OD Practitioner, 46(3), 68-75.
Unit Lesson
This unit begins with a brief history of team building. The first efforts to improve organizations came from T-
groups (training groups) and from the National Training Laboratories in Silver Spring, Maryland. Participants
in T-groups learned to communicate in a more open and honest manner, accept responsibility for their
behavior, and engage in relationships based on equality rather than on hierarchy or status. In 1968, Campbell
and Dunnette conducted a study of the impact of T-groups on organizational performance. They concluded
that while T-groups did help individuals become more comfortable with their ability to manage interpersonal
relationships, T-groups had virtually no impact on organization or team performance. The team-building
paradigm was created to shift from an unstructured T-group to a more focused and defined process for
training a group in collaborative work and problem solving.

in relation to the first C include the following.
How important is effective teamwork to accomplishing this particular task?
What type of team (e.g., task team, decision team, self-directed team) do I need?
Do my organization's culture, structure, and processes support teamwork?
The second C is composition, or the skills, attitudes, and experience of the team members. According to

Narrated Business Proposal for the Philadelphia Eaglescamrynascott12
Slide 1:
Welcome, and thank you for joining me today. We will explore a strategic proposal to enhance parking and traffic management at Lincoln Financial Field, aiming to improve the overall fan experience and operational efficiency. This comprehensive plan addresses existing challenges and leverages innovative solutions to create a smoother and more enjoyable experience for our fans.
Slide 2:
Picture this: It’s a crisp fall afternoon, driving towards Lincoln Financial Field. The atmosphere is electric—tailgaters grilling, fans in Eagles jerseys creating a sea of green and white. The air buzzes with camaraderie and anticipation. You park, join the throng, and make your way to your seat. The stadium roars as the Eagles take the field, sending chills down your spine. Each play is a thrilling dance of strategy and skill. This is what being an Eagles fan is all about—the joy, the pride, and the shared experience.
Slide 3:
But now, the day is marred by frustration. The excitement wanes as you struggle to find a parking spot. The congestion is overwhelming, and tempers flare. The delays mean you miss the pre-game excitement, the tailgate camaraderie, and even the opening kick-off. After the game, the joy of victory or the shared solace of defeat is overshadowed by the stress of navigating out of the parking lot. The gridlock, honking horns, and endless waiting drain the energy and joy from what should have been an unforgettable experience.
Our proposal aims to eliminate these frustrations, ensuring that from arrival to departure, your experience is extraordinary. Efficient parking and smooth traffic flow are key to maintaining the high spirits and excitement that make game days special.
Slide 4:
The Philadelphia Eagles are not just a premier NFL team; they are an integral part of the community, hosting games, concerts, and various events at Lincoln Financial Field. Our state-of-the-art stadium is designed to provide a world-class experience for every attendee. Whether it's the thrill of game day, the excitement of a live concert, or the camaraderie of community events, we pride ourselves on delivering a fan-first experience and maintaining operational excellence across all our activities. Our commitment to our fans and community is unwavering, and we continuously strive to enhance every aspect of their experience, ensuring they leave with unforgettable memories.
Slide 5:
Recent trends show an increasing demand for efficient event logistics. Our customer feedback has consistently highlighted frustrations with parking and traffic. Surveys indicate that a significant number of fans are dissatisfied with the current parking situation. Comparisons with other venues like Citizens Bank Park and Wells Fargo Center reveal that we lag in terms of parking efficiency and convenience. These insights underscore the urgent need for innovation to meet and exceed fan expectations.

Wann, 1997).
3
RP@UiTM SHAH ALAM
4. Characteristic of Group

4. Members of the group perceive themselves
as a group and should be able to recognize
their members.
4
RP@UiTM SHAH ALAM
5. Types of Groups
1. Formal Groups : intentionally created, directs its member towards
achievement of specific objectives.
I. Command group
- made up of people can legally give instructions for other people to
follow
- Specified by the organization chart, comprises the subordinates
who report directly to a given supervisor (e.g. coach, manager,
captain of football club can give orders to players, sports
organization structure).
I. Task group
- formed to complete a specific task or project.
- Members are expertise regarding task to be completed and
without taking into account members’ position in the hierarchy of

Football Development Program – Phase 1, BAM).
2. Informal Groups : developed naturally among employees without
any influence from sports organization within which they operate.
I. Interest group – members share a common interest, and work
together to achieve it. (e.g. salaries or welfare issues)

interpersonal attraction, and consider
themselves to be a group.
(Carron, 1994)
7
A sports team is also a group, but it will be a
mistake to see any group of individuals as a
team, as there are some differences between
groups and teams.
RP@UiTM SHAH ALAM
8. Stages in
Development of Teams
1. Stage 1 : Forming – members get to know
each other and try to establish rules for the
group. In this stage they experience inner
doubt about their ability and skill and level
of experience with the team-mate. (e.g.
compare skills and experience – will be in
the starting line up, or only sit on substitutes’
bench)
2. Stage 2 : Storming – known as the infighting
or internal conflict stage. There is a high
degree of conflict within the group, with the
members showing hostility toward each
other. (e.g. compete for position, fight for
attention of the coach)
8
RP@UiTM SHAH ALAM
9. (cont.) Stages in
Development of Teams
3. Stage 3 : Norming – beginning of the development
of team cohesion. The group become united and

getting the job done. Every members feel secure
and play own roles (e.g. each being happy to see
group members excellent and do well).
5. Stage 5 : Adjourning – group may break up after
achieve objectives. The group may break up to
pursue other opportunity (such join other club), or
sometimes may be due to conflict with the coach.
(e.g. coach/ player being fired perceived to be
caused bad influence to the team cohesiveness)
9
RP@UiTM SHAH ALAM
10. Groups VS Teams
Groups Teams
Performance depends on
each individuals contribution.
Performance depends on
both each individuals in teams
and joint contribution of
members.
Responsible only for their
individuals performance and
individual contribution to
group performance.

contribution and overalls
team’s performance.
Follow instructions that are
regularly given by
management.

personnel, but the team
allowed independence and
flexibility to do the job without
further interference from
management.
10
RP@UiTM SHAH ALAM
11. Team Cohesiveness
Definition – extent to which members of a
team are willing to be part of the team,
are attracted to each other, accept team
objectives and help in working to achieve
the objectives.
e.g. If the players decide to act against their
coach/manager, they may all play poorly
and ultimately cost the coach/manager
his/her job.
11
RP@UiTM SHAH ALAM

• Isolates – not linked to social network; operate
alone.
• Stars – most connections/linkages in a network
and usually the most popular with members of
the group.
